Wii Speak being phased out

Console's microphone peripheral now available only at "limited retail locations"; Nintendo says it could be brought back "if consumer demand increases."

In late 2008, Nintendo released Wii Speak, a microphone accessory for its Wii console. The peripheral allows for speaker-phone-style voice chat with an entire room, versus the headset-based chat used by other consoles. The device also has its own dedicated channel on the console, letting users chat with one another via their Mii avatars.

Wii Speak manufacturing may soon be silenced.

However, it appears that the Wii Speak's days are now numbered. Nintendo has confirmed that the peripheral is being phased out and is now available only "at limited retail locations." The company did leave the door open for the add-on, saying "additional shipments can be made if consumer demand increases."

In the meantime, the company suggested consumers also use Performance Designed Products' Headbanger Headset to use voice chat on the Wii. The company said that peripheral will continue to be available for the Wii and will work with such games as Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops and Sega's Conduit 2.

As for the Wii Speak Channel, Nintendo was tight-lipped. "We have nothing to announce regarding the future of this channel, and it currently is being enjoyed by many gamers," a spokesperson said.

Yeah, never really saw the need for this anyway. There are only two things Nintendo doesn't lead in in my book: 1.Graphics.They always do just enough to get the job done, which is fine by me. 2. Internet gameplay. The friendcode thing gets in the way, though I do believe a more controlled service is needed than XBL and PSNetwork. Some of the things that get said and written on there.....0.o Definitely needs a parental code or some such system to protect the youngins.

IrshDrkWlf Yeh man I just got Zelda Twilight Princess today, but I couldnt find umbrella chronicles, They remind me of that RE eail shooter on the PS2, I forget what its called but I dont care for 4 and 5 at all, just dont feel like RE. I was looking at this Capcom vs ????? (can't remember but I think someone on here suggested it) maybe I should scope it out.

@bleedgreen2-1-5 Yeah a lot of the 3rd party family/party titles aren't as good as they should be and there are some that are very good. If these family/party titles are Nintendo made then usually no matter how goofy they are usually very good. The RE titles Umbrella and Darkside aren't like old school RE they are like the railgun shooters from the arcades that we used to play. As far as some great 3rd party titles go try out Ubisoft's No More Heroes 1 & 2.

As for the SD vs HD talk, I disagree with the "Once you go HD, you can't go back to SD". I played in HD and I can easily go back to SD, mostly because I care about the actually gameplay of games, not the graphics. Graphics are nice, but it's all about the gameplay or else a game isn't that good.

With the need of a friend code for this; and a friend code for that it's no surprise that this peripheral it's on it's way out. Oh well, bring on your next innovation Nintendo.

@IrshDrkWlf Yeh there are still some games I would get like Mario Kart, Zelda and Donkey Kong. I'm not a big Smash Bros fan and the Kirby epic yarn game looks whack. I was planning on getting RE Umbrella Chronicles and it's sequel (I think its Darkside Chronicles?) But as for RE 4, I wasnt a fan, I didnt care for RE 5 either, just didnt have the RE feel to them. I wont deny there may be good 3rd party games out there, but as i look through the list of games available its very laughable, All very childish or just plain stupid. And I know this system is more family orientated but wow is its library of games horrible.

Wii speak should have been built into the sensor bar since launch. Than a lot more games would have supported it and it wouldn't be phased out. I really didn't feel like stating the obvious, but it would seem that Nintendo is not always aware of the obvious logical solution to anything.

Why would i depamnd such a terrible accessory. My friends and I all purchased wii speak day monster hunter tri came out. Let me tell you Wii speak has to be the worse mic i have ever used. There was so much static and it was hard to hear what anyone was saying. I`ll demand a new microphone please that works like its suppose to. Other wise ill just use skype since its a better work around.

"Nope, no good Wii releases this year... no siree..." So because I took one of your statements out of context, I should be able to get 13 of my friends(or make 13 different accounts) and "thumbs up" my comment. I am interested in Sin and Punishment 2 as well as Metroid:The other M, and Monster Hunter Tri was a pretty awesome game but really... there hasn't been much else worth mentioning (And no... No more Heroes really... really isn't worth mentioning)

When did they ever frickin use it?!!?!? It was used in Conduit and Animal Crossing as well as a few other titles. Why can't the Wii have a normal speaking mic for online play? So annoying. I really don't understand why no one ever uses it.

DrJonAngus
DrJonAngus

Pretty much everybody saw this coming, especially considering the quality was pretty poor and Wii Speak had virtually no use. You couldn't really engage in a party of people to talk to, unless you and your friends considered using Animal Crossing City Folk or whatever small list of games that implemented it. It's a shame though because voice chat on the Wii could have been pretty cool if it was done right. As for this whole SD/HD debate, it's the game itself, not necessarily the graphics, though many people all ready know/disagree with that. I keep going back to NES, SNES, Genesis, TG-16, N64, and many other games because they are awesome, not because they have the best graphics ever. I honestly don't mind SD because the games don't exactly look horrendous or anything. Yeah, the Wii does not have the biggest library of games that satisfy all huge Nintendo fans, but the games out there that we like are awesome and well worth the money.

I just hope they don't stop using the Wii Balance Board. I really like it and I want more support for it!

they should've put the microphone in the wiimote... same as motion plus... and not sell it like an add-on later... i realized this playing Silent Hill: SM. when you get the phone calls... i think it would be neat. Cheers!

Bangerman15

the wii speak was doomed to fail from the start, when it first came out the only game it worked for was animal crossing..and nobody wants to use something liek this to play fps games or anything else online.. PEOPLE USE HEADSETS TO CHAT!!! nintendo keeps trying to be different with their online having friend codes and crap when it would be pretty awesome if they had a free online service. and im pretty sure we can all agree on that

Xizle
Xizle

Improve the online service and intorduce headsets. People have been asking for this ever since the wii was released. This was barely even an attempt to give the people what they want. Ofcourse it failed.

campbell153

Make Wii more sociable and give the Wii players what they want... a headset and the opportunity to speak with fellow gamers online!

Its annoying keeping track of the cord for the Wii speak. It often gets tangled in the cord for the sensor bar.

it is a good idea, but with almost no 3rd party support, and nintendo doesnt use it...another failed peripheral for nintendo.

I had not even heard of Wii Speak before. Guess it was never that popular to begin with. If it didn't work that great, they should have phased it out long ago. They should just come out with a mic like their competition.

MrHatnClogs
MrHatnClogs

As a Wii owner, I really don't care about mics, it's fun enough goofing around on Brawl without them, however I wish Nintendo would focus on improving the online service, like getting rid of the friend codes for example.

"Goldeneye doesn't count for a good Wii game." Of course it doesn't. And neither does Super Mario Galaxy 2, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Metroid: Other M, Red Steel 2, Sin and Punishment 2, etc. Nope, no good Wii releases this year... no siree...

mightEone
mightEone

Not suprised, the Wii in general is just cheap gimmicks. The 360 and PS3 are superior in every way. The Wii gets maybe 1 good game a year while the "real" consoles get awesome, new games on a monthly basis. Goldeneye doesn't count for a good Wii game. I played that game over a decade a go on the N64.

dzimm

Maybe if more games had used it then it would have been successful. I got mine free with Endless Ocean 2 and never even took it out of the wrapper.

ZabuzaR

Maybe it would have sold better if they had a headset. I don't want to play online and communicate with others when the damn thing picks up all the voices in the room.

maybe if it was utilized in games it wouldnt go end of life , wondering if motion plus will share the same fate....
