Wii Mini coming to UK

After launching in Canada last year, scaled-down console to launch in United Kingdom March 22; no word on North American debut.

by

The Wii Mini will launch across the United Kingdom March 22, Nintendo announced today. The $99 console was announced in late November as exclusive to Canada. The scaled-down system has not been confirmed for North America.

The Wii Mini is smaller than the original Wii and features red coloring and a square-shaped form factor. Included with the console are a red Wii Remote Plus and a matching red Nunchuk controller.

The system is compatible with most Wii accessories, but notably cannot connect to the Internet, meaning it does not support online play whatsoever. In addition, the Wii Mini is not compatible with GameCube discs or accessories.

To coincide with the Wii Mini launch in the UK, Nintendo will release four new Nintendo Selects titles in the region. These are Mario Party 8, Wii Sports Resort, Mario Power Tennis, and Super Paper Mario.

As of December 31, Nintendo has sold 99.38 million Wii units across the world to date along with 863.53 million games. The console's successor--the Wii U--has shifted 3.06 million units since launch and has tallied 11.69 million software sales.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Canada part of North America?  Last I checked, North America was a continent, not a country by itself.

You might as well get gamecube under 30-50 bucks

Ok, lets deploy team logic to fight this battle, as a side note I'm going to mention price as a pro since for a new console the price is pretty good:

Con: no internet capability, loss of gamecube games, the Wii is quite old now & the Wii U is released which can play Wii games.

Pros: Nintendo focuses more on local multiplayer over online, the Wii (according to the extremely reliable and unquestionable (/sarcasm) Wikipedia) had 1220 games within its library as of November 2011 and that number is probably a bit higher now, small size improves portability & apparently it can be hooked up into cars according to an earlier comment by @3G-ENIE . This might not be a very relevant Pro for the mini but I thought it was interesting! I wish I could have been playing Smash Bros when I was a kid on long car rides...

Anyway for under $100 (£66 if Google conversion rates are accurate) your gaining access to an extensive 7 year library of games, most of which are going to be really cheap since they would have been released years ago, on a shiny new console. Sure there is no online multi-player but that was never Nintendo's thing with the Wii, even with the Wii U they declared they preferred promoting local multi-player over online. All in all its a pretty good budget console for those who can't afford the extensive price tags on upcoming generation. I'm sure some rich hardcore gamers might be insulted by the idea of a budget gaming console being released but just because you either have gone through everything the Wii had to offer you or you just don't like Nintendo for whatever reasons you can't hate this idea since it isn't targeted for you. Just because you like gaming doesn't mean you can afford the best.

So there we go, I logical, if slightly biased viewpoint on the Wii mini.

I honestly can't think of any reason why gamers would buy this stripped down version of the Wii. This would be good for kids though.

I thought the Wii was pretty much obsolete by now. As far as I know it's pretty much collecting dust everywhere there is one. I will say I do really want to play Xenoblade, but I have too many other games to play.

so now that's its not just canadian it will loose its collectors value and would render the purchase useless

This console is extremely small & low power consumption. I hooked it up in my car and my kids play SSMB in the back seats. It's perfect!

I have one, great little thing if you don't mind the virtual console. I knew I was going to buy a Wii U eventually, but couldn't miss on some gems on the Wii anymore... PUNCH OUT BABY!!!!

I can actually see myself getting this, it's cheap and it'll just be for hanging out with friends. If you look at it like that it really makes sense.

" Nintendo has sold 99.38 million Wii units across the world to date along with 863.53 million games"--Is that accounting for first-party, new games only?

I'd probably rather choose a Wii U instead so I can play Watch Dogs too. Nice idea for a kids/teenagers first games console though.

Shame the Wii Mini drops Gamecube support. Given how cheap Wii consoles cost now, this really shouldn't sell well at all.

So let's say you hate the Wii U but you love Nintendo.

You love the Wii but you hate the Gamecube.

You love gaming but you hate the internet.

If you're one of those 6 people, you should still probably just buy a used Wii and save yourself some money.

Wii mini looks bigger than the original.

It is a nice looking little machine for sure, but considering just how much of a dumbed down Wii this is, I couldn't recommend it even for the most casual of players.

This is a rather fine review written by Eurogamer: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/df-hardware-nintendo-wii-mini-review

The veredict is that this is such a step back for the Wii that it becomes impractical to recommend. Do you want a Wii? THere must be tons of bundles or discounts you could go after, just avoid this one.

Scaled down?  The thing barely plays games.  I'll keep my launch console(Revolution).  It still works fine.

Another exclusive that was total BS.

Why are people making a big deal over nothing about the Wii U's launch?  It sold 3 million worldwide as of now so I don't see that as something bad.  It's 100 times better than the PS3's launch.

Wii is going to sell its 100 millionth console. Kudos to the big N.

I sorta want the Wii mini since it's so cheap.

@Toplinkar @soulless4now If I wanted the regular Wii, I would've gotten it long ago. I'd rather have the cheapest model for the few rpgs that I want to play that's on the system. That's the only reason I'm interested. I don't care about the first party titles. Outside of Kirby and the occasional Mario game, they just don't captivate me.
