Why you should buy a PS4 in 2014

PS I love you

by

Join us over the next few days as we look at all of the leading games consoles and platforms out right now and try to convince you why you should spend your hard-earned cash. Today we're looking at the PS4, with Mark Walton telling you why it's the next-gen console of choice.

You've got three options when it comes to buying a next-generation (current generation?) console, but the PlayStation 4 is great one. It's sleek, powerful, and--most importantly--all about the games. It's even got an online service offers more than just access to online multiplayer, with Instant Game Collection giving you access to a host of great games as part of PlayStation Plus. And with sales already reaching 4.2 million units worldwide, you'll find plenty of friends to play online with too.

The Library

Having only been around a few months, the PS4's line-up of games might be a little sparse, but there's still plenty to keep you entertained. On the exclusive side there's Killzone: Shadow Fall, which--for all its faults--is an impressive showcase of the PS4's power, and offers up some mighty fine multiplayer gaming to boot. Then there's Knack... actually, the less said about that little doozie the better.

The brilliant Resogun is free to PS Plus subscribers.

More fun are the PS4's many indie titles, the best of which is Resogun, an old-school shoot-em-up dressed up in some very pretty voxels. It's got that "just one more go" arcade vibe about it that makes the hours fly by, and I've lost count of the time I've ploughed into it trying to land a perfect run and top the high scores on my friends list. Also worth checking out are the excellent Flower and Sound Shapes. They might be available on PS3 and Vita as well, but they're still wonderfully unique games that you can't get outside of a Sony platform.

There's all the usual cross-platform stuff to dig into too, with the likes of Assassin's Creed IV, FIFA 14, and Call Of Duty: Ghosts featuring noticeable graphical improvements over their last-generation versions. And let's not forget that the PS4 has been topping the Xbox One's visuals, most famously of all with COD: Ghosts, a game that runs natively at 1080p on Sony's machine and at an upscaled 720p on Microsoft's.

Upcoming Games

Let's face it though, if you fancied any of the launch games you'd have jumped on the next-gen bandwagon already. It's what's coming up that makes the PS4 a worthy buy, and there are some great-looking exclusives on the way. Sucker Punch's inFamous: Second Son is looking particularly tasty, with the series' trademark super powers and open-world action getting a crisp visual overhaul and some neat new power sets. Then there's the likes of Driveclub, Shadow Of The Beast, and The Order: 1886 on the way, not to mention whatever Naughty Dog has in store for Uncharted 4.

inFamous: Second Son leads a great lineup of upcoming games on PS4.

Sony's active courting of indie developers has landed it some great-looking timed exclusives too, with the stunning-looking adventure Rime and the wonderfully cheesy Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number both making their console debut on PS4. I'm particularly excited for The Witness, a Myst-like take on the puzzle game created by Jonathan Blow, the man behind the brilliant Braid.

We don't yet know for certain if cross-platform games like Watch Dogs, Tom Clancy's The Division, Mad Max, and Destiny are going to look their best on PS4, although the furore over the likes of COD: Ghosts and Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition certainly suggest that's going to be the case. Plus, there's a six-month timed exclusive on Watch Dogs DLC to look forward to too.

The Hardware

The PS4 has a sleek monolithic vibe about it that just screams cool. It's small and quiet, even with its handy integrated power supply, and its unassuming exterior makes it look right at home in an AV rack. As far as cost goes, it might not be as cheap as a Wii U, but the PS4 is certainly cheaper than an Xbox One, even when you factor a game into the cost.

The PS4 is a great-looking console and the controller is vast improvement over the Dual Shock 3.

Even if you weren't a fan of Sony's Dual Shock 3 controller, it's worth checking out the Dual Shock 4: it's a wonderful thing. The improvements to its grips, analogue sticks, and size make it a far better to use than its predecessor, and there's the potential to do great things with the DS4's touch pad too, even if they haven't quite materialised in the current crop of games.

If you're holding out for a price drop or a hardware revision, don't expect to see either in 2014. With its already small size, it'll be a while before the chips can be scaled down enough to make a smaller box, and with sales going so well at the moment, a price drop is unlikely. Basically, if you jump on board now, an immanent price drop won't be burning you in the near future.

Other Stuff

Want to access services like Netflix or BBC iPlayer? PS4 gives you access to their respective apps for free without having to subscribe to PlayStation Plus on top your existing media subscriptions. You still need to pay for PS Plus to play online, but it's great value thanks to free games that Sony puts up every month as part of Instant Game Collection. The likes of Resogun, Contrast, and Outlast (in the UK) are already part of the deal on PS4, and if you own a PS3 or Vita, you can use the same subscription there to net you even more games. They're big games too, with the likes of Bioshock Infinite and Borderlands 2 up for grabs.

Vita owners can also make use of Remote Play, which lets you play PS4 games on your Vita provided both devices are on the same network. Unlike with the PS3, Remote Play is being built into almost every game on the PS4 (the exception being those that use the PS4 camera), so you can continue playing, even if the living room TV is suddenly needed for a Breaking Bad marathon.

The PS4's UI is swift, clear, and a joy to use.

When it comes to day to day use, the PS4 is a great experience. The user interface is swift and clear, with everything just where you'd expect it to be. Then there's the excellent home screen that instantly gives you updates on what your friends are up to, letting you jump onto their online sessions, or see their latest high scores at a glance. Plus, you can stream straight to Twitch and UStream on PS4 with just the push of a button.

The PS4 is well-built machine, with a thoughtful UI and a lineup of great games. But it's what's coming up that makes it so enticing, with everything from exciting big budget blockbusters to unique indie experiences hitting the console soon. If you've been sitting on the fence waiting for something more than the launch lineup, 2014 is the time to make the jump to PS4.

DO NOT BUY PS4 this year. THERE ARE NO GAMES TO PLAY!!!!! Wait till end of this year.

I'd rather recommend buying PS3 for 'The Last of Us' & 'Beyond:Two Souls', games you MUST play before you die.

And you can still play AC4:Blackflag & Tomb raider on PS3.

As much as I think the PS4 is a solid value, product-wise, this article was rather weak.  It doesn't really say anything much beyond what we already know about the PS4 and, frankly, it says nothing about the real reasons one would buy a PS4--newly-announced upcoming games.  In terms of games, I personally have yet a real reason to buy one as of yet.  Until I see more compelling games to buy one currently, I'll wait for more solid titles to later arrive before consider buying one.  Might even have a new modified smaller PS4 model or perhaps a new console color by that time, if the past of Sony's trends with console models is any indication.  I really do hate dust-gathering-in-the-crevices-on-a-sleek-black-exterior with consoles.

GameSpot, you wanna make a "Why you should buy a PC in 2014" article? I mean the new consoles are in fact both x86 PCs that just contain proprietary hardware and software. And of course an actual gaming PC can easily be built for 600 or 700 dollars. So why not?

darkrayne

Still waiting for that exclusive (non-pc basically) that I MUST have before getting a new console. If it's on PC, that's where I'll play it.. regardless of what I own.

Destiny could be the push. Then again, I never really liked the Halo games.. so I'll wait and see.

Kre8or

I used to have a gaming PC, Xbox, and Playstation, I used to be that person. Then I got rid of my playstation because most of the games I wanted and played were on PC and Xbox (and Xbox was running better than PS at that point). At that time Xbox had a more effective multiplayer platform than Playstation, and PC had better MMOs than either. I played MMOs on the PC and Xbox 360 for years with very little problems and lots of fun.

Then kinect came out and I figured why not, it looks fun and new agey. Waste of money to say the least. As Xbox games grew more advanced, they seemed to glitch out more, and Xbox increasingly became more troublesome, like I was spending money on things I wasn't able to use as effectively as they proclaimed. Things I never really worried about with my PC.

Now with the last E3, Xbox obviously tried to force a standard on gamers that made it seem like they would have no choice on matters they had the freedom of before, and loved very obviously. And POW! Sony comes in with everything they know gamers love, Xbox changes it's mind and contradicts most of their decisions before release of the Xbox 1. Again not something you run into with a PC because it's formed specifically for the individual if you know what you want.

**If you follow politics at all you'll see this same kind of stuff. They'll force standards (obamacare), Lie to convince you to back something (9/11 or any recent war we've been involved in), try to back out after it's to late because people are now angry that it's happening. Then people will settle for what they're being sold because of propaganda, brainwashing (TV ads), and ignorance (people don't want to do the research that informs because it's boring and tedious).

Which leads to my conclusion: IMO - PC, because even if you get a gaming PC it can do far more than just gaming.

1) You won't have to worry about whether your kinect or your PS eye is worth it.

2) Your PC camera can be used more frequently and effectively for various things.

3) All the programs like skype, netflix etc on your PC don't cost a membership on top of a membership on top of a membership to use.

4) Your PC can easily out perform the console, and most games on console are coming to PC in the future (I know there are a few exclusives to console but that will probably change)

5) Controller or keyboard the PC uses both.

6) Your PC may cost more, but it will also last longer and do more. So if you think about it, if you bought the Xbox for $400, then xbox 360 for $400 a few years later, that would be like getting a gaming PC that would have been as good as both. Or Xbox 360 for $400 then an Xbox 1 a few years later for $500.

7) Plus your PC can help you with Homework, Research, Education etc. to help you gain the intelligence needed to fight the corruption, ask the necessary questions, and make informed decisions. Xbox 1 or PS4 can't do that

8) Now a days you can hook up your PC to your TV and do exactly the same stuff as the consoles without all the extra subscriptions

Titanfall:  one reason to buy a PC this year.  Just joking how I own a PS4 and can still play the xbone's "exclusives".

Joking aside.  The lineup for 2014 isn't exactly dazzling for either console.   The biggest release this month is friggen Tomb Raider for $60--a game I bought for PC in July for $10.  Both consoles game lineup is pathetic.

a bit silly how people try to 'sell' they own preferred platform and to convert others on every site. Ill be getting a PS4 this year when the top games (exclusive and multiplaform) release. There's just nothing I like in the Xbox and no game I'm interested in either. Others have a different opinion but hey...good for them .

I really don't see how the PS4 is the best console. Clearly, and as usual, the PC reigns supreme, but what is the ps4 giving me that I can't get on an Xbox One? If it's games, and that's your core argument, then the Wii U wins hands down.. if it's graphics then you're an idiot, because you can make a system for $500 that will have better graphics than either console.

all I have to say is an American will never be ceo of sony, nor does this company help Americas economy at all. I know gamers don't care but if you live here in the states and hope to get a high-tech job in the future you might want to start routing for the home team. not to mention Microsoft doing well means our economy does slightly better.

This Gen i'm going for a PS4/PC combo.

PC outperforms consoles so it is my go-to. Plus most microsoft exclusives will come to PC (Besides Quantum Break :[ )

The PS4 is needed for console-only games (e.g. MGS V, Destiny, KH3, FF15)
Plus Sony exclusives are always awesome and numerous. (Just look at the PS3)

Anyone care to elaborate why I should buy an Xbox One?

My Xbox 360 has gathered dust, the last exclusives were Halo and Gears of War long ago.
Whereas my PS3 has Resistance 3, Puppeteer, Ni No kuni, TLOU, God of War

Notice that the Xbox article was about talking about the system on its' own merits while the PS4 article is about talking about it in comparison to the competition. That's the "fanboy war" it a nutshell. One system sells itself while the other system sells by saying "hey we're not the other guy."

Tell me why I should buy your product, not why I shouldn't buy the other guy's. So far Sony hasn't done that, and this article certainly hasn't changed that tone.

@crymore_noob  Unless AC4 and Tomb Raider are games that you actually want to play on next gen consoles along with Call of Duty: Ghosts, NBA 2K14, Battlefield 4, Thief, Need For Speed, Rayman Legends, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Murdered: Soul Suspect, Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes or a number of other titles that will be out the first half of this year. Just sayin'...

@Kre8or Who wants their PC next to their TV?  Wireless remote solutions cost more than just buying a console.  Though, PC gaming lacks in one key area: Exclusives.  Exclusives that aren't just a bunch of indie games on Steam.  MGS5.  the upcoming The Legend of Zelda, Super Smash Bros. 4, Kingdom Hearts 3, Final Fantasy XV.  Guilty Gears Xrd -Sign-, and other such games that won't be found on PC are calling my name louder than anything on PC.  Until major developers give a hoot again for giving the PC some love, consoles have the advantage in exclusive AAA games that aren't yet-another fantasy MMORPG.

Wii U basically has Nintendo games only... a PC is not a console... and the PS4 online subscription gives a lot more value for your money compared to Gold.  Also many features like Netflix are not behind an additional paywall like they are on Xbox...

Why do people defend a company when both consoles don't have an excellent game to speak of? Who made the rule that you must sell your soul to only one game company and hate the other? I got the ps4 based on the fact that it's more powerful and i like the look of the upcoming exclusives more, and its cheaper. Not because it says Sony on the front. Are you fan boys just trolling? See... I don't even know. You should like a console because of its capabilities, not because of who makes it.

"Consoles are already WAY behind PC's, and they have just been released LOL."

Videogames are not about the specs of your system. So "Consoles being WAY behind PC's" is an inconsequential statement.

Graphics are impressive, and you get the classic control of the sticks with PS4. (A few more frames per second, a few more pixels per square inch < the classic PlayStation gaming experience)

Graphics are also impressive and you get a hi-tech interface with a ton of cool features and brand new ways to interact with your console as well as play your games with the Xbox One.

Graphics are right where Nintendo wants them to be, perfect for their charming and still elegant worlds And you get a brand new immersive way to play your games with the Wii U.

Also each system/company has their own games that have defined and solidified their foothold in the video game market.

@MacroManJr My small form factor is right under my TV. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse right on the table in front of the couch.  I also can use unified remote android app to control my PC easily with my phone. With Steam big picture mode, I have a console interface for gaming, and I also can use the Pinnacle Gaming app profiles to utilize my wireless 360 gamepad as a keyboard and mouse type controller for my PC.

Point being, that with the PC there are a kazillion easy to set up options.  You're not just stuck with the options static to a console from the manufacturer.  Consoles each new generation may bring one or two new things to use, but please be assured that the PC has been doing those "new options" for years and much much more

brockelley
brockelley

@Ufomammut @xbox1day1  We, as American's, are fully capable of making things just as good as anywhere else in the world, so you're right we should get whatever's the best...but that is NOT always the case...and your tone, while on par with post industrial virtues, strikes seemingly close to secular bear marketing, which is not indicative of inter-country economic growth in the slightest. We do still have to live here after all.
