Why So Serious? campaign exec joins Xbox TV unit

42 Entertainment cofounder Elan Lee joins Microsoft as chief design officer at Xbox Entertainment Studios.

Elan Lee, whose 42 Entertainment created the Why So Serious? viral marketing campaign for the Batman movie The Dark Knight, has joined Microsoft's Xbox TV business unit.

Deadline reports that Lee has been tapped to become chief design officer at Xbox Entertainment Studios, the Los Angeles outfit that launched last year. Lee will report to Nancy Tellem, the former CBS executive in charge of the Xbox TV brand.

Lee confirmed the news on Twitter, saying, "I guess I should make this official," followed by a link to the Deadline report.

Lee began his career at Microsoft Game Studios as a lead designer for the original Xbox. He left to establish 42 Entertainment, which in addition to the Why So Serious? campaign created augmented-reality projects like I Love Bees for Halo 2 and Year Zero for Nine Inch Nails.

Xbox Entertainment Studios will create original TV content, including the new Steven Spielberg-produced Halo show. It is unclear what other projects the unit has in development.

I was really looking forward to a new experience in my game play ... but now I have gone from 10 to zero on that level. Hell, we got a slap on the wrist for forcing them on certain issues ... with the "now you won't be allowed to share the games with your family members" ..... which turned out to be a very limited DEMO opportunity to remind you to get your own game. Good marketing ploys, MS! So, yes the new designers really have a challenge on their hands to make this TV gadget a selling point to me personally. Only time will tell, but in the end there will have to be extremely good games existing and I mean single player games, not only multiplayer.

Consoles, by their very nature, are DRMed;

proprietary software

that'll only run on proprietary hardware

that'll be discontinued

usually with NO backward compatibility.

Microsoft's big issue is the use of ONLINE DRM. Which is like a lock-in within a lock-in.

What marketing can reverse having lied to your customers, tried to hold their hobby hostage and now that you can't make ALL the rules you want to take the cool things the console can do away as a middle finger to speaking out about the consoles ridiculously stupid design? They still have to deal with the fact that people don't want the Kinect camera and the PS4 is $100 cheaper....how do they put lipstick on that pig?

No I'm sorry, any xbox fan that bought an original, 360 or wanted an xbox one, who accepts things the way they are with xbox are simply blind, selfish, and greedy themselves and deserve the company that xbox has become. I'm tempted with the xbox one but it's gonna take losing that Kinect weight to get me to make it rain.

MM wonder if I will be able to get cable channels through Xbox live. Hopefully just pay for the channels I want than these stupid bundle packages tat I don't watch 1/2 the channels.

trying to understand something....... If ps4 is so great and interesting..... Why are ps fans swarming the xbox threads and articles? Makes no sense. The only thing I come up with is ps4 must not be that interesting seeing that none of its fans talk about it. Pretty sad if you ask me. Glad I'm not gonna spend 400 to play with these bunch of childish idiots

@TreFacTor Who the hell cares what others buy. It's not coming out of your pocket. DRM has always been there. PC gamers have been dealing with it for years. Next time try reading the Terms Of Agreements on your games. You don't OWN S#!t .You only pay for a right to play the games. Quit crying over the Kinects, it's part of the hardware and that's that. Don't buy the damn thing.

@sammoth No, you need to plug your cable or satellite box into the xbox one...the xbox one is just a pass through. It's just a console that does media things...nothing spectacular...it's Ms' fault that no one knows what the console can and can't do...and this is the future hunh...a future of nothing more than restrictions, mandates, promises and uncertainty...xbox one sounds great.

@knucklez84 @WantYouBad lol, just like how elitist PC gamers enjoy and spend more time making declarations of superiority than actually playing PC games.

@knucklez84 Yeah, I really don't understand the need to troll... and I like both systems.

@knucklez84 the xbox community is KNOWN for having a massive amount of obnoxious children ranting and raving over xbox live.  Nice try ;)

@knucklez84 They spend all their time online. Sony fans never play the PS3 or have lives.

@RockingZombies I love how all the accounts making definitive pro-xbone comments are all brand new like yours.  I wonder if there is any correlation between that and the recent little scandal where a marketing firm admitted MS payed them to zerg forums and try to sway opinions.

Shady company.

@sammoth @TreFacTor Correction: there are plenty of PC games that are DRM-free. GOG, DotEmu, some of GamersGate's offerings, and some of Amazon's downloadable games are non-DRMed. Admittedly, it's mostly 6th gen era (PS2 era) games, mid-tier games (like Larian's stuff), and indie games. But, the option is there.

Consoles, by their very nature, are DRMed; proprietary software that'll only run on proprietary hardware that'll be discontinued with no backward compatibility.

@TreFacTor @sammoth You missed the point. I already know about that. I was pointing out that it would be nice is MS took on the cable companies offering some sort of digital cable. Also that it would be nice if we could choose the channels we want.

BTW: No need for the troll comments. Just proves how much of an idiot you are to assume that I wouldn't know this. You are just mad because MS tried something different. The problem with people like you is you feel self entitled and that the console should be built around you. The only entitlement you have is to buy or not buy the product.

Only when console noobs say stupid things about how much power xbox has/how good the games look/how fast and precise conrolers are.  that are 100% factually inaccurate to the point where they sound like they are saying the ocean is made of mayonnaise and it sounds so damn stupid it starts an involuntary annoyance response to such high levels of stupidity out of any human. They are simply shocked in fact most of them are sleep walking and reading/posting it is just that stupid and that is what happens. The body is reacting to the dumb things console noobs say and it can not be helped.

And the fact most console noobs have never been with in 400 feet of a real game PC to judge but anybody can pick up a dirt cheep console anywhere to take a look and then they can use them as foot rest after they take a look at the first person shooters on it.

WantYouBad

@2bitSmOkEy @knucklez84 Is that a joke? There is kids on all the systems, Xbox is known for having 20sumthings and markets to them.

Sony is known for it's huge obnoxious teenage population and "weeaboos". Just look anywhere on these gaming sites.

LMAO the biggest problem with Windows 8 was the missing start button. That was fixed.

Yet you don't like MS but, say XP/7 forever.

My gaming PC can run most on V high and I still mostly game on my console.

I was with you until the mockery at the end and the old PC comments came out of no where. You bash console noobs for reacting to stupid comments and then you become the very thing you are bashing...

@WantYouBad @2bitSmOkEy @knucklez84  i like both systems , save for Xbone , and i can tell you 2bitsmOkEy is right , ive seen way more a$$hats on Xbox then i have on PSN , im not sure where your info is coming from WantYouBad but its a tad off , people are going to act obnoxious on both sides just cause they know the people they annoy arent gonna come up to them and knock their head clean off their shoulders. But as ive said ive seen so much more on xbox live ive stopped wasting my time putting a headset on. let them talk to themselves.

@EL_Bomberdor LMAO you're a tool. Point was valid. Stop being such a closed minded Sony fanboy and go play your PS3 if it's so good. I don't even follow Xbox around. I play games on all platforms. Typical douchebag comment coming from you.

@EL_Bomberdor @sammoth Doesn't matter does it. We can go on about this all day. Bottom line is they have had past issues. That does not go away in court.

LMAO clutching straws. Really when I said all companies do it. You clearly are delusional.

@sammoth

A judge has finalised a settlement in which film studio Sony will pay $1.5m (£850,000) to film fans after using a fake critic to praise its movies.

12 years ago Sony used a fake critic to promote a movie, not a game and you have slammed the book on them, 12 years ago. Clutching at straws a lil pal.

@EL_Bomberdor @sammoth Doesn't matter does it. They have shady business practices as well and have been busted and fined for it in the past. Does not mean that they do not do it today. Just because we haven't had current news on it doesn't mean anything just means they haven't been caught. My point still stands all businesses do it.

BTW: it's called past practices.
