Why only an Xbox 360 review for Portal 2?

You may have noticed our reviews for the PC and PlayStation 3 version of Portal 2 aren't live yet. There's a good reason!

by

With the Portal 2 review now live, we've noticed some users in the comments of the video review are wondering, "Why is this review only for the Xbox 360 version?" Good question! Here's your answer:

We received the Xbox 360 version last Wednesday (April 13). We did not receive the PlayStation 3 and PC versions until Monday (April 18), and the PC version was not playable until it unlocked on Steam last night around 9:30 p.m. This gave us plenty of time to play the single-player and cooperative campaigns on the 360 version, but very little time on the other platforms. Even now, we are playing the PS3 and PC versions and testing the cross-platform play through Steam. The multiplatform reviews you read on GameSpot often read very similarly, but each one is backed up by time spent playing the game on that specific platform.

So while it may seem strange to review a game from Valve Software, a historically PC-first developer, on the Xbox 360 first, it would be even stranger (and downright dishonest, to be frank) to publish a PC review without spending quality time with the game. Speaking of which, time to get back to work!

Dear complainers: read reviews on another site if you're not happy.

i still can't believe how PC players can play with consoles. i think that's the smartest thing any game company has done and i hope other companies will try to accomplish this. being only a PC gamer (+wii of course. :) i miss out on playing with my buddies with xbox live or psn. now i can at least play ONE game with them. :)

Gamespot doesn't prefer Xbox 360 over PS3 or PC !? This is plain stupid! I'm sure in Gamespot's team there're favorite for every console! I don't work at Gamespot and I have most of the time my PS3 version of a game after the Xbox 360 version is released in store! (2-3 days of delay)

This shouldn't rlly matter, the game is nearly the same on all platforms minus slightly different graphical experiences, which shouldn't justify an increased rating anyway. If you see a 360 review of a multiplatform game that's what you're going to get on a PS3.

@analore Generally a valid point, but with portal 2 it has the steamworks for ps3 and cross platform over ps3 and pc, which was a big selling point so that is something that I think people are waiting for

Does it really matter? All Multiplats are basically Identical anyway.

@GodGundamNT1 @tttooooozzz @dipsetboy17 -- We don't choose which platforms publishers send to us. Typically, most publishers send the Xbox 360 version first, and PS3 copies later, or sometimes not at all. It is extremely rare that we get a PC version for a multiplatform game in advance, and often need to buy them because they are not provided. (Such as with Crysis 2 on the PC and PS3, which was never sent to us and which we had to purchase once released.) Valve was very public regarding what they considered to be a snafu on EA's part when it came to providing review copies to various publications. I know that conspiracy theories are fun and all, but in reality, things like this are very straightforward: we know readers care, and we let them know what's going on. Like most things in life, it really is that simple. I can't imagine having a tinfoil hat on all the time; my head would get sweaty!

Wow... Even after all these years, I can say that I'm genuinely surprised by how much people complain. Gamespot does a review for a game on a console they've had the most time with, and people complain, say that they're lying, and suggest that they're being paid off by Microsoft. ...Why can't people just take a step back and realize that everything they're whining about makes no sense to begin with. Whenever I read a review it typically makes a point of mentioning how the game performs on various systems. That seems pretty fair to all the systems to me. Who cares what they played first or what they posted the link to? Isn't the game what's important anyway? ...Oh wait... ...I'm trying to speak reasonably on an online thread... ...Yeah, I guess I'll just wait here and be buried unto oblivion by a steady stream of whining, complaining, and shouts of bias and conspiracy.

@OrionMD Stop whining; and if it's such an issue to you, go somewhere else.

nah, gamespot is horrible this generation at linking almost all multiplatform games with good/great reviews or a significant amount of interest to xbox360 pages. i for one, go out of my way to read the review on any console but the 360. case in point- tonight i watched the mortal kombat fatality video- it links to the xbox360 page, but has a ps3 ad before it as well as kratos and ps3 trophies popping up in the video. maybe they are trying to correct for some last-gen bias, but really, i think most of these guys sleep with their xboxes.

That kind of work IS no work at all. Wish I had that kind of work. Getting back to topic, GS should at least point out the graphic and sound quality of each version. 8)

Just about every publisher is pulling this kind of thing now and GS has been very good at posting these little notices. All extreme fanboys are idiots, but PS3 extreme fanboys are the worst (note that I am NOT bashing all PS3 fans). Not only is the PS3 the best (as one would expect), but eveything is a freaking conspiracy or bias or bribes. If you have a problem with 360 versions of multiplat games being reviewed first, write the publishers and complain instead of ranting here. If you haven't noticed, most games get previewed on the 360 first, too. That isn't a GS (or any site) problem. It is a decision by the publisher or developer. The 360 version is usually a little further along in development. It is easier to program for than the PS3 or the PC. This isn't complicated. Personally, I think you should be grateful that GS is making sure that before you shell out your money, you have their assurance that the PS3 version isn't just a lazy port (as a lot have been). If they released a review based on very little play on the system, publishers would have their devs polish the first couple of hours of any game that they know is an inferior port, leading to MORE inferior ports.

@athenian29 Nope, actually it was a glitch. The game was patched roughly 1 hour after I posted here. Dunno how many had the problem, I usa a GeForce 460GTX. Anyway, the patch worked and I'm finally had the Portal 2 experience without disruption. Man, what a game :)

microsoft is ran by the government. How can you sell a lot of defect systems, bring out the Kinect which is pretty cool btw and then charge us for internet play? the fact PS3 and PC gamers can cross play this game shows where the true power is at

its just good that you do it properly, the additional time taken is fine as you are making great, quality reviews. i dont care if your reviews take a day or a week or even a month after the release of a game, i will only watch Gamespot reviews...im a true loyal fan, and with good reason :)

cool, you're forgiven! lol

GodGundamNT1

Because once again just like with Crysis 2, Gamespot proves that they are being paid off by Microsoft to make gamers believe that the X360 version or even the console is the only thing to get. Gamespot should change its name to MicrosoftSpot.com

@Nodashi If you're having texture glitches, I'd suggest verifying your game cache. It sounds like not all of them downloaded properly - the pink-and-black is a stand-in texture the game automatically loads when the proper one is inaccessible for one reason or another. You may also want to reduce the texture quality, in case you're overflowing your RAM - it's happened to me a few times in the middle of Team Fortress 2, with disastrous results.

Nodashi

KK then, it's fair enought. You know, I'd not act like this if Gamespot ALWAYS played all the versions. And I'm a big critic of reviewing all versions while playing only one (and guess what, "this" one is always xbox). While we're at the PC version, some textures (including GlaDOS skin) are not working to me, they are replaced by a pink and black square pattern. Is it a known bug? Thanks.
