Why Need for Speed: Rivals is skipping Wii U

Creative director Craig Sullivan cites weak sales of Need for Speed: Most Wanted on Wii U as reason to skip over Nintendo's latest home console.

by

Need for Speed: Rivals is not coming to Wii U. According to Ghost Games creative director Craig Sullivan, that's in part due to weak sales of the Wii U version of Need for Speed: Most Wanted, which was a launch title for the platform in November 2012.

"It didn't really sell that many, in terms of the Wii U market. I would love for it to have, because we put so much effort into that, trust me," Sullivan told The Sixth Axis. "I'd love for it to be way bigger than it was, and the same for the [PlayStation Vita]."

"[Rivals] is going onto new hardware, and you have to work out where you focus your efforts," he added. "The 200 people working on this game are only capable of making so much, and doing so many different versions of the game, so we had to go with where we think the biggest audience will be for the game, and that's where we are."

Ghost Games studio owner Electronic Arts shipped four games for Wii U: Mass Effect 3, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, FIFA 13, and Madden NFL 13. In May, EA confirmed it had no new games in development for the system. By comparison, EA shipped 74 games for the original Wii.

Need for Speed: Rivals launches in November for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC.

i remember playing need for speed 2 sepcial edition at my neighbours house, so much fun back in the days,

also remember my parents buying me nfs 3 when it was released,

those were so much fun, but it seems as the graphics advanced, the level of fun decreased,

still want to check this game out, but i think i'd prefer forza5

firstly, mass effect 3 is a sequel, so only people interested in it would be people who have played previous mass effect games, therefor it means they would have a pc, or xbox 360 or ps3.  and since mass effect 3 on wii u was released after other consoles, it was never given a chance.

same thing for most wanted, it was released 6 months ago on other consoles,  if you werent interested in it when it was first released why would you be interested in it for the wii u??

i'd like to see 3rd party developers release games on the wii u at the same time as other consoles, giving it a fair chance,

I personally think in my opinion that EA should make a reboot  the Need For Speed Franchise because the games are getting boring. Every new NFS game is just a new setting and some new cars thats it.They should make a game a open world game like The Crew for example

props for nintendo gamers, Most wanted utterly sucks. Saved quite a few bucks avoiding that garbage.

Everything seems to skip Wii U. Not surprising.

This doesn't affect me I'll buy it on PS3 then again on PS4. I hope the drifting is like it was in Shift 1.

Not in stock I guess the store in your city just gave up trying to sell them. Just a thought.

Yeah Danial is right for shame for EA not to spend hours and a ton of money to bring it to the Wii U which has such a small consumer base the amount of people that buy the game would be less then the amount of copies that Pro Street sold on the PSP.

NFS games are fun, I hate GT and Froza with a passion because both are really boring.

First of all the whole reason EA is snubbing Nintendo is because Nintendo didn't want EA's crummy Origin system on the WiiU and EA acted like a bunch of spoiled kids who couldn't get their way (remember how buddy buddy they were with MS pre 180?)

Secondly I love how we hate on EA unless it's about them snubbing Nintendo again, then we're all on their side.

Also even if this was on the WiiU, would any of you have bought it anyway?  Are any of you going to buy Arkham Orgins, Watch Dogs, ACIV on the WiiU? Nah you'd rather spend $400-$500 for a slightly better looking version.  So why is this a surprise to anyone?

How on earth is this game any different than the previous NFS games?

I agree and disagree with his comment. I agree the sales of the system and game are weak. I disagree because NFS most wanted was a port of a 4 month old game. Also, by that time the game was already on sale. It's a little of an unfair comparison.

You can't port an old game and expect it to sell like hot cakes. If they only release games on popular platforms then why isn't there a 3DS release?

that's because a lot of WiiU users boycotted EA because of all the crap they did with Nintendo (i didn't i just don't like Need for Speed i think it's boring)

It was a launch game. Obviously alot more people own a wii u now and certainly more still over the holidays. Therefore more copies of games would be sold. It seems like quite a simple logic to me. Don't know why some developers have such a hard time understanding it.

No, it doesn't need third-party support at all. All it needs are the games everyone wants. Super Smash Bros. U for example.

The Wii U is getting pCARS, racing enthusiasts will be ok.

Gamespot just loves to report about games that don't come to the Wii U and make it a feature story on their Facebook. It pretty much proves how much of a bias they have against the Wii U.

i'm not being a fanboy, i'm only being realistic, wii u has no place among next gen consoles, the developers seem to think so, so just face it people ;)

There's a new NFS game in the works? This is the first time I'm hearing about this.

A 2 year old port doesn't sell well so they cancel the current version of the game? Idiots!

The last nfs on wiiu was not in stock Anywhere in my city. How can people purchase a game alot.of them know nothing about with zero stock on retail shelves!? I am in no way saying the figures would have been record breaking, but it would have shown somw sort of effort to get the product out there...

I don't think Wii U owners bought the console to play games like Need For Speed. For the Wii U, I'm only interested in the exclusive Nintendo Mario, Zelda etc. titles. Although, they were never enough to make the Wii U a worthwhile purchase.

@MajinSquall They released Fifa 13 without the Ultimate team which is a very popular feature and then had the audacity to charge people full price for a gimped version of the game. They released Mass Effect 3 without Mass Effect 1 or 2 being thrown into the mix, so if anyone owning a Wii U had never played Mass Effect 1 and 2, why would they play the third one? Also they released Most Wanted U four months after its original release on other platforms and then wonder why their games never sold on the Wii U.

Same here could not and still cannot find most wii u games in my local towns or city's.

@swimbearuk And that is why a lot of games will either get canceled for the Wii U or never be announced for it in the first place. Its owners only play Nintendo games.

@swimbearuk Who's going to buy a PS4 and Xbone for NFS. . . . ? Looks like EA is going to skip the PS4 and Xbone versions as well.

swimbearuk
swimbearuk

@lostn I'm not sure it's a case of Wii U owners only wanting to play Nintendo exclusives. It's just the Wii U hasn't had the software support it has desperately needed right from the start, which is almost entirely because of Nintendo's relationship with its third party publishers. Also, a lot of Wii U owners probably already own a PS3 or 360, so would probably just continue to play multi-platform titles on one of those.

I think Nintendo should get out of hardware development (maybe apart from handhelds), just like Sega did, and start releasing some of its games on other platforms. I'm sure a Mario game would be hugely popular if it was released across the major platforms, and would probably generate more revenue than a Wii U version.

@the_repo_man6754 People may not be buying a next gen console for NFS, but they are still buying the console, unlike the Wii U which just doesn't have a wide enough user base.

xcollector
xcollector

@the_repo_man6754 @swimbearuk Na, they're in denial. EA really believes that the PS4 & XBone will save them. They're hoping people will forget how crappy they are when they see next gen graphics.

lostn

@swimbearuk @lostn When was the last time Nintendo had good 3rd party support? Besides Capcom on Gamecube, the last I remember is the SNES days. Everyone deserted them after that because of N64's cartridges. Then they never recovered from it. People tried to support the Wii when it sold gangbusters, but their games weren't selling. Nintendo was cannibalizing their software sales. And then they pretty much gave up on Nintendo.

As for going third party. They will sell more software doing that, but Nitnendo has too much pride (and money) to stop making hardware.
