Westworld Producer Talks About Big Maeve Moment From Episode 4 [SPOILERS]

One of the standout scenes from last night's episode of Westworld--there were many--was when Thandie Newton's character Maeve digs a knife into her skin to find a bullet in her chest. She had suspicions that something was amiss, and finding the bullet inside her appears to prove that she's right.

Now, you can re-watch that scene and hear from producer Lisa Joy and Newton herself about that memorable moment from Episode 4, "Dissonance Theory."

"Thandie Newton's character Maeve is just so much fun to explore," Joy says about her. "That kind of canny intellect; slicing under the surface and looking at what's really going on, whether it's reading the desires of the people who come into the saloon or analyzing her own mind."

"When they find that bullet, it's empiracle evidence that she's not going mad, but that somebody has been f***ing with her," Joy adds.

Maeve is not an average female character, according to Newton. "She defies physical pain, emotional pain. She's so much not the typical female character. She's just driven by the truth. The idea that you've been betrayed, it ignites a passion. She can only escape by encountering death many, many, many times."

Another key element of the episode related to Maeve are her drawings of the park operators that clean up the scene when guests kill hosts. We don't have all the answers at this point, but there is definitely something deeper going on with the drawings and their connection to the overall story.
