Wednesday: The Deadly Sins of a Dark Age

We're rounding the halfway point of our free-to-play feature with Sins of a Dark Age, a MOBA from developer Ironclad Games. Now with twice the Blair Fraser!

Astute GameSpot readers may recognize today's entry in our weeklong free-to-play series: Sins of a Dark Age from developer Ironclad Games. Readers will also (hopefully) recognize Ironclad as the developer of the critically acclaimed real-time strategy game Sins of a Solar Empire. Its next game takes you out of space and into the Dark Ages. Sins of a Dark Age is a massive online battle arena, in the same vein as Heroes of Newerth or Dota 2, but with an interesting twist: the commander position. One player per team serves as a combat tactician; that player does not control a hero unit, but instead commands all the team's minions and issues orders to the other players. All the early details are in the videos below.

@Kickable: plus add to that the fact the PC actually allows for more originality and such as it doesn't have the technical limitations of the console

I wonder how they will drain my wallet. Hopefully it isn't nearly as expensive as LoL. 5-20 dollars for a costume got to be a little insane.

@grove12345 the PC players playing it actually follows the PC devs making it

@grove12345 Whether you enjoy these types of games or not it's nice to know that PC gamers have these options and they're free.

So this is what PC gamers now in days spend their time playing... followed by PC devs spending their time making. Too much shovelware crap.. Rather see small time devs put love and originality into a game Back to playing consoles.

Doesn't seem like my kind of game but I might try it since it is free.

Savage (makers of Heres of Newerth) used the same idea. This is not new. Savage had players taking the role of the troops in a fps environment. As the commander built structures with the resources acquired by the structures summoned by players, new troop types were unlocked for respawning players. Upgrades, buildings, team strategy, and castable buffs were under the control of the commander.

@Makka_HS If you enjoy it it's not a waste of time ;)

I will probably get this game as I love and still play SoaSE fairly regularly. However, my fear is that the commander will be ignored as they are in so many other titles, thus rendering them useless.

I can see myself wasting a fair amount of time on this.

Yeah i agree with the comments, the game looks very early in its stage, the animations aren't great and graphic aren't top notch but looks really appealing.

my concern is that the animations look really chunky and the combat really slow. I am assuming they will tweak it later, but it just felt a lot like click here and wait 25 seconds as we slowly dwindle each others hit points. Most egregious was the dragon. This "ultimate" beast that just didnt really feel that ultimate. where is the fire breathing and craziness? beef that piece up and this game could really be a gem. the idea of having a commander and heroes could be pretty cool if each of the roles was equally compelling and the combat was a bit more frantic.

Obviously the top video is very early (saw a lot of graphical bugs) but it looks fun. Sounds like the commander needs to learn him some SERIOUS hotkeys if he wants to be of much assistance. There are a heck of a lot of options. Still interested though.
