Watch Xbox One Boss Phil Spencer Get Icewater Dumped On His Head to Raise Awareness for ALS

Spencer nominates PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida, Valve leader Gabe Newell, and Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime to take part next.

Xbox One boss Phil Spencer has completed the Ice Bucket Challenge, after Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson nominated him yesterday. Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hyrb and senior Xbox evangelist Jeff Rubenstein are the ones to pour the bucket of icewater over Spencer on the Microsoft campus in Redmond, Washington today.

Spencer nominated Valve boss Gabe Newell, PlayStation worldwide studios president Shuhei Yoshida, and Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime to take the challenge next. They have 24 hours to do so. Yesterday, Persson nominated Spencer, Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski, and Activision Blizzard CEO Robert Kotick for the Ice Bucket Challenge. So far, only Spencer has completed it.

The Ice Bucket Challenge is a campaign to raise awareness and donate money toward research to find a cure for ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. In the video, Spencer says he is also making a donation, though he did not specify the amount.

No need for "monkey see, monkey do", besides none of them explains ALS, they just stand there for a few seconds of PR while they get a bucket of ice water poured over them - this short "lol" is the only reaction people will get out of the video and not even visit the ALS website or form an opinion.

You know what sane people do with chain-letter nonsense ? That's right, they ignore it.

If you saw Gabe Newell during one of his recent speeches, I'd actually be worried about the effect of ice water getting poured on him has on his health state, because he didn't look that healthy to begin with and a bucket of ice water might have serious health implications on him - don't tempt fate, especially for such nonsense.

You want to raise awareness ? Run some advertising campaigns or distribute flyers.

There have been fatalities doing this stunt. In the early '90s a man named Marty Benson had ice-cold Gatorade dumped on his head at a softball game, he caught pneumonia and died. The dumper was the never the same ...

While good-willed stunts are not terrible, wasting water sure is! Just donate and stop wasting.

Ha. I love how these execs constantly acknowledge each other. They work for competing companies but they always act like buddies.....meanwhile, the fanboy wars....

I'm not a very cynical person, but this whole ice bucket thing is mostly about self promotion. Know who many people get diagnosed with ALS each year in the US?  If you said 5,600 you'd be right.  That's about .001% of the population.   Alzheimers, prostrate cancer, ebola, west nile, lyme disease, paper cuts....all are bigger threats.

Pretty sure this ice bucket thing jumped the shark more than a week ago.

I'm a Sony and Nintendo "fanboy" but even I have to say, nice work Phil. It's great to see representatives of the video game industry raising awareness of real issues.

Scientist's have learned… that dumping ice water on your head is the #1 cause of ALS.

Couldnt we just keep the bucket of ice and just put Major Nelsons head in it, for like.. at least 10 minutes

Somebody should have dumped ice water on Phil and Don Mattrick's head at E3 2013.

It's unbelievable the amount of people b!tching about this article.

"Why does he have to have ice tipped on his head?"

"Why does he have to donate less if he has ice tipped on his head"

"No-one who watches this will even know what ALS is".

"This won't even make much money"

Lighten the f*ck up and accept that these guys are donating money to a good cause, and spreading the word. Damnit gamers really suck sometimes.

Good work Phil, you the man

Well at least Spencer actually made a donation along with the challenge, Saw Bill Gates do it standing in between a Jetski and a Yacht in the garden of his billion dollar house yet no word off a donation : /

Gabe Newell probably wouldn't be physically fit for this but i really like him doing so.

Would have rather seen Larry get dumped with Ice only. Phil took it like a boss, Yoshida is next!

Isn't ALS short for All Ladies Shaved pornsite? I'm glad they are donating for that research. A really good cause!

Yeah if anyone else does this, it's Reggie. Say what you will, but at least he doesn't take himself too serious and he seems like a guy who's not afraid to do stuff outside the box. The rest? Gabe and Shuhei? I..can't see it happening.

Im Impressed. Big Xbox Boss going ahead with the challenge. I very much doubt the suits in Nintendo and Sony will do the same and Gabe is like a mysterious dude who is probably not interested in doing Public events, if anything we will just donate the money in secret.

And for the Nah sayers of this challenge, The Idea is you pay $100 to not do the Ice Bucket, or you pay $10 and do the Ice Bucket. But Big Celebs and Exec are doing both and donating more money. Its to raise awareness of ALS

@bloody-hell  "Run some advertising campaigns or distribute flyers."

I argue that this challenge, being as dumb as it is is better than distributing flyers. Flyers? Gosh that's old school! Plus the ice bucket challenge is an advertising campaign. You may not visit the site but it gets trapped into your subconscious. Like an Oreo cookie commercial. This is in fact called 'viral marketing' and it apparently is working since it got you talking about it (for better or for worse). Case closed.

@dani_i89 While there are a bunch of gamers who are clearly ignorant and love to troll, I wouldn't doubt most of the whining comes from the preteens and immature gamers who haven't gained enough exp to have a healthy respect for life in general.

@sonyonly4 bill gates has made a donation, and charlie sheen has done it too(he kind of made fun of the challenge and put actual money that he was donating in the bucket)

@archav3n Don't underestimate The Gaben...I mean...this is something he could do while sitting down, technically he doesn't even have to stand up for this. I don't know, maybe you're right, icewater could be Gaben's kryptonite.

One way to find out...but I don't think he's gonna do it.

@Gazz_mann no man, it's all for show, don't you know XBOX, Phil Spencer, and everything they do and say is 100% Evil, because they don't care about us gamers like Sony does. Phil Spencer is just putting on act so they can look like they are the good guys, but we know they are "anti-consumer" and don't care about anyone but M$.

said every Sony fanchild who is still crying about XBOX policies from 2013

@Gazz_mann I was going to say the same thing about Gabe, though I could more easily imagine Reggie doing it.  But, in either case, while I think they both might be willing to do it, within 24hrs I don't know, especially for Gabe.

Try one day. Let's be fair though, completely different animals. He has more to donate. His one mil might be a few pennies to us.

@mr_nee @xantufrog @hystavito @Gazz_mann I might have thought that in the past but after seeing Yoshida drinking beers with people on a Giant Bomb stream, I don't know :).  Kidding aside, he and others have really lightened up, embraced more direct and informal communication with like social media and such.
