Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy plunge into the savage wilderness of uncharted 19th century America in the upcoming period thriller The Revenant. The film is directed by Birdman's Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, and comes to cinemas in December.

A new full-length trailer has now been released--check it out below:

Inspired by real events, the film tells the story of legendary fur trapper Hugh Glass, who is robbed and left for dead by his hunting team after he is attacked by a bear. Swearing revenge on his former companions, he embarks on a 200 mile trek across the wilderness to find them.

The Revenant also stars Will Poulter, and Domhnall Gleeson. The production was reportedly a troubled one--in July, the Hollywood Reporter quoted a crew member, who described the 10-month shoot as a "living hell."

Inarritu's desire to only shoot using natural light allegedly caused huge delays in filming, as did the decision to move the entire production from Canada to Argentina, and there were reports that there had been a huge turnover of crew throughout that time. Suggestions that the production could've been made easier by the use of computer generated effects was strongly countered by Inarritu.

"That's exactly what I didn't want," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "If we ended up in greenscreen with coffee and everybody having a good time, everybody will be happy, but most likely the film would be a piece of sh*t. When you see the film, you will see the scale of it. And you will say, 'Wow.' "

The Revenant will have a limited theatrical release from December 25, 2015, followed by a wide release on January 8, 2016.
