New Windows 10 Update Revealed During Microsoft Event [UPDATE]

Microsoft's big announcement was the Windows 10 Creators update. It comes out in spring 2017 as a free update for all Windows 10 users. Windows boss Terry Myerson said the Creators Update will offer "unparalleled new ways to create and play."

In terms of gaming features, the Creators Update will offer game-broadcasting support. A demo of Forza Horizon 3 was shown, using the service Beam, which Microsoft acquired earlier this year. The viewer can give the streamer feedback about what they want to see. The video shown during Microsoft's event showed a viewer telling the streamer to go off road; the streamer then saw that prompt and followed the direction.

Additionally, the Creators update adds Beam's broadcasting technology directly into Windows 10, so anyone can stream their broadcasts.

Microsoft also confirmed that the Arena tournament feature is coming to the Xbox app on PC. As announced previously, this lets players create their own tournaments to compete with friends.

In terms of non-gaming features, a big part of the Creators update is its 3D functionality; users can scan scan objects with their phones and see a 3D visualization of it, like this sandcastle. Additionally, the Windows Paint app is being updated with a Paint 3D feature. Not only that, but 3D functionality is coming to PowerPoint to spruce up your presentations.

Microsoft also confirmed that Minecraft items can be sent to Paint and visualized in 3D; they can then be 3D-printed.

An early version of the Windows 10 Creators update will be available for Windows Insiders this week, ahead of its full rollout next year.

Windows 10's Creators update is the first new update to Microsoft's newest OS since the Anniversary update, which came out in August. Microsoft recently announced that there are 400 million "active devices" running Windows 10 right now.

Microsoft's Windows 10 news event kicks off today at 7 AM PT / 10 AM ET, which is coming up very soon. "Please join us to see what's next for Windows 10," Microsoft says on the event's website.

You can watch the livestream broadcast right here on Microsoft's website or through the embed above from GameSpot sister site CNET. The landing page for the event event teases, "Imagine what you'll do."

Xbox boss Phil Spencer recently told people not to expect any Project Scorpio news during the event, but it's still possible there will be some gaming news. Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" is at the event, which may or may not mean anything.

According to CNET, the event is expected to bring news about Windows hardware, possibly including the rumored Surface all-in-one system. CNET also reports that a new Microsoft Band, among other devices and accessories, may make an appearance.

The New Xbox One Experience update that came out in November 2015 made every Xbox One technically a Windows 10 device. More than 400 million devices worldwide are running Windows 10 right now, including PCs, Xbox Ones, smartphones, and other devices.
