Watch the First Beautiful Trailer for the Mysterious First-Person Game, Firewatch

Campo Santo gives us a first look at its upcoming first-person game set in the Wyoming wilderness.

Indie developer Campo Santo has released the first trailer for its debut game, Firewatch, during its PAX 2014 panel.

As you can see in the video above, Firewatch is a first-person game that follows Henry, who explores the Wyoming wilderness after taking a summer job as a fire lookout. Events are sent in motion as Henry learns that a forest fire might be headed in his direction.

Details are still scarce, but Campo Santo previously said that your only human connection is over a handheld radio, which you’ll use to speak with your supervisor, Delilah, about the things you’re both experiencing.

Campo Santo’s small team has an impressive background in the games industry. Jake Rodkin, a designer and Campo Santo’s creative director, was previously at Telltale, where he worked on The Walking Dead, Puzzle Agent, Tales of Monkey Island, and Sam & Max. Other Campo Santo members previously worked at Klei, Double Fine, 2K Marin, and Maxis.

Firewatch will be published by Panic Inc., on PC, Mac, and Linux. Campo Santo said it would “love for it to come out in 2015.”

That looks like something I'd like to spend time playing. Very much impressed with some of these emotionally driven indie games, it seems evident that film and game mediums are getting overlaid to an extent I wonder if anyone ever saw happening years ago.

Are these the same guys who gave us Mirror's Edge? It looks identical in graphic style.  Same radio-style communication too. I like that game.

One thing's for sure....that newbie better put on gloves if he's rappelling down a canyon!

Really enjoying nice story/character driven games at the moment, absolutely love spending a good evening exploring and discovering in my own pace with beautiful surroundings and immersive atmospheres :) This one is looking like it'll be absolutely beautiful. For anyone else (who hasn't already played) Gone Home or Dear Esther I strongly recommend them if you enjoy this sort of thing.

Oh goody! A vague, brief peek at a game I'll forget about well before the time it's released!

Looks interesting.  Um...the dialogue...woah boy.  I cringed so bad a few times that my shoulders actually covered my ears.  I'll wait until the final product.

You could actually make an action filmed game out of the idea of wilderness firefighting.  In forest fire the fire spreads quickly in different patterns, thus the player would have to run at times to keep from being consumed.

Along with running they would have extinguishers to fend of flames, could dig trenches to reroute coming flame blasts, and a fire blanket as a 'shield' in case of getting caught in heat which would rapidly reduce life.
One would have to crawl at times to keep under smoke, hack away brush to get through areas, and such.
It would not be intended to be super realistic, though it would get components from real life.
Imagine being able to get up high and use your scope to identify where the fire is spreading, approaching it like a puzzle, and then you would get thrown into a very high action environment while you deal with problems and eventually find safety again.

SET in motion. Does anyone at Gamespot proofread anything?

this should be called Firewatching Simulator

The voice acting was a little hammy, but I wont judge the gameplay until we see more. Might not be bad.

This looks like another really creative and interesting form of art that would be better expressed as another form of media.  Video games are first and foremost games, and should always be games in some respect.  This looks more like an interactive cutscene.

That said, it's just a first impression.

the guy fell 40 feet with no injury what so ever wile rappelling. Also anyone who climbs or repels down ropes for a living will wear gloves. Also if the fire is only 2 and a half miles away, you would at least see the smoke especially from your watch tower. Guess they aren't going for realism here

i really hope that we will be able to pee and poo in this game.  i want an uber realistix experience!

Wow, I can't believe people don't see what this game's about. Isn't it obvious? The guy is fed up with the job. He feels it isn't safe so he quits and gets a job in the city with a large accounting firm filing papers. A huge explosion occurs and a power failure and when the lights come back on, everyone has been turned into zombies, except for him for some reason.

Jeez, did I really have to explain this?

so you stay in the tower untill the fire comes and beat the game ?

The guy has chubby fingers and looks overweight, how can he out run the zombie horde......so unrealistic.....

What? No zombies?

Seriously, though the premise is fresh I hope it's not just an interactive movie.

Maybe this game is about wild fire, fighting it and preventing it, and also zombies and donuts.

Love the visual style [graphics] in this one.

Okay. Its actually looks interesting. Like I want to know more about this game now. Seems something more unique. Trailer was really nice, slow and with some emotions, soundtrack fits just right to make an atmosphere. Gonna keep my eye on this one and see what will come out from this nice trailer in a future.

I didn't know that people on firewatch repelled down mountains so they can spot fires?  Why wouldn't they use a helicopter?  Especially if it was really dangerous and people were dying, I would bet they wouldn't want to have employees taking so many risks considering the benefits that would have to be paid out if they got killed while on the job.

indie not coming to ps4, that is a weird and rare news these days.

This game will flop unless it has zombies in it.

Looks interesting but I'm worried about its "Indie" status. Could miss its potential on account of a low budget.

Also, the guy sounds very much like Rich Sommer (Harry Crane in Mad Men), which is pretty cool.

@AloeVera4 Nope, not even remotely. Mirrors edge was made by the swedish big game developer studio Dice. Campo Santo is a San francisco based indie game studio. But yeah, i see the similarities.

@sotired It's a shame you feel like that. I quite like the mystery of this trailer :) It feels like it'll be very character driven and immersive. The scenery is stunning and it's looking like fairly fluid gameplay. What was it you didn't like so much? Just the lack of information or would you say it's just generally not looking to be your sort of thing?

@cjtopspin  Ha! I was about to say the same thing! Sounds a little hammy, and the guy sounds like a total pussy!

@rarson

It is called tense. The article is correct, and even if it wasn't, so what? Are you that much of an asshole to nitpick though a few hundred words and cherry pick one mistake so you can lord it over someone?

jhodgesphotouk

@oldtobie I think I might disagree with you here oldtobie, I think gaming is an incredible way to express deep narratives (if done correctly of course). Please play Gone Home if you haven't already, I really can't stress enough at how insanely detailed and immersive that game was. It really does go further than a film ever could in investing your imagination into the story. If you have played it already what did you think? I'm hoping this game will follow same kind of structure as that.

@sakaixx  This one must be even too crappy for the PS4, which already has a really low standard.  Some good indies yes, but a lot of bad ones.

m_nay2008

@Qixote i disagree  with you there are too many zombie games in the market and I've started to get bored of zombie games so for me I wish it isn't a zombie game

greenkidd529

@Qixote The sad part is there probably will be when he delves in the cave and the game twists into a survival zombie thriller.

@Qixote I'm so sick of zombies... it's done to death.

It's like putting ketchup IN EVERYTHING. I mean EVERYTHING.

sotired

@jhodgesphotouk @sotired Yes, the lack of information is annoying to me. I'm not a fan of teasers. I like answers, not mysteries. I also prefer realistic graphics, and some parts here looked cartoonish.

But the main point I had in mind had to do with the fact that I'm really impatient. This game does look like something I would want to check out. And when I see interesting movies/games/whatever announced well before their release, I have to avoid actively anticipating the end product, because waiting just isn't something I enjoy. :)

jhodgesphotouk
jhodgesphotouk

@sotired @jhodgesphotouk Haha good point, that's fair enough, mate. What kind of games are you into per chance? I imagine we might have different tastes but I'm all ears if you have something great I could try out sometime?

sotired
sotired

@jhodgesphotouk @sotired Something great? Nothing comes to mind... I am mostly into FPS games, and you probably know about those already...

I've been looking for an action/adventure game I could enjoy, but I have not found it yet.
