Watch Dying Light's Dev Diary Detailing Its Impressive Freerunning

Techland believes that its Natural Movement is a significant evolution in first-person games.

Dying Light has released a development diary that details the game's freerunning elements, or "Natural Movement," as developer Techland calls it.

Producer Tymon Smektała said that when the team started development on Dying Light they looked at other first-person games and felt that they lacked the ability to let the player move freely and seamlessly.

Lead Game Designer Maciej Binkowski said that, at first, they tried placing special objects in the environment that would allow the player to climb up various structures. When 50,000 objects still weren't enough, they realized that they'll have to find a different solution. Dying Light's Natural Movement, as you can see in the video above, allows you to climb almost everything you see in the game, with smooth animations reminiscent of DICE's Mirror's Edge.

Techland believes that its Natural Movement is a significant evolution in first-person games. Game Programmer Bartosz Kulon said that it might take you five or six hours to master it, but that once you do, it will feel like second nature.

Dying Light launches in February 2015 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. Developed by Polish studio Techland (Call of Juarez, Dead Island), the game was originally expected to launch this fall, but was delayed in May so the developer could improve Natural Movement.

Can't wait for this one. I love the Dead Iland games. DI Riptide was the game I had the most fun with in 2013, regardless df some folks not liking it. The Dead Islamd series is like a great B movie horror film.

Looks good. Note for dev, at least make it hurt when jump from that height into trash bin unless you're mutant.

This is night and day compared to what I was expecting. Heh. Was not even on my radar until this Dev Diary. Looks pretty freakin' amazing.

Jump off a building and land safely in a trash bin. Oh you try to fool me but I can tell that's just a reskined bale of hay.

My Gamespot avatar is the next logical evolution in gaming avatars. Visiting other websites will never be the same.

this game looks way too easy at a glance... one shot everything no matter what youre using and having ridiculous agility... jumping onto a zombie and then onto another.  who is this guy ryu hayabusa or something?  also this is exactly like i imagined a first person AC game looking like, well plus zombie apocalypse.

This Dev Diary article detailing Dying Light gameplay mechanics was seriously needed. This article will definitely create renewed interest for the game.

one of my most anticipated games of 2015.

Hooray for more Mirror's Edge style freerunning games.

Only one thing I don't like though is the zombie element. Zombies have been done to death.

The game's graphics are amazing looking.

Looks promising, better than the repetitive and boring Dead Island (especially after the Resort area).

dayum that gameplay looks hella smooth! if the animations for free running and combat are that fluid, i can really see this game standing out from the rest of the FPS games. really looking forward to dying light, but i'm also a big fan of games that have melee-based combat from a first-person perspective...perfect example is Dishonored, although I feel like they could've fleshed out that system even more. I can't wait!

Dunno...seems useless, unless played with a VR headpiece.  Which most people don't have...

And even then it might be kinda overrated, will have to see for myself but i have no headpiece...

I really don't even play games that much anymore getting boring.... sigh....

These guys need to release the demo already and let that speak for itself. There is already an interest and seeing the same footage over and over is counter-productive.

1. Get the demo out

2. Wait until you actually have something of substance to say until you "drop" some news

3. Get back to work and hopefully bring your release forward.

After this vid i will be ignoring everything Dying Light until the reviews are out.

@Sam_021 It is mor like Mirrors Edge with zombies, but a more open world.

@leviathanwing That's the point. Feel safe by day scared by night.  Even then their are still tons of zombies on the screen to go after you during the day.

@leviathanwing I think the difficulty will come from night time, and I'm expecting they will throw the player into a lot of scripted sequences (day or night, but probably especially night) where you have to run from zombies and pull off a bunch of moves well.

@ECH71 I can't seem to get enough of zombie games, being hunted by ex humans and struggling to survive and manage resources in an apocalyptic setting with/against other humans just screams fun for me.

Then again i can understand how others just hate em :(

@lionheart051 Same here, I have been going back to the old games I felt were actually good. There is the occasional Divinity Original Sin, but not much else excites me. 30 years of gaming and I think it's time to retire.

@lionheart051 I know the feeling... Sometimes I feel lazy to even play a videogame. Perhaps you should do like I do and save your time and money for games you can get emotionally invested in? For me it's games like Mass Effect, The Last of Us and the Walking Dead series. I always find time for those games, because they have a depth comparable to the best books, while I'll never be able to bring myself to play League of Legends or anything of the sort.

I've got 20+ in, there been times where nothing looked any good. You might just need a year or more off, world for me.
