Watch Dogs reveal was 'forced' at E3 2012 by Ubisoft

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot pushed for Watch Dogs to be officially unveiled at E3 2012.

Developer Ubisoft Montreal was "forced" by publisher Ubisoft to reveal Watch Dogs at E3 in 2012, a report on Polygon has revealed.

According to an interview first published in the April 2014 issue of Edge magazine, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot pushed for it to happen.

Speaking to Edge, Watch Dogs creative director Jonathan Morin said, "They forced us to go at E3 2012. Yves was the one who wanted us to go at that E3, even though we felt it was a bit early."

However, Morin eventually came to agree with Yves' decision, saying, "In the end, I think he was right."

Watch Dogs launches May 27 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. The game recently had its rating increased to R18+ in Australia for "references to sexual violence and sex scenes".

The Wii U version will be released sometime later. For more on the game, be sure to check out GameSpot editor Shaun McInnis' recent extensive hands-on preview of the game.

Way to throw your boss under the bus

Maybe that explains why they delayed the game. I mean it wasn't quite finished but Ubisoft was forcing them to go to E3? Thats pretty harsh.

So are they going to learn from their mistake?  Doubtful.

Random piece of news. Anyway Looking forward to this game even if it looks worse in 2014 than it did in 2012.

So delaying the game in 2013 was all part of strategy..

Still doesn't explain why it looks worse in 2014 than it did in 2012.

Watch Dogs was meant to be shown in 2013.. Judging by rumours I would take it that The Division was most suited to be shown during this years E3... Which means whatever awesome game Ubisoft reveal this year, we've gotta wait an extra year to when they say it's releasing to play it

that new trailer looks like GTA 5. I don't buy consoles for graphics as the be all end all; But I am pretty sure that the consoles are capable of far more than this.

A publisher wants to showcase their AAA game that they have being marketing for months at E3? NO WAY!!!

I love how Ubi puts out one new trailer and everybody screams bloody murder about the down grade in graphics. Even though no one really knows what system that was played on. A 360? Wii U? Who knows but the lead developer did say that the graphics on the release version would not be downgraded.

So hold off on judgment until the dang thing is released. After all Assassins Creed BF and Splinter Cell Blacklist both look amazing. So I'm sure Watch Dogs will look at least as good as those, if not better.

It's your own fault for being foolish enough to believe a Ps4 can compete with the graphical power of a high-end PC.

Remember when Ryse was annoucned and it was a first person, Kinect only, hack-and-slash action game?

Fuck E3.

Okay... I don't understand the purpose of this article.  It doesn't tell us anything.  Oh our boss "forced" us to reveal our game at E3 2012.  And?  He's not saying it wasn't ready to reveal, just that they felt at the time it was a bit early.  He's not saying the game has changed since.  He's not even relating it to the release delay.  He even admits that he feels like ultimately they were right to reveal then.  Half of this is just filler fluff about the release dates and what platforms it will be out on.  So why are we getting this article?

atopp399

They are lying.  If that was true they would have said so back then and told people it was PC footage and not cared.

It's these reasons along with the fact developers were saying the new consoles were more powerful than PCs that people are in this huge fit over resolution and FPS.  Microsoft is suffering big time because of it too now that people realize how weak the systems actually are..

crab_dribble

Why so many excuses for ubisoft from people who don't own them anything. The trailers and game play looked amazing. It doesn't look close to what was shown before. Grab your pitchforks instead of saying it was cool of them to trick people.

Well at least it's slightly more honest than DICE were about Battlefield 4 when it came to EA rushing things.

games showed at e3 are like the pictures of your combo meals at fast food places. the hamburger looks perfect in the photo but when you get it it doesnt quite look the same. u can tell its from the picture but damn

Don't dress things up to look like actual game play footage if all you're going to do is make it look like a load of fluff.

The only thing that this Watch Dogs downgrade has done is mired my expectations for The Division.

What do we bet that the Division looks nothing like the division?  Shutting that car door was too good to be true.

By now the game should be way more polished and optimized

can anyone tell me of a game that looked as good as the reveal? the final product always looks like a downgrade...

men in suits do this with everything MS told us windows 8 was the best thing since sliced bread...was it?

the car industry show us concept of there next line of cars and do they look the same?

but get mad because you believe in marketing, that you believe they want your love instead of your money and that they should be honest with you because you pay them...they sell little disc that kill boredom that's it

@GOGOHeadray  Next-gen consoles are about much more than advanced graphical capabilities. Size and scope of the world, immersion, dynamism, depth of gameplay mechanics. All of these are made better by new hardware, and I reckon they're far, far more important. But, yes, these new consoles are plenty capable of producing beautiful games.

paramortalics

@jonaadams  Yeah I agree with the other guy. It's a bit much to cry about it, but that sometimes encourages devs to give it that extra "oomph".

Better to err on this side, no? It isn't like they won't be reaping the benefits when they open sales.

@jonaadams I really really appreciate your optimism, but how often do things pan out as a "pleasant surprise" and how often do the worse case scenarios come to fruition?

Lamesy

@endorbr Well, we all know WHY the article exists. Peeps is talking about Watch Dogs looking downgraded since the early preview. GS just didn't want to explicitly say that in the article. GS wants to fan the flames without directly angering Ubi.

billzihang

@atopp399 Yep. The moral of the story is never trust big companies, until they actually deliver-- then the customer knows exactly what they are buying.

billzihang
billzihang

@crab_dribble We shall see how it looks on ultra settings and at 4k resolution on PC. I think you'll find it will rather like those 'unattainable' early trailers.

The fault is with console people being brainwashed by CEOs saying laughable false comments such as 'They are a generation ahead of the best PCs'; even employing vague meaningless terms like 'next-gen' and 1080p 60fps-- as if that's a new thing.

Navardo95
Navardo95

@Mr_Mark_Legion  Not truly...while I can see your point I don't think it is quite fair to compare the picture of a combo meal and what you get when you see it in front of you to that of video games getting big downgrades.

Vodoo

I don't know where you're from, but in the US we have a thing called FALSE ADVERTISING. It's against the law to misrepresent your product and advertise it as something it's not. These game companies need to start falling under that law and being held accountable.

Navardo95

@West123  "can anyone tell me of a game that looked as good as the reveal? the final product always looks like a downgrade...""

I can safely say thats not true but yes this much is true that some games do get a bit of a downgrade(some get gigantic ones such as this) but most games usually look slightly better when its close to its release or it looks the same..

@billzihang @crab_dribble

Do me a favor?

Just go onto any PS4 or Xbone Article and look at all the PC Leets bragging about how they can game in  1080p at 60fps and consistently mock console gaming.

All sides are douchebags who think their shit is better then the others.

billzihang
billzihang

@Vodoo Did they say the early demos were running on consoles? Actually, they made it quite clear it was running on high-end PCs and Ps4 reference dev kits (that's not a Ps4).

The Ps4 is no competition to a high-end PC-- now work out why it looked better at E3.

Navardo95
Navardo95

@Vodoo  I'm still confused to whether to agree with you or not but you do have a point...kind of..

DepletedCharge

@notfrylock1987 @billzihang @crab_dribble  The fact of the matter is that you're getting ripped off if you game on consoles. They're always behind. PC's have been able to pump out 1080p for years now and the majority of PC gamers are now at 1440p. I game on PC because I know I get the best bang for my buck and like to be able to take full advantage of what a game is really capable of. Consoles are good if you just don't care too much about cutting edge tech. But if not, then you should get a good gaming PC.

endorbr

@Mr_Mark_Legion @Navardo95Not overdramatized too much.  I'd say its more like a movie trailer.  Everything is cut perfectly to give the impact that the developer intends but the finished product doesn't always live up to the hype that the trailer created.

@Wej_accept_it @Navardo95 @Mr_Mark_Legion  True although I do believe that the "highly dynamic enemy a.i" was bit of a BS on ND's part but it didn't affect the game for me at the tiniest..
