Watch Dogs preorder perks revealed

Gamers who preorder at GameStop will get the Palace Pack mission, while Amazon shoppers will receive Signature Shot Pack.

by

Ubisoft today announced preorder perks for the upcoming open-world action game Watch Dogs.

Gamers who reserve the title at GameStop in North America will receive a single-player mission called The Palace Pack. It includes an investigation bonus that unlocks "exclusive investigation opportunities" as well as an ATM hack boost that increases cash rewards when cracking bank accounts.

In addition, GameStop shoppers will receive a Watch Dogs-themed poster designed by DC and Marvel comic book artist Alex Ross. The poster is available to see at Ross' website.

Those who preorder Watch Dogs at Amazon will receive the Signature Shot Pack, which includes a single-player mission that unlocks a biometric assault rifle and the black viceroy's outfit when it is completed. The mission will see players breaching a stronghold and stealing a package that contains the weapon.

Watch Dogs is powered by an all-new proprietary engine called Disrupt. Ubisoft Montreal is leading development on the game, with support from Ubisoft's Bucharest, Paris, Quebec, and Reflections studios.

It launches November 19 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, and PC. The PlayStation 4 version will be available "at the launch" of the system, while a next Xbox iteration is rumored, but has yet to be revealed.

Set in Chicago, Watch Dogs puts players in the shoes of Aiden Pearce, a hacker who uses his smartphone to break into the city's central operating system to control things like security cameras and also to obtain personal information.

Multiplayer in Watch Dogs will reportedly blend "seamlessly" with single-player.

Some gamers go on and on about how game publishers and developers are soooo greedy, yet they're the ones that want a game that costs millions to make for less than $60 and the ability to trade in said game after completion (which only takes a few days in most cases), thereby feeding these new titles into the used game market for others to buy at a slightly reduced price. Which is usually brings it down to what? $55? $55 that goes to the used game company and not the company that spent the time, effort, and money to make the game. And you have the audacity to bitch and moan that game companies are doing all they can to encourage people to buy their games new so they can sustain their costs? Let's also not forget that most games drop drastically in price only a few months after release.

It doesn't surprise me at all that there are very few publishers that can afford to market their games on TV for extended periods of time. It also doesn't surprise me when they're upset when they don't meet release week sales numbers. They know that if they don't meet them in the first week or two, their potential profits will decrease as the used game companies shelves get more stock due to trade ins for a fraction of the cost it took to make the damn game, yet return nearly the same amount.

Everyone wins except the game developers/publishers. I consider my self a gamer, I love playing games, and I'd like to see more great games made well into the future by both big companies and especially small companies, as they sometimes have the freshest ideas. I for one am willing to make certain sacrifices in order for that to happen.

All of these pre-order bonuses are pretty much garbage when compared to places like Newegg that give you $12 off on pre-orders of $60 games when you watch for them.

Various pre-order bonus, hey? Guess i will be waiting for a full release of this game for $30 like i do with every other POS that has seperate bonuses.

I don't get why the Alex Ross DC stuff is so popular. It combines the god-awefull cheesy costume design (Adam West-Batman-style), with uncanny valley looking faces.

Pre-order bonuses are almost as bad as the whole "always online" thing.

I wish they didn't do this sort of thing.  What a load of toilet  ?:{

Oh man, I love pre-order bonuses, they're so amazing, I wish more games had pre-order bonuses.

I hope Dark Souls II has pre-order bonuses! They could have a sword called Phantom's Bane that does extra damage to those pesky invaders so that us true fans can be rewarded for showing our support to the series. How cool would that be?

Or even better, they could have in-game microtransactions, so that when you run out of Estus flasks you can spend a couple of dollars on some more...

Oh hai guys! What's with the pitchforks and torches, are we going to do some gardening in the dar-OH LORD JESUS THERE'S A FIRE!!!

can we have some sort of merchantise instead of game contend? or better ditch preorders all together?

Good to know that this title will be making use of split ingame preorder boni too - I'll be making sure to post-order the complete edition a year after release then. (if it doesn't require uPlay, which I have no interest in and is playable offline)

This nonsense of cutting out content and selling it as preorder boni (even splitting it up, depending on where you buy) needs to stop.

I will by the standard edition and that's that, It is time that us consumers make a stand against these greedy tactics trying to get us to pay for a game that's not even released yet.

So, no matter where I buy my game, the only people that will have the full experience will be the pirates ¬¬.

I know these pre-order bonus usually don't degrade the game experience if you don't have them, but it's kind sad to know there's more content that I could access if game companies were not that greedy.

Nice incentive.

Pre-order bonuses are rarely super-amazing anyway. That's kind of the point. A piece of bonus content shouldn't be the only reason you're pre-ordering.

Better reasons to pre-order:

1) Collector's edition/Limited edition stuff, if you're into that sort of thing (I am!)

2) Easy budget-friendly payment plan. $5-10 on your deposit, pay a little off every couple of weeks. Pick up game on launch day without need for a lot of cash in hand. Great for people who have difficulty managing their finances (which is like 75% of population of the united states)

It's Ubisoft, of course there's going to be dumb and arbitrary additions.

I honestly don't mind pre-order bonuses tremendously much when it's useless stuff (IE. Fallout New Vegas pre-order perks were things like; start with a water canteen, or a suit of metal armor, or extra stimpacks etc. etc.), but when it's things like exclusive missions? That's just pointlessly cheating people out of content that's already in the game.

Shanks_D_Chop
Shanks_D_Chop

And suddenly I'm not so interested in the game... That might seem churlish but I'm really getting fed up of certain content only being made available based on whether you pre-order and with which retailer.

It's also rendered futile when the special edition gets released months after release with ALL the "bonus exclusive content" included. So yeah, Ubisoft. Nice one. I'm sure these stunts are pulled to help increase pre-order figures. But I would be very interested to actually compare figures as I suspect these moves actually reduce the number of pre-orders as people will wait for the "full" bundle.

Bgrngod

Pre-order bonuses always end up getting bundled as $5 DLC later on if you REALLY have to have it.  I have yet to ever encounter a pre-order bonus that made any kind of real difference in the game.

pffffft worst pre-order bonuses i've ever seen

HuskerMetal

The reason I refuse to give GameStop a single penny of mine, preorder bonus garbage just promotes the idea of disc locked content and day 1 dlc anything and everything to get more money before you actually get the full game you should have got in the first place.

NoHyperbolePlz

I've never liked pre-order bonus's that don't get released for free later. It is basically punishing anyone's wallet that cares about seeing more detailed gameplay reviews or post launch reviews in general.

@dpsuurhoff I completely agree with your comment. Personally, I never buy used games because I want the developers to receive full credit and profit for their  masterpiece. Plus, gamestop treats me like crap. Why should we patronize a business for a 2-6$ per person discount. STOP BUYING USED GAMES PEOPLE. Developers can't take risks with IT property because they're afraid of losing sales. So, developers have been going with what works (sells) lately: "cough" COD. Developers essentially become scared to create new franchises, ones that could end up like The Last of Us - look how successful that was. Nevertheless, I am happy to see Watch Dogs bringing something new to the table.

@Glitterpig Devs are forced to do it in order to entice consumers to buy their games new instead of used.

@HuskerMetal I get this pre-order stuff ALL the time, and I can testify to the fact that none of it has every been game changing or something that would have been missed if you didn't get it.  In fact, most of the time, the bonuses are entirely useless.

The Borderlands 2 pre-order gear consisted of "golden guns" that you have in your inventory when you start the game.  They are replaced literally the second you see a gun drop for the first time.

NoHyperbolePlz

@HuskerMetal

I've grown up with all this nonsense of overpriced Passes, DLC, DRM & exclusive day-1 silliness. I think I'm going to take a very thrifty approach to buying games this gen.

I hope the games are sold Steam style with decent sales as I won't be picking them up until I can get the whole lot of content for a decent price.

nu1mlock
nu1mlock

@acelogan1989 @Armyboy5 At least Metro gave us the whole experience if you pre-ordered it. This game doesn't as it has different exclusive missions depending on where you buy it.

HuskerMetal
HuskerMetal

Well that may be true for Borderlands 2 and other games that offer little golden guns but this article stated your preorder bonuses are single player missions. And thats the problem your not getting the full game its disc locked content plain and simple. A single mission may not matter to some but if Im gonna pay $60 for a game I expect to get all the missions available on the disc.

HuskerMetal
HuskerMetal

This nonsense is new to me, each new generation of console blows me away compared to what was available when I first started playing videogames. I enjoy my 360 but the greed and pettyness that came with this generation is out of control. I really have no interest in ps4/ new xbox because its obvious this kind of customer screw job isnt ending anytime soon. Steam sounds great I just wish it could be implemented for consoles cause I really dont have the money for a decent gaming pc.

bloody-hell
bloody-hell

@nu1mlock Oh, now I see what you mean and understand your point about the "complete" preorder for Metro in regards to content. I stand corrected.

nu1mlock
nu1mlock

@bloody-hell That doesn't change the fact that if you would have bought it on launch day (or if you're lucky, even weeks after launch) or pre-ordered it, you'd get the whole experience.

With Sleeping Dogs you won't, even if you pre-order since they're offering different exclusive missions depending on where you purchase the game.

bloody-hell
bloody-hell

@nu1mlock The "the way it's meant to be played" difficulty level of Metro Last Light is being sold separately / as preorder bonus, so no, it was not sold as "the whole experience", which is why I held off of getting it on launch-day, but am now waiting a year for the complete edition.

They'll even be making less money that way because in a year it'll be cheaper too, which in the end is only their loss.

HuskerMetal
HuskerMetal

I understand that its small and not memorable, your not getting the point that your getting ripped off. As I said before theres no point to preorders with all the outlets you can buy games from. I see it as the principle of the thing, perhaps Im just too used to cartridges and the previous 2 generations that gave you everything without some gimmick attached to it.

Bgrngod
Bgrngod

@HuskerMetal In the case of Far Cry 3, and every other game I've got a pre-order bonus for that includes a "level", the content was one of about 60 various side missions that was over in done in about 5 minutes tops.  They are scraping off about 1/10th of a percent of the total game to set aside as a pre-order bonus.

You get can hung up on the idea that "it's on the disk, I'm entitled to it!" pretty easily, but that simply ignores the point about what it is exactly that you are really missing.

I can easily testify that what you are missing, is not something you have any reason to be upset about.  It's NEVER memorable in any way.. ever.
