Watch Dogs is most preordered next-gen game in GameStop's history

Video game retailer also announces that it will hold launch parties at 3,500 stores across the US on the evening of May 26.

Ahead of Watch Dogs' much-anticipated release next week, video game retailer GameStop announced today that it will open 3,500 stores in the United States the night before to mark the release of Ubisoft's open-world game. On the evening of May 26--Memorial Day in the US--GameStop will hold launch parties where attendees can participate in contests and giveaways, and also get a look at new footage from the game. In addition, if you attend a GameStop midnight release party you can play Watch Dogs on PlayStation 4 starting at 9 p.m. on May 26.

GameStop is going to such lengths to support the release of Watch Dogs because, according to GameStop's senior VP of merchandising Bob Puzon, the game is "proving to be the highest preordered next-generation console game" in the company's history. He didn't say what game previously held that record.

Watch Dogs is not only breaking preorder records for GameStop, but also Ubisoft itself. Earlier this month, Ubisoft said Watch Dogs is the second most-preordered game--last-gen or current-gen--in the company's history. The company also says Watch Dogs is on pace to become the most successful new IP in video game history. If that sounds familiar, it's because Activision also contends that its upcoming shooter, Destiny, will be the most successful new video game IP ever.

Watch Dogs will be available May 27 across Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PS4, and PC. The Wii U version is coming later. Reviews from games critics aren't available yet, but comedian Conan O'Brien reviewed the game and gave its a thumbs-up, though he questioned why protagonist Aiden Pearce's jacket looks so funny.

If you preorder Watch Dogs at GameStop, you'll receive the Palace Pack DLC, which includes a single-player mission, an "investigation bonus," and an ATM hack boost. The PS3/PS4 version of Watch Dogs includes 60 minutes of "exclusive" gameplay content.

GameStop is also offering various sales promotions around Watch Dogs. If you purchase a PS4 console, Watch Dogs for PS4, and a 12-month PlayStation Plus subscription, you can save $10. You can also save $25 when you purchase Watch Dogs for any platform and a preowned smartphone. In addition, GameStop PowerUp Rewards Pro members ($15/year) will receive a 40 percent bonus on any games or accessories traded toward the preorder or purchase of Watch Dogs. Lastly, if you need an Xbox 360 or PS3 controller, GameStop will be offering them for $10 off.

We recently got to play the first hour of Watch Dogs, and you can watch a replay of our live-stream right here.

On other news, Hakuoki limited edition could be the first game in history to have a comb.

Nothing to do with the millions of new consoles with not much games to play on them I bet. Well, I pre ordered mine for my PS4 for two reasons the one I stated already and it looks good.

I think I'm one of the few who didn't pre order. I've never had trouble before. Pre-ordering just seems like a marketing scare tactic.

Besides, I just can't get excited about this. To me, all I see is GTA with a Hacker theme. Meh, I'll wait and see what the feed back is online. I'll pass for now

I dont think this will be a let down the likes of aliens:CM, but it will be a let down. It promised so much, yet its a pretty bland empty city. Ive seen a lot of complaints about the driving, which is hard anyway on a game that starts lagging really bad when you drive at speed.

The mini games feel really out of place. Coin collecting 3d mario style, shooting blocky 80s style digital aliens. Then theres the cyber drugs which when taken make for more mini games but as a digital hallucination. These things are just jarring when surrounded by the serious world of the game.

The running around is very much like AC. The shooting is very much like splinter cell. And of course there is the ubisoft trademark of showing things in the surrounding area by linking in to ctOS(or sync in AC or climbing a large rickety tower in FC3).

The driving, is meh. Its not awful, but its not great either. Maye Im more forgiving as Ive seen a lot of people say that even gta ivs driving was much better.

All in all, Id say most will still enjoy it, but nowhere near as much as they(or I) thought we all would. And under no circumstance should this game ever be thought of as "next gen". It just looks like any other over hyped 360/ps3 game with a crappy PC port.

I am sick of open world games with 3 people walking down the street. Its Chicago so there should be close to 3-million people yet the streets are barren. Second Son made me cry with how empty the city was and this looks even worse.

I am waiting for reviews and word of mouth because I am betting its crap.

Is it really a TRUE "next gen" game if it's on last gen systems?

comments consistently turn into anti fan boy posts and just bickering and arguing amongst people. Im sure that this game will be ten times better than the public discourse on this page, that is pretty much a definite. As for game stop upgrading their midnight launch for watch dogs, in my opinion, i think it's pretty cool. I already planned on going and picking up my copy at midnight anyways. Its cool that game stop even does this as we have all experienced how digital downloads go now a days.

Just found out pirated versions are already in the net. But only console versions, not PC. Are pirates taking Rockstars steps?

BTW people you will die if you get hit by a train but everyone npc will ghost whip riding it, it's funny.  Also you can't drive and shoot, you can only use your cellphone while driving to hacks shit, but cops will shoot at you while they ramp you with their cars.  This game should change it names to "Trailer Dogs : Hype Edition"

a lot of you going to be very disappointed.  Let just say if you play Assasin creed and know how to use a Smart phone than you have play this game.  It is so much like Assassin Creed it's not even funny, in order to unlock CTOS area you need to find your way up an antenna buildings. Ubisoft does this with Farcry also, nothing have change. Not much of combat, most of your missions are using the phone, others combat are also on your phone, hand to hand combat are automated cut scenes, you don't control it.  You have different weapons but you will barely uses it, due the consequence system if you choose to shoot over chasing and using your phone to kill.  Seems the game force you to use your phone.  Graphics are not like the over hype you have been hearing, except for one area of the game seems like they spent shit load of time on it which it's okay but ain't no next gen if you compare to it PC, maybe for consoles.  High settings will require 2gb VRAM, Ultra settings will be 3gb VRAM.  Let just say Custom max settings with 8x MSAA will eats 4.6-4.9gb of VRAM usage on the GTX Titan.  It eats so much vram and don't even look close to modded skyrim, which tells me the textures are very trashy and not optimize.  You can go shopping buying new clothes but the problem is that the you one type of clothes like in the poster and video we have seen, your choices are the same shit with different colors and that's it.  The best thing in game as far is graphics is Aiden clothes and animation, it actually adapt to the weather.  The choice of vehicles are not bad, but doesn't matter what cars you pick they all drive like it's on ice and have no different in driving handling beside how fast it accelerate.  So yes if you play Assassin creed and riding horse, than this will be same with modern gadgets and cars.  Anyway if you think I'm Bullshitting, than please quote me and and save it somewhere, than comeback when the game release and prove me that I'm wrong.

What is the "Gen" defined for gaming anyway?

psyphonx

No surprise since there are not that many next gen games and Watch Dogs isn't an exclusive.

bbq_R0ADK1LL
bbq_R0ADK1LL

Can we drop the whole "next-gen" thing please? It's current gen. The consoles are here, they exist.

Also, I know this is straight from a press release from Gamestop, but it reads like a commercial. Including all the pricing stuff at the bottom of the article is nothing more than a free ad for Gamestop. Nice journalism.

Most pre-ordered "Next-Gen" game in history.....  LOL

How much history is there for "Next-Gen" since it's still very new LOL

Good marketing LOL

Can people at least wait till the game comes out before praising or bashing it?

I realize that being on the anti-hype bandwagon is "cool" nowadays, but shouldn't we wait until we actually know, rather than speculating based on trailers and limited amounts of released gameplay?

To me it's not truly next gen till it's only available on "next gen". That takes about a year for the real next gen titles to emerge on new consoles. (Minus the bundled launch titles of course)

bldgirsh
bldgirsh

There's no true "nex-gen." There's games that use up most of the hardware. And this is one of those games. Which is why its only doing 900p and 30 FPS.

EcksTheory

@RC-Sev 360,ps3 and PC have been up for a few days.
360/ps3 looks horrific. As for the PC it looks better buts its still empty. Not a lot of people or cars. Performance issues are pretty bad, although Ill give ubi the benefit of the doubt and say theyll be putting out a big day one patch.

All in all, its shocking that gtav looks almost as good, and performs much better than WD ultra PC settings.

@onixevil i guess 6 month is consider as history.  Where do Gamespot get their writers, make me laughs, but I'm sure that title alone get Gamespot big bucks from Ubisoft.

charlievo

@aghio for consoles Next gen is just a sales pitch.  Cause instead of saying next model of consoles, they rather say NEXt GEN, cause people will automatically think it's Next Gen Graphics so it must be really good.

@straightcur "next-gen" is not limited to games on the newest generation of consoles.

It could mean gameplay as well as next-gen graphics.

How can you not feel it.  We're literally being crushed and force fed with it daily like we were with TitanBro.

You aren't allowed not to feel it.

Uh, what in the hell do you think people everyday all over the world fall for all the time. Marketing and hype drives everything we purchase or haven't you noticed. Just take a look at your own buying habits and what you have. Yeah exactly, you're in the same category!

@shingui5 Or they are falling for new styles of gameplay and an innovative way of doing multi-player...

Erebus

@tweakgame I'm pretty much sold on the Dark Souls-esque multiplayer aspect alone. It's a great idea for an open-world game. While I get a sparse population could be immersion-breaking for some, it makes sense in the context of the game. Imagine trying to find the hacker in a sea of hundreds of bodies. It would be incredibly tedious. Imagine trying to create individual profiles for each and every citizen when there are literally over a million people potentially walking the streets.

This is hardly an issue for me. Gameplay always comes before realism.

You should see the early streams on ps4. So many graphics trolls

@Erebus Titan fall & Dark Soul II both shit not qualify for 9.0 rating

At least Titan fall Ok for 9.0 but actual rating is 7.0 only

But Dark soul II that fucker genuinely not qualify for 9.0 rating that shit score 3 or 4 rating only

@shingui5 @memenotu one cannot know if ANY game is good before playing it and thus anyone, buying any game without trying it is the same.

The game looked interesting and its bringing something no game has before it, sounds like its worth the money to me.
