Watch Dogs has 8-player online freeroam multiplayer mode

Creative director Jonathan Morin reveals new details about Ubisoft's upcoming action game.

by

[UPDATE] The live Ubisoft Montreal Watch Dogs Q&A session on Twitch has just ended. It's unclear if there will be a replay, but if there is, we'll add it here.

The original story is below.

Ubisoft's much-anticipated upcoming open-world action game Watch Dogs will feature an 8-player freeroam online mode, creative director Jonathan Morin stated today on Twitter.

Unfortunately, that's all we have to go on regarding the Watch Dogs freeroam multiplayer mode right now. The game also includes a head-to-head multiplayer mode where players will hunt down other human players and use their hacking skills to affect the world to their benefit.

Looking for more Watch Dogs news? Ubisoft Montreal developers are currently holding a live fan Q&A over Twitch, which you can watch below. Watch Dogs launches May 27 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. The Wii U version will come sometime later.

For more on Watch Dogs, be sure to check out GameSpot editor Shaun McInnis' recent extensive hands-on preview of the game from his recent trip to Ubisoft Montreal.

I shudder at the thought of the development of multiplayer support. The last game to mention it a few months before release was Mass Effect 3 and look how it ended... they wrapped it up with a rushed, massively lore-breaking ending which resulted in an equally-sized backlash from gamers.

I miss the old days when the single-player part of video games was the most important part and received the most attention from developers.

My question is - Will I be able to host my own server (Steam integration or standalone) and is the game free of uPlay DRM and UbiSoft account requirement ?

I think the answer to these questions is "No", which is why I'll be skipping this game.

UbiSoft's Twitch stream was supposedly a joke when it comes down to questions answered - They cherry-picked a few dumb, obvious ones and ignored the real interesting ones, then deleted the Twitch recording after realizing they screwed up. (but I'm almost sure there's a mirror somewhere, it's the internet and someone might have gotten a hold of it before they removed it)

If there's plenty of things to do and opportunity to muck about 8 player free roam would be great. I gave up with GTA Online when I realized my stats decay if I decide to give the game a break for a bit.

don't expect you'll be able to connect with ease!

What? 8 players only? Even battlefield 4 already has 64 players support for next gen consoles. How embarassing is it!

I hate those people who say "If the game is fun/awesome then I don't care about the graphics."! Come on guys...! This is a next gen game! This should be fun and awesome but also must be graphically insane. Then what is the fact having these new gen consoles?! There are still some games on 360/PS3 which looks much better than what I saw now and they are all fun!

Microsoft came, put down an envelope and said: "Say nothing about the XBO performance, but don't make the game look better on other platforms whatever it takes." Ubisoft employee opens the envelope and while it hurts inside he just push the downgrade button.

Still many of you clearly forget about something. The original announcement back at E3 2012 was showing a demo running on PC. The trailers and everything we see is definetly from a console version, it's the "mass market" after all and there can be backlash, when the final version will not depict the actual quality. So until I don't see some Ultra PC settings label on these videos I say it's still looking just as good as two years ago.

And by the way just f* off with the downgrade storm, if the mechanics and the rest of the game works fine, then it will be a massive hit!

@gtaguy77  First off, you're comparing two different types of games. One is a first-person shooter that has a main focus on multiplayer, while Watch Dogs is an open-world game that mainly focuses on single-player. What you also fail to realize is that BF4 uses servers, and with all things considered (I'm referring to invasion mode and tablet co-op), Watch Dogs will probably use player-hosting, which means the multiplayer will run on someone's console while others connect to it. Name one open-world game that features multiplayer with over 16 people that isn't a mod. Even the ones that have 16 people use servers, like GTA Online.

With all that said, what is embarrassing is your apparent ignorance on the subject and/or your argument based on absolutely no thought process. Do yourself a favor next time, especially if you don't want to give off the impression of being an idiot: just use a little bit of thought and maybe do some research, specifically if your knowledge is seemingly this abysmal.

Just thought I'd tell you that you're an absolute moron getting butthurt because you can't think for yourself.

You bet is has. How else - other than with extreme violence, guns and highly clicheed male-power-fantasy-character-design - are you going to sell a game to the average western juvenile? :P

@wexorian  the delay killed the expectations? .. but they made the gamebetter because of the delay. How is that rational?

Xam_Yume

@deathwish026  watch dogs multiplayer has never been done before.
The multiplayer isn't 8-player freeroam deathmatch. It's during the campaign.

When you are playing the campaign, up to 7 people can be playing campaign in the same city. You will see them as normal NPC's and vice versa, but you can take missions to haack them. You can even stalk them, and do surveillance on them, just for fun, and they may never know.

I, at least, find that really, really exiting.

M413FIK-E
M413FIK-E

Yeah, its weird because the new Batman game has no multiplayer, and Xbots be nut riding the game. They also say iNfamous sucks, because it has no multiplayer and because of that it is not a true next gen game. Gotta love that fanboy logic. Also i think its funny how people seem to think Titanfall is so next gen, when it runs on a 10 year old engine and can't even provide a single player campaign, the game is 6v6 with mostly dumb bots running around.

Xam_Yume
Xam_Yume

@_Judas_  Not exactly. You will play as Aiden during campaign, and see other players as NPC's. They will see themselves as Aiden, and you as the NPC. You will all be playing free-roam campaign, but in a city where other players may stalk you just for the hell of it.

@danielmarandi Let us break down that people REALLY want out of a GAME

-A game that is visually appealing and doesn't look like doo-doo

-A game that WORKS properly and isn't a buggy mess

-A game that is FUN to play and doesn't bore you to tears

-Is it on PC? If yes, then more power to the devs, if not then boo to the devs

Watch Dogs seems to have it on the first and third, just depends on the second, but if all of those three fields are filled, then it's sold, Watch Dogs will be a good game, it even looks fun now

Also the fourth is well...Just a choice of platform really, I do have an Xbox 360 but I am a PC gamer by heart

hochstreck

@danielmarandi

Well. That's the main point some of the smarter gamers and developers around are trying to make:

From a gameplay standpoint, there isn't much point in developing new consoles, as long as they don't offer something fundamentally new regarding possibilities for gameplay.

Pretty much everything, which can be done with Xbox One and PS4 - except more technically advanced graphics(which get exponentially more expensive to produce) - has been done before.

Example: Highly playable massive multiplayer matches, with more than 50 players on each side, already have been possible 9 years ago in games like WoW.

To be fair, the XBox One has something quite interesting. Stuff like advanced optical motion sensoring, but people weren't to keen on that because of its potential for consumer monitoring etc.

Seen from that perspective, the Wii-U actually appears quite unique and before it's time, because it tried to step out of this generation cycling. It's basically a more powerful, more economical and easier to program XBox360, with a new controler that offers new and convenient possiblities to control games and display game-related information.

A stop to these frantic generation cycles, would benefit both the consumers(because they get more games with more and better gameplay and fresh concepts) and developers(because they can take more risks and split their risks better between products, as they don't have to spend even more shitloads of money on more technically advanced graphics with every new generation, while the consumer base isn't growing fast enough to amortize this) alike.

deathwish026
deathwish026

@danielmarandi  i agree with the people that say.... except when ime thinking abount a now current gen purchase. now that has to look amazing. at the end of the day its gameplay that gets you hooked in a game not visuals.

Optimist_Pryme
Optimist_Pryme

@danielmarandi "Next Generation" only means newer hardware ALL AROUND for the ENTIRE SYSTEM, not *just* GRAPHICS -- meaning, no guarantee that everything will look more shiny than life itself... it's a given that the same cheesy and "dated looking" indy and mainstream titles will appear on the "next gen" consoles the same way they always do.

PS - If graphics are so important on "next-gen" consoles, why then is Minecraft going to be on Xbox One?  Oh wait, what am I saying... that's so high-end for Xbox Done, may as well be red-lining the hardware as the ultimate bench-test.  ROFL xD *trollface*

Xam_Yume
Xam_Yume

@Forcecaster  Downgraded? No.
First of all, with the advancements in simulation systems that has been added, ALL platforms have had some visual fidelity reduced (understandable, as the full dev kits for PS4 and X1 has only been in the developers hands for a year).
Second of all, you need to see the game running in it's latest build. It looks a little different than the story trailer that last came out.

@chuckles471 @kitmeep  well I watched the 14 Minute gameplay and the driving machinics are WAY better than GTA 4, but that was just the eye, we'll see when the game releases.

The idea of having a cell phone glued to one hand is very contemporary. Can't help but smiling at the idea when you see how much the youth, nowadays, can't take a drop or go to bed without their cellphone.

As for violence in games naturally its in most games. I tried to imagine one were there is no enemy, no one to fight against, and its hard. Unless we talk of card games. But I'm sure most people, when we say video games, don't think of Solitaire Royale as the first thing that comes to mind. Probably has to do with the thrill of hunting, something my cat never gets tired of.

@hochstreck @kitmeep  Not like the Eastern design policy of, "we lost the war mentality so every man is androgynous and every woman is submissive because we want to feel stronger than the characters".

@Xam_Yume @wexorian You can never satisfy everyone. If a game comes out and it's buggy, people whine because the developers should have taken more time to fix the bugs. If a game is delayed for further polishing, people whine because they wanted the game sooner... What a f*d up world we live in.

Kr3isen

@M413FIK-E See heres the thing though, only xbots and the media are pushing Titanfall to be the next big thing, nobody else cares. Mark my words just like every COD clone that came before it itll come out, sell its 3-4mil copies across all platforms and that will be that.

A year from now people wont even remember Titanfall just like nobody remembers MoH or Homefront.

@Xam_Yume @alien33@wexorian For me a delay for polishing is ALWAYS a good thing. I am very patient when it comes to new games, because I work and I no longer have the time for games as I used to (good old college years...). I will certainly play Watch Dogs, but it will probably be a Complete Edition in 1-2 years. Until then my backlog is full. I just finished Max Payne 3, so I am quite behind. :)

@Xam_Yume @residude  I wouldn't feel special or awesome knowing I beat a team of noobs on one of the games which holds your hand more than any game before it. I think you believe too much of ea and ms marketing (the two evils of the gaming industry remember).

If I want to feel special I will play battlefield 4 and be the most valuable squad/team member by supporting everyone and helping kick ass. If I want to feel special I will play planetside 2 as part of a huge scale war were every single person make a difference.

titan fall offers none of that. It is a great casual game, and ea have marketed to the right console since xbox one is not for hardcore gamers and more for casual gamers (kinect, tv etc are strong evidence for this). But I guarantee you no hardcore gamers are gonna play titan fall for very long.

Xam_Yume
Xam_Yume

@residude  No I haven't. If you put hardcore players and newbies on the same team in most other games, the results will feel really different. Veterans may complain about the new players holding them back and all that crap.

The extremely big difference here is that in Titanfall you can also have a team of newbies against veterans, and the veterans will win, but the newbies won't necessarily feel like they lost or played a bad game. THAT's the beauty of how all the systems are implemented.

In CoD you can easily end up with extremely one-sided matches that won't be fun at all for the losing team, because of how the game is designed.

Titanfall has a much, much more positive impact on the gaming experience, and it makes you feel special and awesome. And, if you're a veteran/hardcore then you'll feel particularly special and awesome.

howiex89
howiex89

@residude  no he hasn't, COD is not fun for new players or those that don't have the time to play hours every day to get half decent

residude
residude

What you said is the same for any multiplayer game. Veterans and newbies can play together and have fun and play the way they want though skill is widely varying. The skilled players will always win but everyone will enjoy themselves. That's how you sell titanfall? You just described EVERY multiplayer game.

Xam_Yume
Xam_Yume

@Kr3isen @M413FIK-E  Xbots, media, console agnostics, and PC players to be correct.
The only ones I have experienced not to hype it up are either people who haven't played it, or people who never will. If you have a PS4, that's cool man. Those of us with 360, X1 or PC who played the beta for tens of hours may know more about it.

Titanfall isn't call of duty with mechs and jetpacks, its something much more, and the gameplay mechanics reveals themselves slowly on repeated plays.

Titanfall is one of the few games where a newbie and a veteran can play the game together, have fun, AND play the way they want even though the skill is widely varying. The skilled players will always win, but both teams will enjoy themselves.

You predict that Titanfall will be forgotten in a year.

I predict that in a year it will have been a nominee for game of the year (not necessarily win), and easily made more than 100 million dollars in total sales.

Wanna put money on which one of us is right? ^_^

deathwish026

@Kr3isen @M413FIK-E  yeahhh medal of honour was doomed from the start as it tried to be a better cod. so everybody but sony fanboys are pushing the media for titanfall. that actualy makes sense seeing as tho ps4 aint getting it lol. if it was on ps4 too then there would be no hate for it i guarantee you that. they should make 2 titanfall games and leave it at that.
