Watch Dogs coming to Wii U?

Amazon, GameStop, and Best Buy listings suggest Ubisoft's upcoming action game in development for Nintendo's newest platform.

by

Watch Dogs may be on the way for Wii U. Listings on Amazon, GameStop, and Best Buy suggest Ubisoft's 2013-dated action game is in development for Wii U, in addition to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

An Ubisoft representative was not immediately available to comment.

Last week, leaked marketing material for Watch Dogs suggested the game would ship this holiday season for "all home consoles."

Ubisoft has yet to announce a list of platforms or a concrete release date for Watch Dogs. Next-generation consoles from Microsoft and Sony are believed to be on store shelves for this holiday season. Sony may even announce the PlayStation 4 tomorrow.

Watch Dogs was announced during Ubisoft's 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo media briefing last June with no official word on platforms or a release date. It is an all-new intellectual property in development at Ubisoft Montreal that focuses on hacking.

Wow, I was watching the new Wolfenstein preview and saw the new Watch Dogs trailer.  Lone behold, at the end of the advertisement, the Wii U was listed as one of the systems the game would be available for.  Interesting, very interesting indeed.

I just hope Nintendo doesn't go around criticizing violence in games and saying they work for children's care after investing so much on shooting games lately. Time to drop the hypocrisy eh?

With PS4's starting price being $430, and max price $529, I can see the Wii U standing a better than good chance in the next gen race.

I might get the $430 PS4 though.

I could imagine how Watch Dogs would utilize the Wii U's tablet. Especially with the hacking. I'm on the fence about this, but if it happens it happens and I'm sure Wii U owners will be very pleased. The game does look phenomenal. I for one will be getting Watch Dogs on one of the higher end consoles. As for The Wii U not getting anything decent... well while it doesn't have a significant library to bolster about there are some games on the horizon that I can guarantee will be awe inspiring. We already know that Monolith is working on the next Xenoblade which looks phenomenal by the way. And of course there's a new Zelda title in the works. So nothing huge to talk about yet, but I can see some bombs dropped on us at e3.

New games will not be of choice to be purchased on older consoles. especially now that we know PS4 and 720 are on the talks. Why would somebody buy a game for a system that will be washed out soon? of course the smart choice would be to purchase it on a much newer console WII-U.

I'm not going to read all of the comments here, but I imagine several of them have already said something like "Next Week on GameSpot: Watch Dogs for Wii U cancelled. Someone important said ' Watch Dogs not a good fit for Wii U'".

I think the Wii U will have the best version of this game, If it is equal tho i think the Wii U has features for this game like the tablet controller.

Reminds me of a futuristic Assassin's Creed type game, looking forward to it regardless of platform, but if it does come to Wii U, that will be the platform of choice.

Sounds good if true.  This means that Next Gen can scale quite nicely between Wii U, PS4, and 720.

WingChopMasta

Interesting news. This game would make good use of the gamepad with the hacking features and map. If it is for current gen consoles than it would make a perfect port for the Wii U. This could also attractive more 3rd parties if they can see hardware stressing games on it.

So ya let the wagon jumping Nintendo fans praise this news right after they spit fire in the faces of Ubisoft for a damn Side scroller!! I understand you have to eat any scraps you get but if Ubisoft caters to you misguided fools with this game I hope we do not hear anymore about what you do and don't get since Ubisoft has always been a loyal Nintendo developer and one of the few that continues to be.

@chavao666 It's a 3rd party, not them. If anything, wouldn't most people be glad if they caved and accepted more violent games, just to rid themselves of the whole "e for every wimp" thing they got going for them? I'm just saying though. Not white-knighting.

@StinkySkunkGirl You should be reading the other comments here. These are the voices of the gamers that the developers are going to hear.

Nintendo has EA at the announcement of the Wii U to explain their excitement for the new system and even announced a new partnership/bond between the two companies. Within a single year, EA has announced complete abandonment of the Wii U. Nintendo allowed this to happen.

This has caused a lot of anger from certain Wii U gamers who might have been excited about the potential in the Wii U. Gamers like me who purchased the Wii U on day one, expecting many great things over the first year of the system, are now jumping in on the hate-train because of our frustration in Nintendo. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Watch Dogs was cancelled for the system. Pretty much the only gamers that Nintendo has collected with the Wii U are Nintendo fanboys. Nintendo should have pushed more hardcore-centric philosophies into the Wii U operating system and encouraged the big companies to port their hardcore titles onto the system. That's how you cultivate a new gamer; you don't half-ass your efforts by announcing a system with potential but leave it up to the developers and publishers to generate interest in the system.

@StinkySkunkGirl That would be hilarious and I would not be surprised. It does seem like Gamespot dishes a lot more negative press than positive.

Judging from the latest developments, it seems Ubisoft, EA and Activision will invest heavily in WiiU the second half of 2013. The new ports will also take advantage of the WiiU's superior hardware specifications (starting with NFS:Most Wanted U). Now. If those who own a WiiU ignore those titles they release, you can be damn sure 3rd parties will drop support for WiiU next year. So please, for the love of god, support their efforts.

chavao666

@chipwithdip I know it's third party, but still they had the investment in the title for the right to release it on WiiU. And that's exactly my point, it's time already they started giving their statements "worried about the consumer behavior" and just sell every single shit they can. I understand the lack of serious topics and cartoonish gaming back on SNES, but showing any kind of resistance for selling/ producing games for a more mature public is pathetic. Gaming hasn't been a "kid thing" for years now...

@s_h_a_d_o I feel that would be unnecessarily cumbersome for the player, though. Why both with the trouble of playing with a controller and having additional functionality on a physically separate device when the Wii U Gamepad incorporates the screen into the controller?

hystavito
hystavito

@s_h_a_d_o @SIDEFX1   Yes but developers would have to worry about things like screen sizes, software versions, whether the user wants to use another device or even owns one, and so on.  All that trouble is eliminated with the WiiU.

Still, being multi-platform it's not likely they will go to lengths to make the WiiU gamepad experience awesome.  It seems like it would be a perfect fit for this game, but it will probably just end up being a simple thing tacked on, like the same onscreen UI for other platforms just gets displayed on the pad and lets you touch elements rather than use the controller.

@NagaSadow yup, will be getting Amazing Spiderman, NG: RE & NFS:Most Wanted when they come out..since I somehow missed it on PC :s ..got most of the NFS games on PC

@NagaSadow Why "for the love of god, support their efforts"? Did you buy a bunch of Nintendo stock recently? Or do you just really want to see gimmicky tablet gaming succeed, because it's such an incredibly important innovation for the industy? I just can't get over this blind, undying support for Nintendo. If someone is trying to do something really creative and interesting then I can see pleading with people to support it... but the WiiU?? I don't think Nintendo is at risk of going belly up so if the hundreds of iterations of the same old series are what floats your boat... then you have no need to worry.

WingChopMasta
WingChopMasta

@alrepairs @WingChopMasta I am not surprised you do not get the term 'troll' and just use it when someone does not support your view. All I do is speak the hard truth with facts and common sense knowledge to back it up...not being a fan and being upset about how Nintendo is acting is again not trolling.

Which is why in this article I was surprised and thought this game would be a great catalyst for Nintendo. If I was a troll I would have complained about it..you know like PC players do when a game comes out on a console...

There. I've repeated myself, you furry hating nitwit. I don't know what the point of that was, seeing as you can look up and reread what I said an unlimited number of times, but since you clearly don't seem to have any inkling of a clue as to what sarcasm is (Your post wasn't sarcasm. Sarcasm is clever. And sarcastic), I doubt even YOU know why you asked me to repeat myself.

StinkySkunkGirl

@tightwad34@WingChopMasta@StinkySkunkGirl They just report whatever is going on. As for who is writing, that barely matters anymore. It seems like Eddie Makuch is the only writer these days.

Somebody put glue in Eddie Makuch's chair a while back. Powerful glue. There's probably a solvent to fix this, but his coworkers at Gamespot realized that they could save money by not buying this solvent, and also have an excuse to have Eddie Makuch write articles for them so they don't have to.

Eddie Makuch is glued to a chair and types about anything and everything game related on Gamespot news like it's his own personal blog. It may as well be at this point. That's pretty much it, mystery solved.

It pays the bills, sure, but one can only write enthusiastically about League of Legends so many times before losing their sanity. Thankfully, he's glued to his seat with an infinite supply of extra chunky peanut butter.

nephili232

@Chico86_basic The Tablet controller is literally the only unique thing the WiiU does. That's the only thing they can hang their hat on and say, This is why you should buy a WiiU from a hardware perspective. And you're comparing it to online gameplay or HD graphics. A device that allows me to check my inventory without pausing... is as big a gimmick as online gameplay!  And fingers crossed Sony doesn't screw up the dual shock too much. I'm not going to give Nintendo any props for forcing me to use motion controls and a tablet controller.

And why should I support Nintendo, a company that does absolutely nothing to innovate in thier software, by buying third party games on the WiiU, rewarding them for doing nothing new. All the more reason to support them? Why? What kind of logic are you relying on here. I will buy my third party games from companies that actually make interesting and new first party games.

nephili232
nephili232

@wcwj26 Lmao. I didn't want to jump back on here but you sir are a complete clown. If you honestly think that ridiculous picture of 3 games is in any way relevant, I don't even know where to begin, there's so much wrong with it. It might well be one of the dumbest things I've seen on the internet. My jaw dropped... I just can't get over that picture. I was going to ask you how many new IPs were established over the entire lifetime of the Wii but... I give up. If you're that daft... I'm speechless.

And the PS4 will for sure be disappointing. But unless it releases with no hardware improvement, no internal memory, only a gimmick vita controller as a selling point and tries to sell us year old games for 60 bucks... only then will it begin to approach the WiiU in terms of treating gamers like morons.

wcwj26
wcwj26

@hystavito All this advancement with PS4720 your talking about is just troll fodder. These consoles want offer even HALF of what the fanboys have been dreaming up in their heads.

Trust me, Sony will break millions of hearts tonight and the the fanboys will go into 'damage limitation mode' trying to salvage the lies and make believe they been spewing out since the Wii U was launched!

Chico86_basic
Chico86_basic

@hystavito So, do you think third parties should shift their focus to Nintendo because they are still the only home console with a big touch pad screen that can stream full games from the TV into your hand not to mention asynchronous gameplay? Thought so. It's not gonna happen! Then why should third parties develop for Sony and Microsoft new consoles? New features and better graphics, right...

Chico86_basic
Chico86_basic

@nephili232 @NagaSadow Back to your point, if you think Nintendo is basically releasing iteration of the same old series over their consoles than more reason to support games like this. You know? At least there will be more option to the player and not some kind of shovelware and Mario again. The tablet is as much of a gimmick as anything else at this point. Did HD change so much the way you play games to call it an innovation? Wasn't online a thing of 2000 with the Dreamcast? But sure, Nintendo deserves worse for trying something different every time and not the same dual shock controller since the first Playstation.

HydePark1980
HydePark1980

@hystavito It's understandable not to be excited but when Nintendo hasn't given much info on the future of a new console it could mean one of two things. Either they have nothing in store (highly unlikely) or they've got something big on the horizon.  You don't show your full hand until everyone else is ready to.

As for graphics something tells me that once developers get more familiar with the Wii U it'll hold it's own in that department.

hystavito
hystavito

@NagaSadow   Well sorry but you're probably going to have to own multiple consoles again.  Think about it, the next Xbox and PS4 are going to have updated hardware, several years of progress.  That means much better graphics, physics, possibly other elements like simulations and such going on under the hood, etc.  Compare that to the WiiU which is maybe only slightly more powerful than the PS3 and Xbox 360.

This is bad news for the WiiU, at least for the big multi-platform 3rd party titles, the so called serious gamer games that Nintendo wanted to win back with the WiiU.

Imagine 2 years from now, the next iterations of big titles, they are going to at least be graphically far superior on the other consoles, how is the WiiU going to compete with that?  I don't mean overall, just how will it draw people to buy those titles for the WiiU?  This is assuming they even get made for WiiU, because even if there is some money to be made, there may be things the WiiU simply cannot do to the developers standards, or maybe cannot do at all.  In that case, the best you will get is an alternate title for the WiiU that just tries to capitalize on the franchise name.  I remember some of those for the Wii, the only one I can recall right now was Far Cry something, it was terrible.

EDIT:  I feel like lately with all the Nintendo fanboy/hater stuff going on that I have to point out, yes I do own a WiiU and I also owned a Wii way back, well I split on it with a friend, he still has it, but anyway :).  I don't hate either, but the Wii almost entirely dissapointed me and the WiiU so far isn't making me very excited.

NagaSadow
NagaSadow

@nephili232 @NagaSadow

I'm not sure if you're some troll or anything, or a raving Sony fan. Thing is, Nintendo makes my favorite games, but I've allways had to invest in Sony machines couse of 3rd parties. I just dont want a shitload of consoles under my TV once again. I'm sick of it.
