Wasteland 2, Sequel to Fallout's Predecessor, Launches on September 19 After 26 Years

It's taken more than a quarter of a century, but we'll soon be playing the sequel to Wasteland.

Sequels in gaming are sometimes referred to as "long-awaited" when it's only been a few years' wait, but here's one example where that really applies: Wasteland 2, the sequel to 1988's Wasteland, will arrive on PC on September 19, its developer announced today.

Brian Fargo, founder of developer InXile Entertainment, announced the date on Twitter today, writing, "Official Wasteland 2 release date... September 19th! The 20+ year wait is soon over." Saying "20+" undersells just how long it's been, as 2014 marks the 26-year anniversary of the original Wasteland's release.

Wasteland 2, which fans successfully funded through Kickstarter in 2012 to the tune of almost $3 million, was originally scheduled to launch this month before it had to be pushed back until September. The RPG has been playable in Steam Early Access for quite some time as InXile updated it with new content, improvements, and bug fixes.

Like Wasteland 2, the original Wasteland was directed by Fargo, who, at the time, worked for Interplay Entertainment. When it was released in 1997, the original Fallout--developed by Fargo and Interplay--was effectively a spiritual successor to Wasteland. Fallout has gone on to become a hugely successful series, thanks in large part to Bethesda's Fallout 3 and Obsidian's Fallout: New Vegas, while Wasteland went silent for the better part of two decades.

This is the only game I care about. Which is kind of a sad indictment towards the state of gaming.

Wasteland 2 is both the Wasteland sequel AND the Fallout 2 sequel we've been waiting for.

I find the developer's use of f-bombs encouraging. (1 minute 45 second mark.) :)

Gameplay wise = might be good. Graphic wise = this is one ugly looking game. I would prefer if they sticked to original Fallout graphic style. Isometric view, not this poor 3D graphic. I would like it to look like Divinity Original Sin graphic wise. Ohhh yeah this is the truth.

I think old age impatience is getting to me,

I am sure Divinty OS is great and maybe because of a little too much over saturation info from wasteland 2, I just can't pull the trigger on getting them. I don't think I could handle the pace in my old age.

Too much instant gratification in RPGs now adays, it's ruined that genre for me.

The paint job is horrible, especially with characters models. I sincere hope the gameplay and story will makeup for this.

Could Gamespot stop it with the stupid click bait titles! The title should be "Wasteland 2 Release Announced". Then the description should be "Sequel to Fallout's Predecessor, Launches on September 19 After 26 Years".

@Thanatos2k I like Fallout 3 and you're right: Wasteland 2 will be the true successor

Glen_Runciter

@Thanatos2k

you are right.
my favourite games are Fallout 1&2 and Planescape: Torment.
that genre has been dead for a loooong while now, but Wasteland 2, and Tides of Numenera are giving me some hope that it might return...
and of course there is Pillars of Eternity too, but f*ck Obsidian, they are terrible...

Glen_Runciter
Glen_Runciter

@Karmazyn yeah, it has a really cheap look. well, Fallout 1&2 weren't pretty either, but all that ugly, brown and grey crap added to the atmosphere.

and anyway, if it were my decision, every single game would just use the same engine as Fallout or Planescape Torment, with some Kotor-ish games mixed in every now and then.
those were some perfect games...

@depman1972 It's cool to hate on pc when mommy couldn't buy you one.

@CallMeDuraSouka Divinity OS has a great combat system and starts off interesting story/world wise then went downhill vertically after the first Act, the game itself I found WAY too easy once you get a hold of it

jenovaschilld
jenovaschilld

@CallMeDuraSouka Dude you need to try, divinity os, shadowrun returns, blackguard, wasteland 2 and banner saga. This is not hand holding kiddie pool games here, crank up the difficulty or not, turn off the tutorial or not, you will have an amazingly good in depth adult rpg game from times of old with UI and graphics of today.

You hear the buzz of the CD-rom spinning as it loads Fallout, you smell the heat coming from that non-video card pc as it boots up baldurs gate, or the glare of shadowrun off that huge box shaped CRT monitor and its large 15" screen! Come on D&D rules are set, role play options check, invite some friends over for a LAN, pull the trigger son it is as good as the hype.

jenovaschilld
jenovaschilld

@Revenant_K The characters portraits and graphics are sharp, detailed and like that of old very realistic. The gameplay does not hold your hand, rush in and die, you gotta use strategy. Story - do not know yet. The game ran smooth only on my high end gaming pc my 2010 built struggled not because of lack of power but I think, lack of game/graphical  tweaking on the developer side.

Darkhol0w
Darkhol0w

@lilmcnessy The title is correct..what are you talking about? Wasteland 1 released in 1988 and it's the predecessor aka father of Fallout. The sequel of said game releases this year  and 26years have passed since then.

jenovaschilld
jenovaschilld

@Darkhol0w I was both sad and happy, sorrow and relief. Sad and angry that it got more delays - happy that I can hopefully finish Divinity OS and Shadowrun returns expansion by then.

Gladestone1

Meant like a baldurs gate style game apologize for that was tired last night lol

jenovaschilld
jenovaschilld

@Gladestone1 Nothing wrong with Divinity comparisons as that is incredible game of the same style and genre, heck I wish I was compared to Chris Hemsworth more as I know i should be. I played 8 hrs into the steam early release and damn is it good.

My only complaint is that is runs slow on all of our pcs from geforce 450gt to radeon r9. when the game is played at 1080p and maybe multi monitor support. It needs some tweaking on the developers end, and while some think a gamepad is a sin, this game should have it added by the team.

EcksTheory
EcksTheory

@Gladestone1 a first person shooter???? Are you high? Its an isometric rpg with turn based combat. It is the same style of game as divinity. Just a different setting.

@colbster Yeah I pointed that out to him when the video was first posted some time ago, he took notice of it :).

Darkhol0w

@HAZCHEM88 Wasteland 1 was released in 1988 and is the "father" of Fallout. Fallout wouldn't of have existed if not for Wasteland so yes..it's true.

Same goes for King's Bounty being the father of Heroes of Might and Magic.

unreal849

@grenadehh  I'll definitely play it. I like a good throwback rpg every now and then.

lilmcnessy

It's not that it has false information. It's the way it's worded.

jenovaschilld
jenovaschilld

@lilmcnessy I still do not understand your complaint, or what you are reading into. I guess gaming during that time years ago, I knew immediately what games the headlines were talking about. Your complaints are goofy and remind me of extendz commercials "but it was supposed to make me bigger... down there"

nodbgp
nodbgp

@grenadehh @unreal849 "Nobody cares or wants turn-based isometric RPG's." A bunch of people in the industry and media.

Divinity:OS comes out, it's turn-based, it's isometric and it's a RPG.

Guess what, it's on the best sold list of steam since launch.

So talk for yourself.

lilmcnessy
lilmcnessy

@jenovaschilld @lilmcnessy There's too much in the titles. This isn't the worst one but the titles are becoming like Up Worthy article titles like "This kid dropped his penny, but you'll never believe what happens next!" Obviously not that bad but they are slowly turning into that. Which is the complete opposite of what your thinking I'm thinking.

grenadehh
grenadehh

@nodbgp Never said no one wanted it. Just said they're 16 years late for the care train. Only hardcore interplay/black isle fans are going to buy it and only then for nostalgia. Not to mention I own all the divinity games and don't even care.

Idk I think Failbarblo 3 ruined isometrics for me permanently.

jenovaschilld
jenovaschilld

@lilmcnessy @jenovaschilld Your right I understand what you mean as Eddie Makuch here at gamespot is notorious for shock headlines just to trooolll for comments. "could your bathroom be secretly plotting with nazis to kill you?, found out after the break"  That is how they make there dollar and it is gaggy after a while, but the above wasn't so bad.

hystavito
hystavito

@grenadehh I'll admit I mainly backed it due to the nostalgia factor.  I'm actually not super excited to play it, and I didn't even try the early access.  Unfortunately I must also admit that while I loved old school RPGs back in those days, these days I often lack the patience for turn based combat.  I guess we'll see if it keeps my interest.

n0xinab0x
n0xinab0x

@grenadehh @nodbgp I plan on getting it, why the hell not right? And I'm not just about the whole nostalgia value not lasting long. There's fansites all over the place dedicated too older games. The Pre EA Command & Conquer, Jagged Alliance (Bears Den), X-COM(Strategy Core), Heroes of Might & Magic (Celestial Heavens). Oh and can't forget No Mutants Allowed with Fallout.

lilmcnessy
lilmcnessy

@jenovaschilld @lilmcnessy Yes that's what I'm talking about. I agree this isn't the best example but it is getting annoying and I have been straying away from Gamespot since the changes that have happened to it.
