Warner Bros. working on AAA Lord of the Rings game?

Online resume mentions new AAA game based on J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy series; "Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor" trademarked."

Warner Bros. Interactive may be working on an all-new AAA Lord of the Rings game, according to the LinkedIn profile of a former employee of Monolith Productions/WB Games Seattle. The profile was spotted by Superannuation.

This person said he created storyboards for the new and unannounced Lord of the Rings game in December and January, after MOBA Guardians of Middle-earth had released.

Developer Monolith Productions posted a job listing in May for a cross-generational AAA action-adventure game. Meanwhile, the company just last week opened a job requisition for a lead mission designer with "open-world mission design" experience.

If Warner Bros. is working on a new Lord of the Rings game, its name may have already been revealed. Rights holder The Saul Zaentz Company filed a trademark application in May for "Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor," covering game software, among other things.

The last Lord of the Rings console title was Lego: Lord of the Rings, which released last year. It followed Lord of the Rings: War in the North, which launched in November 2011.

A Warner Bros. representative was not immediately available to comment.

Look up MERP and discover the ugly truth of this whole thing:  Time Warner wielding a giant litigation mace against its fans, and then turning around and stealing their idea.

"Warner Bros. is working on a AAA LOTR game...that probably won't be AAA quality, knowing them."

Third age: Total war is still the best LOTR game i played, sad to see no other can outdo a mod.

If I could name one thing Warner Bros doesn't know how to do, it's that they don't know how to publish a great LOTR game.

An Open world game similar to Skyrim based on Middle earth lore, including the Silmarillion could be awesome, if done right. Just not another MMO.

@deusex4444

I really hope it doesn't have combat like Kingdoms of Amalur. Overrated game, and overrated combat.  How one thinks it's better than anything that came before or after it, is beyond me. I think people just like to echo what others have said about it, just to sound smart and nerdy.

The game bombed too, as swell as the studio.  While I don't like see people losing their jobs, the lack of quality in that game speaks for itself and its utter failure.  It's one of the most generic games I've ever played.

I never really liked any LoTR games, I mean, I played a lot of them but the scale never felt on par with the movies. A Total War scale game would have been fun at the time. Not sure this still holds anything for me now.

I do hope they pull a good game. I really meant it as it is such an interesting world to explore and adventure in.

@Tzardok You're right, now that you mention it I -would- like a Total War: Middle Earth game.

If this is truly made with passion it will no doubt be a game to check out.  This series desperately needs an AAA quality middle-earth open world game!

Unless its BFME3 I'm going to pass. Its a shame EA gets all  the  licensing rights for LOTR stuff.  EA is notorious for not supporting their games and randomly shutting down the servers.

Would really like to see Sega take over and make a LoTR game based on the Total War engine.  Ya ya I know there are mods but we want the real deal.

(yes I also know they are making a total war warhammer fantasy game too)

Currently Warner has the license. They also own Turbine which runs the LoTR Online mmorpg game.

EA dropped the licensing agreement as they rushed Conquest out the door ahead of time because they wanted that money in their pockets instead of supporting the games they had put out.

That's why the LoTR Battle for Middle Earth RTS series games came to such a screeching halt. Not because they weren't good, they were very good, but because some people at EA wanted to make the wad in their billfolds even bigger. This is one of the poorest examples of asset management in recent gaming history, or as some at EA at that time might have put it as they lit their cigars with hundred dollar bills, "Just another log on the fire buddies, just another log. Ain't nuthin to worry 'bout, snicker snicker".
