Warner Bros. working on AAA Lord of the Rings game?

Online resume mentions new AAA game based on J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy series; "Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor" trademarked."

Warner Bros. Interactive may be working on an all-new AAA Lord of the Rings game, according to the LinkedIn profile of a former employee of Monolith Productions/WB Games Seattle. The profile was spotted by Superannuation.

This person said he created storyboards for the new and unannounced Lord of the Rings game in December and January, after MOBA Guardians of Middle-earth had released.

Developer Monolith Productions posted a job listing in May for a cross-generational AAA action-adventure game. Meanwhile, the company just last week opened a job requisition for a lead mission designer with "open-world mission design" experience.

If Warner Bros. is working on a new Lord of the Rings game, its name may have already been revealed. Rights holder The Saul Zaentz Company filed a trademark application in May for "Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor," covering game software, among other things.

The last Lord of the Rings console title was Lego: Lord of the Rings, which released last year. It followed Lord of the Rings: War in the North, which launched in November 2011.

A Warner Bros. representative was not immediately available to comment.

Look up MERP and discover the ugly truth of this whole thing:  Time Warner wielding a giant litigation mace against its fans, and then turning around and stealing their idea.

"Warner Bros. is working on a AAA LOTR game...that probably won't be AAA quality, knowing them."

Fixed

Third age: Total war is still the best LOTR game i played, sad to see no other can outdo a mod.

If I could name one thing Warner Bros doesn't know how to do, it's that they don't know how to publish a great LOTR game.

An Open world game similar to Skyrim based on Middle earth lore, including the Silmarillion could be awesome, if done right. Just not another MMO.

I never really liked any LoTR games, I mean, I played a lot of them but the scale never felt on par with the movies. A Total War scale game would have been fun at the time. Not sure this still holds anything for me now.

I do hope they pull a good game. I really meant it as it is such an interesting world to explore and adventure in.

If this is truly made with passion it will no doubt be a game to check out.  This series desperately needs an AAA quality middle-earth open world game!

Unless its BFME3 I'm going to pass. Its a shame EA gets all  the  licensing rights for LOTR stuff.  EA is notorious for not supporting their games and randomly shutting down the servers.

Would really like to see Sega take over and make a LoTR game based on the Total War engine.  Ya ya I know there are mods but we want the real deal.

(yes I also know they are making a total war warhammer fantasy game too)

If they were smart, they would either reincarnate the RTS LoTR Battle for Middle Earth 1 & 2 series, or make a new series of LoTR RTS games in a similar vein.

I mean, for crying out loud, they have the license and could do it. EA dropped it because they would rather see the license money go into their bonus checks than into maintaining one of the best and most popular RTS franchises ever made. So sad.

they should make good combat and gameplay system, that what matters most

It hasn't to be AAA but please make it as GREAT as Witcher 2/Dragon Age Origin.

I'd love to see an open world game set in middle earth. It would be a dream come true. And Middle Earth isn't gigantic, so it could be reasonable to make it all.

War in th Noerth was pretty good, but Return of The King was the best.

Say what you want to me guys but the LOTR games (especially Return Of The King and excluding Conquest) are one of the if not the BEST movie based/licensed games ever created!!

OMFG YES YES YES!!!! Please for the love of god don't be a MMO!!! From the bottom of my heart I deeply hope its a strong single-player Skyrim-esque open world 3rd-person RPG experience that tightly follows Tolkien's books!!! I would forget 30% of my life problems I swear!!!!! Holy shit and please be next-gen only as well!!!!

@deusex4444

I really hope it doesn't have combat like Kingdoms of Amalur. Overrated game, and overrated combat.  How one thinks it's better than anything that came before or after it, is beyond me. I think people just like to echo what others have said about it, just to sound smart and nerdy.

The game bombed too, as swell as the studio.  While I don't like see people losing their jobs, the lack of quality in that game speaks for itself and its utter failure.  It's one of the most generic games I've ever played.

@Tzardok You're right, now that you mention it I -would- like a Total War: Middle Earth game.

Currently Warner has the license. They also own Turbine which runs the LoTR Online mmorpg game.

EA dropped the licensing agreement as they rushed Conquest out the door ahead of time because they wanted that money in their pockets instead of supporting the games they had put out.

That's why the LoTR Battle for Middle Earth RTS series games came to such a screeching halt. Not because they weren't good, they were very good, but because some people at EA wanted to make the wad in their billfolds even bigger. This is one of the poorest examples of asset management in recent gaming history, or as some at EA at that time might have put it as they lit their cigars with hundred dollar bills, "Just another log on the fire buddies, just another log. Ain't nuthin to worry 'bout, snicker snicker".

@WheelerJared not gigantic?? dude the distance from hobbiton to mordor is about 1200 miles. and that's in a strait line. if you would walk that distance non stop at a normal pace it would take you about 600 hours. just saying.

The-Neon-Seal

@WheelerJared Lego: LotR is. You can litterally walk all the way from Hobbiton to Mordor. There is even a secret route to Angmar in the north :)

@DeViLzzz For you maybe. I'll never get enough of LOTR. What I'm bored of the insane amount of no-brainer shoot-them-ups and BATMAN.

The-Neon-Seal

@DeViLzzz But we're still waiting for the definitive game. Lego came close, but I want one based in a more visually realistic style.

@PS4_Next_Gen Strategy games are good indeed but their Rpg's sucked. And medieval battlefield didnt sold too much but it was a good game.

it was Conquest i think. Star Wars Battlefront like.

PS4_Next_Gen
PS4_Next_Gen

@arqe The Battle for Middle Earth series has some original ideas like the "war of the ring" turn based strategy mode with instant RTS jump in. I would like a third installment in the series.
