Warframe open beta sees over one million players

Sci-fi themed free-to-play shooter achieves milestone after being in open beta for two weeks.

The Darkness II and Star Trek developer Digital Extremes has announced that its free-to-play shooter Warframe has seen over one million players register since the game went into open beta two weeks ago.

The shooter had been in closed beta since October 2012, but Digital Extremes switched to an open beta during the week starting March 18.

Warframe is a sci-fi themed third-person shooter which sees groups of four players work together to dispatch waves of enemy troops. The game recently saw its 7.0 update, where it added new characters, abilities, and levels.

Warframe is currently in open beta on PC and Steam. For more information on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

I'm really loving this game right now.  I don't know what possessed me to download a f2p shooter, but I did. F2p quality has definitely increased of late.

Great game to play with friends. Playing by youself is just boring in this game. Those who do not like this game must have played by themselves or with pubs. My crew is having a great time leveling up and figuring out the game together. Though we are already craving new content. Lets hope they keep updating frequently.

The number of complaints on the lack of content in a 'BETA' are truly amazing.

Jon, you need practice in playing the game. It's usually much faster paced then what you showed...although naturally you are new to the game and that is a acceptable excuse.

Warframe is ultra-satisfying from a gameplay perspective but you can split the game's 4-5 enemies in half so many times before it feels stale. More variety would make it awesome.

PS- Also more stages. Space station and snow isn't enough.

It's fun, but its still a beta so don't expect it to be really polished. FYI, alooooot of grinding in this game...

This game is still in it's infancy, so expect a lot of things to be half complete or lacking (hence why it's still a beta).
Otherwise, I quite enjoy it...

I just dont like the new update of modding system, think the old version was better. They could of just expanded the modding within that for extra boosting would of worked better. Apart from that this game is AMAZING.

latest update killed the game for me, no more modding weapons is fucking crap

Pros: Great combat mechanics, good graphics, 4 player coop, fairly detailed leveling/upgrade system, tolerable AI

Cons: very few environments that get recycled like crazy, over half of the weapons/gear can only be accessed with real money, the cost of items is ridiculously high (it will cost you over $100.00 if you want to unlock everything, and things as minor as adding colors to your suit are as pricey as $5.00-$10.00).

Conclusion: If they add a lot more environments, add more blueprints (items that you can earn with in-game currency), and decrease the cost of their pay-only items, it could be a very good co-op game.

so, whats the big deal with this? it kinda looks like your run of the mill multipler thirdperson shooter.

I played it and I liked it.

I'll make sure to play some more when I get a chance and get my friends in on it too.

I'm surely one of them, but trying something is hardly a commitment. They shouldn't rely much on those numbers. I'm willing to give Warframe another try after a bulk of updates. So far, I say it's good enough if you're really out of anything else to play.

It's a pretty decent game but it is lacking in a lot of departments. The two main ingredients required for these dungeon/instanced based games to be enjoyable are a diverse and vast range of craftable equipment and good dungeon and boss designs.

I know this game is only in OB but if the developers can work on increasing the amount of gear and designing more engaging dungeons and bosses then I think this game can be on the same level as games like Monster Hunter.

I doubt many of them will stick around because the game is so repetitive and boring after just a couple of hours.

I was away from shooters for a long time this game brings something really addictictive and fun to play, that this genre was lost, mobility, flexibility and flow.

Played for ~3h straight. Great fun for an mmo, and definitely a good example how to create a good mmo. Big kudos to devs.

@archiasif An MMO where you go kill 4 wolves then 4 angry wolves then 4 slightly angrier wolves is lame.

@_Roo_ Well when you start charging for content we get a right to complain.

@_Roo_ Every month they add a bunch of new things which also makes you feel like the game is unwrapping around you with time. You know like when you watch a sitcom and things progress every season. Warframe gives you this feeling because it always brings new stuff to the table with each big update. There are games out there that just drop all content at once and then almost no big updates with years. Warframe began small but now the variety of weapons, the change in the modding system and many other things like new terrains and the sentinels brings nice change to the game.

@evil_m3nace Actually, sadly, he's not new to the game, he's played it before. There's clip of him playing an earlier version.

He is a TERRIBLE gamer. Unwatchable.

@Dradeeus Agreed. I played and enjoyed the beta but there's not enough there to keep me coming back. The stability of the game with regards to crashes (of which I had none) and the gameplay at this stage is really encouraging though. The finished game could be epic if they don't do anything stupid like suck the fun out with microtransactions that boost your character and make playing it legit to level up feel like a grind. I'm looking at you, Blacklight: Retirbution >:(.

@N4o7A its how they delude people into thinking a game has more content than it really has, offer a very simple system of progression that takes a long time to achieve, carrot on a stick.

evil_m3nace
evil_m3nace

@Xenuri actually, you can finish entire levels without killing anything. and the ones that do, you don't have to shoot, use melee weapons.

@PETERAKO

It has good design, controls well, and has enjoyable co-op play for the low price of zero dollars. I wouldn't say this games a big deal but if more games move in this direction we'll be seeing quite the positive change in the free to play market.

NaturalDisplay

Other than that, I think the game is pretty solid. The space ninja theme is very interesting and a lot better than the usual western developed shooter that features a square headed space marine on steroids. The design of the warframes are very nice as well, it reminds me of cyborg armour design in MGR.

This kind of looks like ME3 MP, sounds like it too, not that that's a bad thing.  Is that how it plays?

@FenixNoT @Dradeeus say wuuut? i play BL:R, im a high lvl, i didn't buy anything, and i own people at higher lvls, WITH THE DEFAULT GUN if i have to, saying BL:R is a pay2win is like saying CoD is an ever evolving game packed with good and mature players

@xsonicchaos @SteamyPotatoes Tenno are actually humans who have a natural resistance to the Technocyte virus, and they use the Technocyte-infested materials to make their Warframe exo-suits, and their resistance is what allows them to operate them without becoming the distorted, insane monsters that you see on some missions.

Zatto-1
Zatto-1

@pelvist @Zatto-1 Except it requires constant internet connection to run and you play with other people just like any mmo. True it isnt an mmo, my mistake, but the way it is it just might be.

@Stogin Camera is positioned just like in ME, you have suits with different powers, different weapons to choose, etc. I havent played ME3 mp so no idea, but combat is fluid and fun.

@stev69 I heard though that skill tree is really diverse and similar to FFX's grid system, but I'm assuming you mean a grind fest for the gear
