Warcraft movie teaser shown at Comic-Con

First teaser video for new World of Warcraft film from Legendary Pictures featured warrior taking on an orc.

The first teaser video for the upcoming World of Warcraft film was shown today during the Legendary Pictures/Warner Bros. panel at San Diego Comic-Con.

i09 attended the panel, noting the footage featured an armored warrior taking on a "huge green orc." Director Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) was enthusiastic about the project, in part because he has the chance to create a new world, he said.

At press time, Legendary Pictures had not released the footage in an official capacity.

Jones also reiterated that the Warcraft movie will begin filming in early 2014. Minutes before the panel began, Jones teased on Twitter, "150,000 tweeters gift coming soon… It's not what you think… ;)"

The big-screen adaptation of Blizzard Entertainment's fantasy series was announced during E3 2006. Spider-Man director Sam Raimi was at one point attached to the film, though he would later drop out, claiming Blizzard "mismanaged" the film.

The Warcraft film is believed to have a budget that exceeds $100 million, and is intended for release in cinemas in 2016.

Don't tell me that trailer costs $100,000,000?

The white "stuff" that comes out of its wings looks stupid.

only time will tell if this will be good, or just another D&D f level movie

@vadagar1 Those types of movies do not get made by Warner Bros./Legendary. Those types of movies do not get Duncan Jones as a director and those types of movies do not show up at a Saturday, H hall panel at San Diego Comic-Con.

No, this will be A level. But you're right. Only time will tell if it's great director, great studio and high budget will actually make it good. Lord knows those factors don't always guarantee it...

I was there. It was live action. Looked f***ing awesome. I'm stoked.

Also I was highly occupied by  my nerdgasm at the time of viewing so I could be wrong, but i swear... the warrior in the teaser, human, aside from picking up a huge shield with an alliance insignia on it, was holding Frostmourne. It looked just like it from what I remember.

Again, I could be wrong.

Also there was a horde watchtower in the distance that looked very much like the ones in game. Very true-to game visuals and proportions from what little I saw.

(edit) come to think of it, I hope I'm wrong about the sword. It looked so much like it but the man wielding it did not look like Arthas and the setting wouldn't be consistent with when he acquired Frostmourne in the canon.

@spikepigeo I'm confused, tho. If filming for this movie hasn't started, how did they have a live-action teaser? Don't get me wrong--I'm not doubting that it was live action (except the orc--pretty sure big orcs are gonna all be CG). But it sounds more like they just showed off a "proof of concept" due to all the bad press the movie has received over the years. It's possible the footage they showed has NOTHING to do with the actual movie, no?

@ikcizokm @spikepigeo I only have as much information as the other 6499 people in that room at that moment. All I know is that inside that bulky, beautifully proportioned armor was an actual person.

The orc, though we didn't see his face, was definitely CGI and for all I know the entire scene could have been as well -- done in a green room.

But it will be live-action, yes. Unless they change their minds before they start "filming" which i highly, highly doubt.

And as for your last question, that sounds about right -- a "proof of concept". Could change a lot of stuff between now and 2015.

They should make the story about Arthas becoming the Lich King.

Warcraft 3 was awesome.

Gilbert Gottfried as Thrall or I'm not going.

I don't see why creating a Warcraft movie is so hard, the story's all there.

@AlexFili Video game stories never translate well into movie stories, that's why.

@Thanatos2k @AlexFili Books translate well to movies, and there's lots of talented authors who have written very good books set in the Warcraft universe. The War of the Ancients trilogy was great, IMO, and would make a terrific series of films. Just my $0.02.

@ikcizokm @Thanatos2k @AlexFili Books don't often translate well into movies, Especially if you've actually read the book. A movie based on a book based on game would just be asking for trouble. Especially if they're trying to appeal to people other than die hard warcraft fans.

@moonlightwolf01 @ikcizokm @Thanatos2k @AlexFili Let's disagree there. A HUGE number of Oscar-worthy movies were based on novels and short stories. Sure, there have been bad movies based on good books, but saying books don't translate well to movies displays ignorance of 100+ years of cinematic history.

Also, Legendary Pictures isn't making this movie to appeal to "die hard warcraft fans." They're taking the flavor of the source material and making a movie to appeal the widest audience possible.

This is crap. Is the movie just going to use in game graphics?

I thought video posted above was this trailer.  Instead I get to see some tool flying around on a bat with some lame doom and gloom music.  Nice.  Did Eddie post that?

I used to love Warcraft until they turned it into an MMO, now I just want it to die already so Blizzard stops using so many resources on it. Curious to see what the movie will turn out like.

I want this to be like the story of the original strategy games, ANIMATED CGI please, and have at least a few decent, maybe even recognizable voice actors that respect and maybe have actually played the series, but ugh...this is Activision.

2016 means 2020.  Anyone make that joke already?

@GreySeven I think that's a bit optimistic if Blizzard is connected to it.

I think I read somewhere that this would be based on an original storyline, and that the main characters would be original with famous characters from lore being mentioned, cameos, etc.

Buuuut, I can't remember where I read this so take it with a grain of salt   *^_^

Is this going to be an all CGI film?

I will watch it. I dont play warcraft and even when I did a long time ago I never really cared about the lore. But if done right of course it could be good.

@Thanatos2k Dammit!  You're not supposed to put the warning on the SAME LINE as the spoiler!

Why make this movie 5 years too late?  Why now when the game is basically in the nursing home, sent out to pasture?  You make this movie back in the day say BC or Wrath and you'd make 5x what you'd make now...
