War Thunder nets 3 million players

Gaijin Entertainment's free-to-play MMO game sees 200 percent player growth since March; PS4 version on display at Gamescom.

Gaijin Entertainment's free-to-play MMO game War Thunder has seen more than 3 million players for its open beta, the company announced today. That represents player growth of over 200 percent since March 2013.

The open beta for War Thunder began in late January. Since then, players have destroyed more than 1 billion units and logged over 30 million hours of play time, equivalent to more than 3,400 years.

Gaijin Entertainment also announced that the PlayStation 4 version of War Thunder--cross-compatible with the PC version--will be on display at Gamescom next month. The developer said it will make an announcement regarding the game's launch date at the show.

War Thunder is also in development for iOS and Android devices, though Gaijin Entertainment has not provided details regarding when these versions of the game will launch.

Gamers interested in trying out the title--compatible with Oculus Rift--can download the War Thunder open beta from the game's website today.

absolutely amazing game...takes the awesome Wings of Prey engine...ups the graphics, controls, and physics, and makes it a MP masterpiece...the south america map, with the mountains and hillsides with the shelves cultivated out of the land is a great map with tons of room to seek cover for slower planes...graphics are awesome but easy on the resources...controls are much more refined on flight sticks than W.O.P. but i wish there was more of a single player campaign since its so much better...any flight sim fan needs to play this

It seems alright but I have trouble flying with my joystick. I can't seem to calibrate it perfectly and it isn't clear how to start games or do solo missions.

Best Part is it's cross-compatible with PC and PS4. :)

It's a great game overall, better than World of Warplanes that's for sure, the addition of simulation and realistic mode is welcomed.

I've been playing it since open Beta, but once you hit level 9 in any research tree, I chose Soviet, it becomes a real grind. It will take me 1 or 2 months to get the Mig 15 at this rate.

This Oculus device is something I've been waiting for.  It will make for very interesting flight simulations.

War Thunder looks very interesting too, considering the excellent flight sims Gaijin makes ( except the awful arcade escort mission fest Apacche Air Assault )

Overall, the arcade mode will probably be very successful among console gamers. It's very easy (every sim aspect has been "streamlined" out of it) and there's little (if any) strategy in it. Just dive on isolated opponents, shoot them down and get back real fast to your side of the map. Rinse an repeat. Can be quite fun for a while, but it's also very shallow and has little lasting appeal.

However, if the devs let PC and PS4 gamers play together, the consolites will get butchered. They don't stand a chance vs mouse aim. So PS4 matches will probably be kept separate XD

So much for what they said about FF14, and free to play.

Man that looks sick. I've loved all the il2 series including the birds of prey/steel for the console. I was on the fence as to what next gen console to buy but this may have just put me on the ps4 bandwagon. Can't wait to see more details on this.

I for one think its a travesty that the PS4 is the only one getting this. This is all just stemming for the hatred for the Xbox One. Look what you stupid fan boys have done! Are you happy now? All your complaining has just ruined my hopes for having this game on the new Xbox.

Can't wait for their version of tanks. I can't stand War Gaming's World of Tanks any more. So much lag, gold slingers and bad match making.

War Thunders plane game is superior to War Gamings. So I'm not worried.

I'll be checking this out on PS4.

I wonder if all those F2P and Indie PC/PS4 games will come to Xbox One now that the policy has been changed or if they'll stick with Sony for believing in them from the start.

@milannoir  I can agree on mouse aim being very superior to stick aiming, (great for FPS games where you just walk forward, aim and shoot) but man is the keyboard cumbersome at maneuvering

Try playing an open world game like GTA or other action games where you're required to constantly move, jump, run, climb, steer, etc. in all directions.  Horrible.

In such games mouse and keys are a disadvantage and the elite mouse aimers get a good ass whooping.  Resumed, mouse and keys are overrated.  I play most PC games with my 360 pad.

@milannoir I might give one of those easier modes a shot. I used to get around to playing flight sims (Jane's WWII Fighters was one of my favorite) but I've never been good in multiplayer flight sims. There's some real pros out there and it can be absolutely brutal to jump into the mix with my lack of skills and my aging sidewinder.

@JohnnyGT1 Arcade mode, where you'll find over 85% of the player base, is fun but can't be labeled a real flighing game. It's closer to a FPS due to the fact that the planes basically fligh themselves, you just point and click to shoot down enemies. Historical battle mode is more realistic, but mouse aim ans instructor still make it very arcadish.

So for people who want an actual flight sim, Full Realistic Battle is the way to go. Unfortunately, that mode isn't getting much love by the devs (low priority for them), so there are quite a few annoying issues that failed to be adressed/ patched.

@JohnnyGT1 best ww2  plane sim/game well its not a total sim iff you play in arcade but you can play it as a total sim on fullreal battle mode

@holtrocks premium fighters do have their advantages, my germany BF109 can't win a head-on fight with premium russian i153

@somatzu Are you a troll or just stupid? This article has nothing to do with the Xbox one.... and by the way the PS4 should considered its self lucky for getting this game. Those buttholes at Sony don't deserve this game at all.

billlabowski

@wdma There's only room for one master race, and that title belongs to PC kid.

milannoir

@VR_Verdugo @milannoir Well if you try to compete in arcade battles with a sidewinder, the "pros" will not be the only ones shooting you down. Even a good pilote with a hotas Warthog will get owned by a noob with mouse aim. basically, in arcade mode with mouse aim, this game isn't about flying planes anymore, it's about clicking on a plane to shoot it down. The flying is done by the plane AI (what I mean is that you don't really control pitch/yaw/roll). So if you want a fun shooting game that happens to have planes in it, it's great. But if you want to feel like you're piloting something, it's not such a good game, except in FRB.

@TheAhti @Truth_Hurts_U yes hes wrong world of tanks has no problem with matchmaking the problem starts at the fucking stale shallow booring gameplay....
