War Thunder beta nets 5 million players

Open beta for Gaijin Entertainment's free-to-play MMO reaches milestone year after launch.

More than 5 million gamers have played the open beta for Gaijin Entertainment's free-to-play World War II-set MMO combat game War Thunder on PC since launch in November 2012, the developer has announced.

This is up from 3 million announced at the end of July.

War Thunder is currently in open beta on PC and its player base "continues exponential growth," Gaijin Entertainment said in a statement. The game is also in development for Mac, Oculus Rift, iOS, and Android. It will be a PlayStation 4 launch title on November 15.

The PS4 version of War Thunder will be cross-compatible with PC, allowing users on both platforms to play alongside or against one another. In addition, Gaijin Entertainment is readying an expansion pack called Ground Forces that will add land-based combat to the game.

Will they really let ps4 and pc cross platform play, dont think that they will prolly have ps servers. The game is great but I want new and better maps and a historical mode where you dont run out of ammo after 1 kill. Spent 100 euros on it. Dont think i get more kills than before but nice to support these developers.

Very fun game, I'm looking forward to it on PS4. But mouse aim is a very big reason for the PC game's popularity. It makes anyone able to easily fly a plane. I'm interested in seeing how they handle controls in the PS4 game.

Looking forward to tanks and naval ships.

I also highly recommend Gaijin's other F2P game, Star Conflict. I think it is much more better put together than War Thunder. More interesting gameplay too.

Would have been a more realistic trailer if every second plane got rammed by an enemy and the occasional friendly. :p

Bahaha hope the Son'ys have fun getting absolutely stomped by PC players who have been on the game for months already.  Game is ridiculously complex to play on a controller without super arcade control mode.

Was thinking about getting it and was wondering what the controls are like. Are they complex like Il-2:1946 or more arcade like like an Ace Combat game.

I've been playing since Dec/Jan.

Just bought 2 years of prem time for the price of 1. Love the game.

Wish they would get tanks out.

I've been playing the beta and even though some of the later plane costs are super ridiculous the game is super fun

@Grenadeh

You never know, they might add keyboard and mouse support to the PS4 version.

I would then play my PS4 over my PC... But it would be hard to play still, because I like sticking my face in my monitor. plus leaning forward makes me a better gamer lol.

You can make them easy "Mouse Aim" or extremely hard "Full Flight Controls".

Game is very customizable.

I like easy controls, so I stick with "Mouse Aim" with flight "instructor" off.

Also, arcade mode makes planes do stuff they wouldn't normally do. I like that mode. But they also have realistic modes to for the hard core players.
