Wanted: Phantasy Star Universe beta testers

Sega calls for Japanese PC gamers to help stress-test Sega's upcoming online RPG.

Sega has an open call for Japanese PC gamers to join a new beta test for the online PC and PlayStation 2 online role-playing game Phantasy Star Universe. The beta-test period will run until April 17, and testers will be asked to post their impressions in feedback forums.

It's no secret that game infrastructure has been an issue for Phantasy Star Universe. Sega has already postponed the launch date once due to stability problems with the game's online component. The beta test will include about 10,000 users, which should give Sega a good opportunity to stress-test the game and make sure the infrastructure is ready for prime time.

Sega has not specified a new launch date since it announced the delay from the initially planned March 30, but the company is still committed to a 2006 launch in Japan, and the game will retail for 6,800 yen ($57.75). The game is also tentatively scheduled for release in the US sometime this year.

I beta tested PSU on the PC it was a b**** getting the right config on my controller for it since I had to manually edit it login in and log out to test what key is what...lol. Well it was fun 3 1/2 week of beta testing 1 round pick too can't wait till it hit the U.S if you liked PSO then you deffinetly will like PSU and if you didn't like PSO well most likely I think you should give PSU a chance it's a whole new gameplay!

Because we all know how passionate the Japanese are about PC gaming, and how competitive the MMO^H^H^H instanced matching service market is in Japan.

"The series has never been too huge here at all, I've been into it since the Master System..." Not sure what you're smoking, but it sure must be good! I've been playing the PS series since the original Phantasy Star on the Sega Master System. When PS Online was released on the Dreamcast, it was EXTREMELY popular and everywhere you looked there were boards, tips, faqs, etc. Although it wasn't as popular when it shifted to the next gen consoles, PSO was the primary reason it was SO difficult to find a modem for the Gamecube. Everywhere was sold out, and the only game using it was PSO. PSO was one of the first pseudo MMOs for a home console and I look forward to seeing the next gen version once again.

FFXI is the only game I have ever regretted buying. Anyway, good news. Hopefully this means the game will be ready soon and all that will be needed is translation...

*cough* Will there be cards? Tried Blue Burst, no impressy. I really regret that PhanStar came to adopt the Final Fantasy "no relation" method of sequels after IV, rather than their own pioneering (and modernly branded as Suikoden) "threads of fate" historical continuity... now that PS branched far far away from the Algol system. Luuuuutz!! To the Retro-Machine!

What do you consider "massive"? Grouping with 5 people? 6 people maybe? LOL

PSO, is and never will be an MMO, grouping up with 4 people isn't exactly massive.

I can't wait for this one's release. I miss the old Megadrive Phatasy Star series. Cheers to return of the single player. Bonus with the online play. Not long here in Japan thanks god. For now I'll just play FFXII till then. Now just where is Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria.............

I wonder how many systems this will be ported too in the long run. A mmorpg on PS2 seems a bit short-lived with PS3 around the corner. Then again it is backward compatable but PSU is going to look old really fast.

Benihana7 I am with you I was wanting a Beta test also but I think that some time soon we will when it gets over here. I am a big fan of the Game it was a great game on the Dreamcast and think it still will be. Not sure if true but thought I heard that there would be this game on the PS3 But maybe not.

makes sense to test it there...tons of people still play PSO on their Dreamcast. And honestly, with a series like Phantasy Star, 80% of the players will be Asian anyways. The series has never been too huge here at all, I've been into it since the Master System. Oh, and PSO was one of the first MMORPGs out there with a huge following. Nothing new at all for this IP. In fact, It would be nice to see a one player Phantasy Star game...

I hope this doesn't turn out like Shenmue Online, staying in Asia only :(

at this point in the online gaming world, why is there no standard infrastructure of somekind for online gaming? I gues XNA is the right direction but there shouldnt be delays dues to "instability" of the online portion of any game. There should be standards for the PS2 and PC as well.

Everyone with a fantasy or sci-fi IP seems to be getting into the MMORPG realm. Evidently the barrier to entry isn't high enough to discourage competition.
