Walking Dead shooter aiming for Wii U

Activision confirms Survival Instincts game based on AMC TV show coming to Nintendo's new system in March using GamePad to manage inventory.

The Walking Dead: Survival Instincts is aiming for release on Wii U. Producer Glenn Gamble confirmed with Digital Spy that the zombie shooter is in development for Nintendo's first high-definition console, though it was not always in the cards.

"We were over halfway through the project when the Wii U thing started coming about," Gamble said. "We didn't want to change the game, because the game had already been established, so we tried to say, 'What can we augment with the Wii U version?'"

Gamble further explained that the Wii U GamePad will be used in Survival Instincts as a "more elegant" inventory management system.

"With the Wii U you have access to your backpack at all times, so you can tap what weapons you want, you can drop stuff," he said. "It's a lot more streamlined."

In addition to confirming a Wii U version of Survival Instincts, it was also announced today that the game will arrive on store shelves in the United Kingdom Friday, March 29. Games typically release the Tuesday before in the United States, meaning Survival Instincts is expected to arrive stateside on March 26.

Survival Instincts was announced in July 2012 and is based on AMC's The Walking Dead TV series. It will be set in rural Georgia and focus on brothers Daryl and Merle Dixon. Players will be able to choose whether to confront the undead head-on or attempt to avoid detection.

The game is also currently in development for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC (digital-only) at Terminal Reality. That studio's previous credits include Atari's Ghostbusters: The Video Game, as well as Majesco's BloodRayne and BloodRayne 2. The company's most recent release was Kinect Star Wars.

I wonder if Telltale Games is going to make a Wii U version of The Walking Dead Game.

I hope this game is going to be great on all platforms, but lets wait and see what will happen when it comes but a lot of these tie-in games are really not that great at all no matter what platform they are on.

It's great to see Wii U getting the third party support. But another port? It's really hard to get genuinely excited for this sht TBH.

Nintendo absolutely needs to pull finger and meet more dev's/ publishers halfway in terms marketing, distribution etc...

And create more, much needed incentives other than just, look at our new console and it's possibilities...

Fresh new IP's, built for the ground up, then after they receive critical acclaim, port them to current Gen, not the other way round...

activision is supporting the wiiU nicely :)

Really hope this game doesn't suck complete ass...

After playing ZombiU, I really want a sequel. Badly. It's completely spoiled me. Walking Dead is gonna have to be really something to pry me away from ZombiU.

How is this different than ZombiU? A FPS zombie game that uses the gamepad for inventory?  Hopefully it will be better.

Looks like this game is gonna have a hard time trying to match ZombiU. I'm having a blast with that game.

This sounds okay for a port, but I really hope Nintendo goes out of their way to create some inventive gameplay to go along with their new hardware. Just hoping the touchpad doesn't become the 'inventory/map/status screen' for every game (a bit like the 2nd screen on the DS) - they could do some really interesting stuff with their 1st party franchises if they put their minds to it.

It's not Nintendo, but I look at a game like Armored Core V and think - why isn't this on WiiU? Operator is using the gamepad to direct the battle from a tactical standpoint while a couple of his buddies went splitscreen / online mech sortieing. The potential for asymmetric multiplayer and cross-genre experimentation is enormous.

Well I was going to get this game on the Xbox360, but now I will get it on the Wii U. I have like 250 games on Xbox360 and only 4 on the Wii U, so I guess I need more on the Wii U that is when more good games like this The Walking Dead game comes out.

That zombie model is terrible, Left 4 Dead with Source engine which is several years old has way better human models. Need to see something more of this game, I hope it has good story...

This game is going to have to be something special to appeal to mature Wii U gamers after the treat that was Zombi U. I absolutely love that game.

I hope the graphics are better for Xbox 360. To me the graphics look outdated but is it open world?

Oh man, I can't wait for this title. I really liked ZombiU, (well, until the stupid carnival bit at the end), and would love for another zombie game for the Wii U. Let's hope this one does everything perfectly.

Since when is what game has better graphics how people measure relative quality? Last time I checked, Darkest of Days has better graphics than Deus Ex, but I'm pretty sure Deus Ex is a better game.

Activision making a shooter? I wonder if we will be treated to set pieces using mounted guns, and a vehicle or two flipping while you ride in it...

Why is everyone so worried about the graphics?

Graphics don't make a game great... gameplay does.

If a crowd of 100 zombies are chasing me, with shit on fire and a car exploding and I'm still getting above 60 fps, that's just gravy.

@Rinslowe_AE man its only less than 2 months old. You expect a new game can be done for the wii u in this short timeframe? usually dev's/publishers take a look first on how well the console is going, just like they did to ps vita before releasing their big guns. just give it some more time, im pretty sure it will get more support from the 3rd party

@kohle36

I agree 100%, but in defence of the current trend for gamepad "inventory/map/status screen" support, I think this is still a worthy inclusion to the experience and perfecting that only helps to make it another one of the Nintendo driven industry standards in future...

But for sure, fresh IP's are where the Wii U needs to go, Ports should be made downstream to current Gen, not the way it's being done now...

@bojan_sokol Yeah, not to mention how bad the image fuels trolls to compare it with the Wii U "thing".

It looks like a Dreamcast game -_-

kavadias1981

@emptycow Oh come on now, cow. You are actually using a multiplatform game to have a dig at Wii U now?

By all means criticize that which is an issue. Don't insult it just for the sake of it.

@Sgthombre Bouncer for PS2 looked better than almost any game in the PS2's 12 year life span...yet was arguably one of the worst games of all time.

Sling_Master

@mindpurge Except the Wii-U can't handle that many zombies on screen, or even around you, and you're sure as hell not going to stay at 60 FPS, thus inhibiting gameplay. No gravy for you.

kohle36
kohle36

@Rinslowe_AE For sure, not too many 3rd party devs are going to jump on board with WiiU exclusives using these features until Nintendo does it themselves. I'm just hoping they lead the charge properly. As it stands, a handheld 'inventory' is about the best you're going to be getting from multi-platform ports. They can't fundamentally redesign the gameplay for a port, but that's exactly what they need to be doing.

@alrepairs it looks as good as a z class $10 download thats all it really is a cash in feeding off the the fans of the show  and the successful of the point and click walking dead games   and this is the next wiiu game its a joke ps3 xbox 360 have this crap cash in and its ok the ps3 and xbox360 have many great games and all wiiu has is 1 % of the great games ps3 and xbox360 has  so yea this is just another crap game for the wiiu

@kavadias1981  "We were over halfway through the project when the Wii U thing started coming about,"  yea sounds like they are hard at work on that "wiiu thing "  this wont be anything mind blowinf it will be a cheap $10 game for xbox live and $60 on wiiu

@alrepairs ever played black on PS2? u should compare the graphics in total not the colors within the game :)

@Sling_Master @mindpurge What gives you this conclusion?

The CPU wasn't labeled worse than 360 or PS3...just not that much better than.

Lower clock speed doesn't mean worse CPU, lol.  Core I7 underclocked to 1.6 GHZ would obliterate a Quad Core 9650 @ 3.0 Ghz.

This isn't Defending Nintendo either.  Just dropping knowledge to you.

@emptycow @ghstbstr yea this is a next gen system.... lol i've never once been interested in this ever they need to stick to hand helds and make there core games for other systems

@ghstbstr @emptycow i like the walking dead point and click games but this walking dead game is going to be pure trash  this crap was announced in July 2012 ands its coming out in less then 3 months   wow  this is so going to be a halfass  cash in

ghstbstr
ghstbstr

@emptycow

The only people who use the term "cash in" are the ones that don't like the movie or the show that a game is made from. So go fork yourself. Haha.

I like alot of the games that made from movies or shows. They usually aren't as bad as people say, and those people are ones who usually don't play those types of games and have no life but to bash games like that.

@emptycow @kavadias1981 So the phrase "Wii U Thing" gave you the ultimatum to rant against this console versus the others?

You were probably one of those kids who play black ops at age 8.  I play against them all the time, and tell them how sad their futures will become...as they're losing in the game.

kohle36

@emptycow As much as I love me some button mashing catharsis, Omega Force's development cycle is pretty well established: generate a set of resources on a single game engine, then mash out as many sequential games, spinoffs, add-ons, and (more recently) dlc as possible. They pretty much make one game per gen, and then color it in 17 different variations over the next 6 years. So, forgive me if I'm not going to take their claim at face value - could be true yes, but more likely they just didn't want to put the work in and found 'technical limitations' to be a handy scapegoat

@Gurzociurlo @Sling_Master @mindpurge  read the facts dude sling master is right the wiiu cant pack more zombies on screen then a ps3 or xbox 360  its a fact given by the maker of dynasty warriors
