Walking Dead kicks off in April

First of five monthly installments in zombie series arriving late next month on Xbox Live and PSN for $5, available on PC/Mac with $25 season pass.

The first installment in Telltale Games' The Walking Dead episodic adventure series will arrive in late April, the developer announced today.

Telltale breathes new life into The Walking Dead next month.

The debut chapter of The Walking Dead will drop next month on Xbox Live for 400 MS points ($5) and the PlayStation Network for $5. The first of five episodes will also hit the PC and Mac in April via the Telltale online store and other outlets via a $25 season pass purchase.

Telltale did not say if episodes of The Walking Dead will be available for individual purchase on the PC and Mac, and as of press time, the developer had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment.

Telltale also today announced that those who preorder the PC and Mac version of The Walking Dead via the Telltale online store will save 10 percent on a season pass. Additionally, those who reserve a copy of the game will be entered into a sweepstakes to appear in the fourth episode of the game as a human, then a zombie.

Telltale's Walking Dead is a single-player episodic game based on Robert Kirkman's comic book series. It stars Lee Everett, a man convicted of a crime but given a chance to redeem himself, albeit in a world infested with undead.

Quality game can't wait for the next episode

Finished the first episode, very cool for what it is. If your wondering about the combat its point and click but still appropriate. The game is more choice making with puzzle solving. Good story so far kinda sucks you have to wait in between episodes with no idea when their coming.I give it an 8.5 its worth it.

A zombie game more aimed at story over combat it seems. All i seen are the released videos here on gamespot, so its difficult to tell if there will actualy be any combat outside of the straged story settings. I doub't there will be anything crazy for zombie killing.., the graphics art choice looks pretty cool. So probably no types of surival mode or wondering around outside of small story zones, all story. But still it looks like it will be a nice sit back and enjoy ... i guess rpg.

This game is set up for failure, how can you make a game with zombies and NOT make it co-op???

Looks great, i really wasn't sold on this game til i saw the gameplay trailer, it looks great, and i am pretty much sold on it, somethings bother me about it, but, maybe the videos i have seen are older builds, and the shown in the gameplay trailer is a newer build...

This has nothing to do with the tv series (which was awesome by the way!), just the comics?. probably the reason why they only made it for arcade. @pixeladdict yeah I read that too but dont believe everything IGN says, I dont. I'm at least going to rent it first, which looks wicked fun.

@bluefalcon21 you should check out project zomboid. Basically it is minecraft/sims/zombie survival, it is still in pre-alpha, but you can buy it for $8 and help test. Really addicting.

@blackace rickwongtc is right, and I read somewhere that season 3 will be 16 episodes, but I'm not sure if there will be a break in it.

I'll have to check it out. Hopefully it will be good. The show has been great, but the season is way to short. Only 8 episodes and then you have to wait another 10 months for Season 3.

I can't find no gameplay video for this game but i heard it was a click and go game which sounds lame.

@Toysoldier34 Frictional make a hell of a horror game, i know that much. First person is alright, i forgot to mention, in that way, but a FPS is different, the "S" stand for shooter after all. That much i agree, a Walking Dead by Frictional would be better than the book, comic and TV together. @hystavito Yup, the we can't forget the S that's there. Telltale can't make really exciting games, and even though i enjoyed the story of Puzzle Agent (even though a bit confusing) i could see that Telltale focus on the storytelling, so we can expect a good story from this game, although no chills... You're not that far off with your opinion of Telltale, but unlike most companies they only have condition of delivering a casual gameplay, it is their intention after all.

hystavito

@Raxyman one advantage of first person for a zombie game would be the realism of not being able to see behind you. I guess you are emphasizing the SHOOTER part of FPS, yes I agree an arcade action shooter isn't what I'd want either. However, these point & click games aren't what I want either. They are generally shallow, simple gameplay, and like I said earlier just targeted at getting some casual gamers to buy them based on the franchise they are using. Maybe I'm wrong but that's what I think of when I think of Telltale.

Toysoldier34
Toysoldier34

@Raxyman The Penumbra and Amnesia games do a good first person job of representing horror. Their play styles would have fit The Walking Dead pretty good. Giving the player the tools he needs, but not enough to do it easily. Making it smarter to choose not to fight due to the lack of ability. That would have represented the comics good, because no combat or all combat don't represent the series. There is a smooth blend between fleeing and running to dear life and being backed into a corner and lashing out to defend their own life. The characters don't seek the walkers to kill but avoid them and do what they must. I hope they are able to revisit the series in this manor also. Taking heavy story elements from the likes of Mass Effect's style and the helplessness Penumbra offers.

Would like to see some more gameplay...this trailer was just an exploitation of the Walking Dead brand. My best hope is that the game will be like Dead Space (1 and 2 are awsome) but I'm pretty sure it won't....

@Toysoldier34 Seems to be a truth for every game nowadays that involves gun XD. @Agent-M Point and click might not be the best choice for a survival horror. But a FPS isn't either, because then it'll lose all the fear and tension. Going all out shooting isn't a recipe for horror. What i think it should be made, is a game like Mirrors Edge (running and climbing) without focus on combat. Or maybe some platformer-like, adventure game. Either way it needs to be something new and escape from the comfort zone. Point and click might be dull, but FPS might ruin for good the experience...

Still waiting for a mashup of Terraria/Minecraft with a survival/zombie plot in 3rd person view.

I am glad they didn't ruin Walking Dead by making it a CoD clone.

I love the series, but god do I hate point and click. The Walking Dead deserves to made into a survival horror fps game, not a point a click.

RogueSonic

Saw the gameplay....looks alright. I mean, considering the fact that Walkers are attracted to gunshots, I wouldn't imagine that the game is all about killing them. However, the fact that it's a point and click makes me more than a little pissed. Back to the Future was fine as a point and click, but for something like this, you should be able to roam around freely. It is mostly about exploration, after all. Might be wasting my money here, but I think I might pick this up. It has almost nothing to do with the show or the comic, but if you're familiar with the comic or the show, a game copying that would probably be too easy.

@strayfies I disagree about the show. For me it's as good as the first season. I know, it had some boring episodes, but the last episodes were really great. But I don't expect much from this game.

I love the comics but the show went downhill and I can't tell what this game is supposed to even be like. Won't be dropping any money on a game this vaguely promoted. Even more wary of "Season Passes" lately. What I've found is that when devs are locked into a sure thing, they only have incentive to make the earlier / demo parts good. Then they can cruise on the rest of that contract till the next deal comes around.

@ "da_chub" Heavy Rain was impossible to finish in "3 hours". 7 hours minimum on first playthrough, and there's a ton of replay with the branching scenarios. Guaranteed this latest fail-to-be from Telltale will be less than 6 hours gameplay total with no branching elements or replay incentives. Keep on living in your hypocrisy though if it makes you feel better.

Doesn't look exciting. No gameplay footage at all. So sick of trailers like this.

I really want this to be good...but am still pretty skeptical given Telltale's recent doings...one good thing is since it's on XBLA that means there will definitely be a trial version...and if that's good, they've got my money.

TellTale have been pretty hit or miss lately. The Back to the Future games started with promise but got super boring as they went on and Jurassic Park looked terrible from the start. This, on the other hand, looks really great. If they can live up to that promise of making everything about choices then this could be one really great zombie game.

da_chub

u know...games like heavy rain sell for $60 day 1. They are not worth it. 3 hours and no replay. However...i just watched a 10+ min gameplay video of this on youtube and im getting it day 1. $25 for probably 10+ hours is def well worth it.

@Zacmaccraken Telltale gets these titles because Telltale makes them the way they are meant to be. The purpose of their games are to snag some casual gamers (I get tired of that term sometimes but it gets the point across) that are fans of the whatever franchise/name/brand it is. It sucks because some of them could have been interesting games for more serious gamers, who are also fans. But, I'm gonna guess the Telltale way is less risky so the people that own the rights prefer to just make a quick buck and not take chances. It's funny, in the Walking Dead case I feel like it's one of those victim of its own success kinda stories. The TV series is getting getting popular and going mainstream so to speak, but then again if it wasn't a Telltale game there probably wouldn't be any game at all.

I say take a PASS. Pass pass pass pass pass. Let's go over this... 5 games, 5 parts, an excuse to charge $5 more than similar titles on XBL. Wasn't their last game Jurassic Park? Wasn't that... just bad? Didn't a couple of the guys who made it write reviews online and try to pass them off as consumer reviews? Wasn't there supposed to be a GAMEPLAY trailer on IGN today which turned out to only include a couple cut scenes rendered with the game's engine? Didn't the gameplay linked in that one comment on here look slow and boring and more suited to a PC game from 1993? Why couldn't this have been a $60 RPG from someone besides Bethesda or Bioware...
