Virtua Tennis 3 demo lobbed onto XBL

Sega's tennis game causes a racket on Xbox Live Marketplace as 849MB demo is served up.

Spring has sprung, so it's time for gamers to hone their skills in outdoor activities...from the convenience of their couches. To help bleary-eyed gamers prepare for sunshine and fresh air, Sega has released a demo for its upcoming tennis game, Virtua Tennis 3, over Xbox Live Marketplace.

Sega claims the full retail version of Virtua Tennis 3 will support native 1080p resolution. The game will also feature several pro tennis players, including Roger Federer, Amelie Mauresmo, Maria Sharapova, and more. Gamers can also test their play in a series of minigames and a multiplayer mode.

Virtua Tennis 3 is rated E for Everyone and will hit stores later this month on the Xbox 360. The game is also scheduled to appear on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, and PC. For more information, read GameSpot's previous coverage.

I love the demo. With a bit of practice you can beat all available characters, and it's great fun. It took me an hour or two to start winning most games. Moving and positioning your character is as important as hitting the ball. Not to mention winding up the return. Btw you did notice that you can change the camera angle right? Edit: oh and another btw. The ladies don't dive for balls, in case you dislike that feature.

Looks good put the gameplay isn't that great. Top Spin2 is better imo

Game doesn't look that great if you ask me, wasn't that impressed. I wish they would have took that behind the player camera angle thats in Top Spin, angle in the game just doesn't make the game look that great.

again, watch the video, when you get decent at the game you won't dive.

It's pretty annoying how your character dives for almost every shot.

I was disapointed as well. I loved the dreamcast vt games but this one just felt meh to me.

This is a pretty cool game. Very easy to control like Table Tennis.

WOW! How the mighty have fallen! The two VT games on DC and the one on PSP were in my top 5 of all time along with the Firepro Wrestling games, Thunderforce series, arcade Ms. Pac Man, and the Virtua Fighter series. Even after playing through both Top Spin games I still championed VT as the better game mostly b/c of VTs being the originator. Topspin really stole the control scheme from VF and added the power shot, spins, etc. But after playing this demo I am sad to say I will definitely NOT be making the purchase, and I kind of think TopSpin II in retrospect actually is a superior game. The control is all screwed up. Your charater dives almost every rally, the movement is slightly different then the original VF which may account for this. VF was always the more arcade tennis game but now it is just ridiculous. Add to this a CPU opponent on the demo that is harder than the last match in the original World Tour modes (again maybe b/c the control is bad) and you have one frustratingly bad demo. looks pretty, plays poop. I'm going to go start a new character in TopSpin II..... I can't beleive I just said that. :0(

awesome! never hurts to have a sports demo rather than whining about not having the actual game, score for me

Super next-gen graphics with 1080p HD and superb game play. This is the tennis game I might play (As long as there's Kournakova or Sharapova).

Color me impressed. I was expecting the same old VT I have on my DC. This game has an updated feel and look. I may actually end up picking this one up. Good job Sega. Also if you haven't played VT before it takes some time to get used to the way the game controls. Prepping your shots and holding the button before the ball gets to you dictates how much control you have on the ball. Also if you hate the butt rock (music) use your custom soundtracks, that's what their there for.

i can see how it would be not fun if you suck, but no way can you say those graphics are bad, they're amazing, and so is the gameplay.

Damn, this series has gone down the drain. Bad animations that are repeated over and over, ugly character models and overall graphics and just not fun to play. Also, terrible music.

alright iplayed 15 games and i won one. its realy weird because they dont go out at the side's as in topspin, but always at the back. i dont really know when its out or in, because if you play a topspin or riskshot,, if the other player hits it hard, it's out. thats really new and weird. but, maybe this is the next gen...

they fall down WAY too much. I liked the original more, this one's just not...the same.

i downloaded it, its really hard because i'm into topspin 2, and thats way less realistic then this game, t players really fall down and stuff and they are expecting you to hit towards a side, its really hard to get in the game, but if your in it, its a really good game.

All in all, be patient and enjoy the game little by little and bit by bit. Compared with TP2,this game is already much easier to handle. practice makes easier!

They made a mistake by releasing this demo. It's not what i expected, It does not play at all like the past VT's. Don't get me wrong i love the series. Just not this one, Changed my mind about picking this one up. Ex. Music sucks, it just kills the game. 80% of the time your character is jumping for the ball. The game is just no fun. Believe me i tried to like this game. Save your money for something better. Very very disappointed i was looking forward to this, Damn you Sega for not sticking with the same formula that has been working for all your past VT games. 1080P is nothing to brag about if your game sucks @ss :-(

What's with this 1080p misinformation. Yes, component cable does indeed support full 1080p if you have a TV or projector in my case that can accept it, you don't need VGA. And yes, 1080p makes little difference visually. Devices can fully support 1080p without HDMI, as the 360 does. It's just not a pure digital connection. Which, also makes little difference it you have a good display. The only reason component doesn't support 1080p for movies is because of copy protection, games can fully support it because they don't use HDCP.

good demo, bit hard though. I like that though, VT was always too easy.

all you guys complaining about the difficulty...get used to it. it is REALLY simple once you "get it". at first i couldn't even get a point but just 1 minute ago, I beat Federer playing as Sharapova in straight sets in 2 min 37 sec and didn't give Federer a single point. just keep playing and you'll just "get it". don't rush up to the net a lot and don't attempt to hit the ball when it is a fair distance away a lot cause it will end up in a lot of dives and easy points for your opponent. get into position as fast as you can before hitting the ball and anticipate to your best ability. hope this helps. i am definitely getting this when it releases. see ya online.

You guys must really SUCK. Leave this game for the Virtua Tennis Fans. This game actually takes skills. Coming from someone who has played and loved the PS2 and PSP VT Games, I was able to instantly pickup the controls and win 2nd match after loosing serve. I'll admit the demo seems to be set on HARD setting. Not sure why SEGA decided to that because it instantly alienates all the n00bs that cry after they can't win instead of learning the game. But anyway I'll be buying this game for sure. Maybe you guys shouldnt buy the game then you would have to face me online and if you thought the computer AI was HARD....

I plan on downloading the demo tomorrow.

Just for the record ... 1080p does not work over the component cable for the X360. Some TVs will support a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080 using a VGA cable, but a component cable at 1080i still looks the best.

@zeecorner You ID**TIC , MOR*NIC Sony fanboy VGA can output 2560×2048 easily and higher http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_resolution For X360: 1080p for games is available over COMPONENT and VGA. 1080p for upconverting DVD's is only available over VGA. VGA: HD DVD - 1080p resolution and all others DVD - Upscaled as high as 1080p resolution and all others Games - 720p games upscaled to 1080p, also supports native-1080p games in the future Component: HD DVD - 1080i resolution maximum, limited by AACS DVD - Upscaled to 480p maximum, limited by CSS Games - 720p games upscaled to 1080p, also supports native-1080p games in the future

I'm not trying to be offensive to anyone, I mean, being a noob is a temporary state lol. I'm just saying, when you play the game a bit, and learn the mechanics, it's awesome.

No offense but they could have at least lowered the difficulty setting. I'm lucky if I can win one volley, but of course I'm still trying to get the hang of the finer details when hitting the ball.
