Virtua Fighter 5 goes gold

Xbox 360 edition of Sega fighter ready to bring the franchise online at the end of the month.

While Virtua Fighter was one of the very first 3D fighting games when it debuted in 1993, it has been one of the last big brawling series to take the plunge into online gaming. The long wait for Virtua fans is almost over, as today Sega announced that the game has gone gold, and is on track to meet its October 30 launch date.

Originally released earlier this year on the PlayStation 3, Virtua Fighter 5 features 17 fighters--two of them new to the series--as well as the ability to customize characters with new items purchased with in-game prize money. In addition to online play, the Xbox 360 version of the game features leaderboards and the ability to download matches from the top fighters so would-be contenders can study their fighting styles. Players will also be able to purchase downloadable Virtua Fighter 5 content through the Xbox Live Marketplace.

@fc1969 Sorry little $ony fanrat!!! We get TEKKEN 6!!!!

I think that arc_salvo must be mistaken about the launching of tekken 6 in Xbox 360 because tekken is a exclusive of Sony consoles since 1995 and isn't now that goes to be changed. The hardware o sony consoles has been ever compatible with the arcade hardware of Namco and this game it is only exclusive of Playstation 3. you have Dead or Alive exclusive.

School is in and the subject is 3D fighting games. Most fighting games have their own area of expertise. Virtual Fighter is a Technical Fighting game, requires A LOT of skill to learn and YEARS to master. VF requires to really choose one character and master it. Dead Or Alive is a Counter-Heavy Fighting game, requires the player to master the art of thinking where your opponent will strike and then countering. DoA does require you to master the counters, but it is more button masher friendly than VF. Tekken is a mixture of both aforementioned games, requiring you to at least learn the basics before you can really have fun. I only enjoyed Tekken 3 and then stopped. SoulCalibur is a different beast altogether, especially compared to the other fighting games. No, its not because it is a weapon fighter, but brings so many elements to the table that it is hard and easy at the same time. SC is extremely button masher friendly, but players who master the fighting system can easily beat any B.M. My fighting game of choice is Virtual Fighter, since the depth of each character is simply amazing. Very close behind is, SC since it is vastly different than VF and because it is extremely fun to pick up and play. Put it this way, if you want a faster, slightly easier fighting game, go with DoA. If you want a game that will reward years of dedication, VF. If you want a good game to pop in and kick your friends butts, SC is the perfect game. As for Tekken, it is up to you.

"Sorry, no. In Tekken 2 characters like Nina had counters" While that's true, I think Tobal No 2 started the counter trend (at least it was the first game to do it well.

@ GeigerdolylWodd - "DOA introduced counters to 3d fighting games, that is a fact" - Sorry, no. In Tekken 2 characters like Nina had counters, Tekken 2 came out in arcades in 1995, and DOA came out in 1996. The difference was that in DOA all characters had counters, and counters are more important in DOA (too much IMO, in DOA2 the counter windows are so large you can switch your brain off and counter too easily, once you are familiar with the game). And yes you can button mash in any fighter, but don't expect to beat good VF, Tekken or Street fighter players like that. What is common though, is people that think they are good find out they really are not, when they can't beat some slap happy noob down at the arcades or something. For example in Tekken 5 every character has guaranteed damage or combos off a low parry, do you think everyone that plays Tekken and thinks they are good knows that? Nope. (edit) If you are looking for counters in the VF5 movelist, check out Aoi, she is the reversal queen and has been since VF3.

The truth of the matter is everyone is biased towards their own favorite fighting series but you can button mash in just about any given fighting game especially in games like Virtua Fighter and pull of interesting moves and win a match due to sheer tenacity without skill. Don't believe me? try playing your beloved series (which ever it may be) against a kid who constantly jumps and punches or jumps and kicks all through out the entire match. 8 times out of 10 I'm betting the kid will win without even trying...Atleast DOA tries to address those button mashers.

let's specify one thing here a lot of gamers seem to be confused about this. Virtua fighter did not have counters initially but it was revolutionary in that it introduced true 3d fighting. That's a fact ,alright? But DOA introduced counters to 3D fighting games, that is a fact too.

VF was blocky as heck when it first came out but I still liked it cause it was different there was a ninja character I'd pick and you could actually lose his head band and his face mask I know this might sound nerdy but at the time this was a big deal to me the attention to detail despite the fact that it was blocky is what enticed me to play VF.

flash forward to VF 2 the graphics were improved and they had some competition. To be honest with you I didn't really notice much in the way of a difference between the graphics in VF2 and its subsequent seqeuls. VF1 vs VF2 are different as night and day though graphicswise.

I guess I notice a difference in the graphics now? But that's a lot of sequels. But like I said Dead or Alive is what introduced counters and reversals to 3D fighting not VF although even in the first VF they did have holds and throws you could do just not counters and reversals. If there are any they came later. Funny thing is going through the VF 5 moves list I didn't see any listed

The graphics are defintely better on the 360. It looks cleaner, has less jagged lines, and runs smoother. The PS3, on the other hand, is less detailed and looks dull.

Well "Power Stone", did that whole brawling in destructible enviroments but Power Stone wasn't too great, I mean I enjoyed it but I might have been one of the few kids who actually bought a Dreamcast when they came out. And how dare you skip the "Orange Box" even if its just for "now"! It's an amazing buy 5 games 60 bucks (55 if preordered). I want Assassins Creed just like any other gumbo, but I wouldnt skip out on OB for nothing!

I agree with Sam_Lowery. As much as I like seeing VF5 on the 360 (and with online play to boot!) I really wish Namco would change their minds about Tekken 6, and put it on the 360 as well as Soul Calibur 4.

TheoleDominion1
TheoleDominion1

I love VF5, I only wish the character animation was smoother. I hate the awkward "robotic jerky" movement they display. I prefer the fluidity found in the Soul Calibur series, it looks more realistic to me. But I'm happy it's coming out.

Agermemnon
Agermemnon

I just wish they could improve the contact animation more in 3D fighters , and make more use of the 3D element , most bouts take place out in the open ? but how about inside a room full of destructible and usable objects ( DOA came close but not that close IMO ) this genre needs serious work to keep going for me because it's not evolved enough over the course of time .

dragonseer439
dragonseer439

@Jebril - " yeah DOA 4 is the most hardcore fighter on the market" - you don't know much do you? Both VF and Tekken have a hardcore tournament scene, especially in Japan and Korea, you can play these games for years and get better all the time. DOA doesn't have this same level of depth or strategy within it's gameplay, only the boob physics are hardcore..

To think the Master System held on so long in Brazil, it even was able to get a Virtua Fighter spinoff of some kind...

Yea, I'll play Virtua Fighter, but I'll be thinking of Tekken the whole time. I can only hope that when Soul Calibur 4 comes out, it sells so many more copies on 360 than ps3 that Namco can't pass up the money making opportunity and has to cave and give us T6

Dont get me wrong i have VF5 for PS3, but i cant use Xbox D pad to play fighting games. Its horrible

dingdongdanman

for everyone who says DOA is better. it may be a better game coz its a faster pasted game but for a game that is more true to martial arts nothing comes close to the VF series. DOA u just push as the buttons as you like, VF you have to think about every move. But i still have to say roll on soul calibur 4 but i doubt it be as good as the Dreamcast release.

Absolutezerr

Jebril, nothing about DOA gameplay is hardcore. So much of it is just button mashing.

DOA is better but I have to disagree with you when you say VF sucks, I mean considering how DOA is based off VF and all. But yeah DOA 4 is the most hardcore fighter on the market, if you don't understand than your still playing Tekken 5.

mykel77
mykel77

almost here!! cant wait and to some of you who complain about only 17 fighters, the reason for this is because it will take you a LONG time to truly master one fighter, the move list, counters, parries is HUGE and the deepest of any fighter to date. sure other games have tons more, but they are easy to master. VF is a real fighting simulator, its not a button masher but a deep artistic hardcore fighting game that doesnt mess around. If your hardcore into fighting games, check this out.

Among all the GREAT games coming out from now until the end of the year, I don't think this one made my list of "must haves". I can wait for it, especially since it is one of the last games to take the online plunge, I hope all this time was spent on making this game run as smooth as possible while online. 17 fighters only? In a world where game have 50+ selectable characters, this seems a bit scarce. Even Smash Bros on the gamecube has 25. Like I said, I can wait for the scores or the word of mouth until then, Orange Box, Rock Band, Rayman 2, here I come!

This is one of only two games I have for my PS3 - but the lure of online play with the 360 version has me mighty tempted! It seems strange that sega said that online couldnt be done with this game when it was on ps3?

Achievements and online play will make this one heck of a good game.

Fighting games are dieing a slow repetative death. Not my bag baby. O well. I hope the online is as lag free as possible for all the fighter fans out there that plan on getting it. Any lag is too much lag for fighters from what I understand.

I didn't want this game when it came out for the PS3, I don't want it now for the X360, but maybe I'll wait until it's a $20 platinum hit.

sold my PS3 as soon as this was announced. Grabbing it the day it's out on 360. It was the best game I played on PS3 and should be even better with online play and the other added features on 360.

I'd be very upset if I'm a PS3 owner, yes the game was released on PS3 first, but has Sega added online play for PS3 version yet? if not I'd be very mad that the other console has it now but not the PS3.
