Last week, the ears of the Scandinavian gaming diaspora perked up when a PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game called Viking: Battle for Asgard appeared on online retailer GameStop. The game's product page indicated Sega as its publisher, but offered no further details in the few hours before it was taken down. However, the reference to the mythical realm of Asgard sparked speculation that the game might do for the Norse pantheon what God of War did for Greek mythology.
As it turns out, that speculation was prescient. Today at the Leipzig Games Convention, Sega officially announced Viking: Battle for Asgard, a game that the publisher claims will let gamers "experience for the first time ever the brutal yet spectacular world of the Vikings and their all-powerful gods." Like God of War, it will feature a "powerful yet flawed warrior" protagonist who battles newly imagined incarnations of ancient deities. In this case, he must stop the death goddess Hel's demonic armies from overrunning Midgard (aka Earth) and starting Ragnarok, the cataclysmic final confrontation between the Aesir (Odin, Thor, and so on) and the forces of evil.
Viking will be the first next-generation console title from The Creative Assembly, developer of the acclaimed Total War real-time strategy series for the PC. To date, the West Sussex, UK-headquartered developer's only console game has been 2005's Spartan: Total Warrior for the Xbox, GameCube, and PlayStation 2. However, the shop has previously made Norse-themed games in the form of the 2003 Medieval: Total War--Viking Invasion expansion pack.
Viking: Battle for Asgard is set for a simultaneous release on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 next spring, and has not yet been priced or rated.
Sounds fun, but when even the creators are saying its based off of GOW I don't think its the sort of innovation they should see. The story sounds exactly like GoW just a new setting, same character. I was hoping for a Total War viking game when I read this; instead I got a major commercial game throwing off a great and original game.
sorry computer problems
NOTHING LIKE IT
IT IS NOTHING LIKE ANY TOTAL WAR
awesome game i have it It hasplenty of large scale battle. Your a viking who must lead his army against hes currently winning legion.NEVER EVER charge headlong into a large group you Will be killed when sneaking if a horn blower sees you while your alone run like helz but when you beat the game it so pucking boring it is a pretty gruesome game and the battles have hundreds of soldiers and runs pretty smoothly for all these soldiers
Can´t some developer just make a game with some sort of realism like vikings raiding frankish and saxon peasants and churches. :D + perhaps a part with discovering "new lands" or/and else becoming mercenaries (e.g byzatian guards). :)
Eh just another game form them that is boring like allways
this game looks good just hope it has good gameplay
i wish it would be a xbox 360 exclusive!
I hope this game isn't like "spartan total warrior" that game sucked!

well it will be really cool to have a norse god of war. i really liked the greek one but i always like the norse mythology better.
hmmmm this should be really intresting. I am definatly going to pick this game up. Also I loved the Spartan Total Warrior game.
Spartan: Total Warrior was a great piece of hack n' slash...with its technology, this game's definitely gonna be a treat
Awesome! Looks like this game is in brutal competiton against GOW. hopefully, this is not the final version of what the "main" warrior looks like that I've seen in the images, because he looks like a "newbie."
Viking mith is a lot more brutal than greek and something like this is what I was thinking that the creators of god of war would make. But becus its not it wont be the same game with a difant seting :)
Its a nother spartan total war stile hack and slash but with new looks to it. And dredwulf I do rember that game rune
Awesome anyone remember the Viking Game Rune? Also all we need is a soundtrack by Immortal, Graveland, and Summoning and then you'll truly have an epic black metal viking feel.
come on .... no pc version come on ..... were is killing .....come on VIking games is killing bloody games ....i love it
hopefully tis game will be as good as God of War, there aren't to many good viking games, and there aren't to many viking games to begin with
p.s. Black / viking /death metal all rule!!!!! \m/
yea this looks cool
about time Norse mythology got its due ,theres very few games based on it,I hope this game delivers. I'm very interested in it now that I seen it.
I love the mythological tie in games! :D
Do not argue with Gasolineh, his history is accurate. As far as Moonsorrow goes, they aware that thier music is "classified" as Viking Metal-a "subgenre of Black Metal." Though I have never heard or read of them having distaste towards the labeling, they seemingly embrace it as one of the most critically acclaimed Viking Metal bands out right now. But as far as this game goes...it's a keeper.
Nice! nordic myth is a subject sorely lacking in tosay's games. im sure we are all sick of greece by now arent we?
The Sames and the Finns are both finno-ugric. tho Sweden launched one or two crusades against the finno-ugrics that had settled and became farmers. the Sames was was left alone till Sweden and norway expanded north. But Sames do have more of a mongolian look to them. atleast those who are still real Sames since Sweden sterilized most of the Same popluation. so most Sames look Swedish or Finnish. The chance of seing metal in game even if its gorey as hell is still slim tho =(
Gasolineh - 1. Bands often lie about their apparent musical style. Only the Sami people were/are prominent reindeer farmers as far as I'm aware. 2. When I said fiction I referred to the literary fiction.
"1 - Moonsorrow's lyrics are mostly about Vikings and Viking mythology (and can even be classified under the Viking Metal label - a Black Metal sub-genre), hence the appropriateness. 2 - Artistic licence comes into play with most games based in past times. And no, because a game is set in the past, it does not make it an historical game...much like much fiction deals with a story rather than focussing on historical accuracy - all that's being utilised is a romanticised idea of the setting." 1 i though moonsorrow was pagan metal or something like that. and they do not want to be called a viking metal band. fins arent vikings in anyway, they are a finno-ugric people, deer farmers :P 2 fiction? so if i make a game about the american civil war, i give them laser rifles in my game =) why even call it medieval total war? if its fiction then they made up it all by them self or took someones elses ficition/religion same **** different name ;) but maybe the medieval age is just fiction :P its not like they made the game unhistorical un purpose . are there dragons in m2tw? no? black knights or fat sergeants call Argyle?
Man, it sounds awesome, but when on earth will I have time to play it? I'm gettin' back-logged by all the releases!
"why would they add a finnish band in game about vikings? infact i think we will never see a game with any good music Melo Death Viking Metal isnt exactly mainstream. and obviously if you are making a game about something that has happend in the past you are trying to make a historical game" 1 - Moonsorrow's lyrics are mostly about Vikings and Viking mythology (and can even be classified under the Viking Metal label - a Black Metal sub-genre), hence the appropriateness. 2 - Artistic licence comes into play with most games based in past times. And no, because a game is set in the past, it does not make it an historical game...much like much fiction deals with a story rather than focussing on historical accuracy - all that's being utilised is a romanticised idea of the setting.
hell yeah, some norse mythology. always been a fan of it, and hopefully this one doesnt disappoint.
Norse Mythology FTW!
ratboys got pwned.
American Gods...the video game!
i still want my god of war on PS3!!!!
This game looks pretty sick, and Vikings are the ish
Have you noticed that games are being thought of and made at an incredible speed... "Vikings...blah blah blah". Who knows the next game will be "THING: Attack of the Space-thingamajiggers". Games are just flying at us...Btw it seems like a cool game!!
