Vigil Games cofounder leaves

Cofounder and creative director Joe Madureira departs THQ-owned Darksiders studio after seven years to "move on to new adventures."

If a third Darksiders is made, it will be done so without Vigil Games cofounder and creative director Joe Madureira. The developer announced recently that he is parting ways with the Austin, Texas-based developer after seven years and two games: the original Darksiders and its sequel.

If THQ keeps Death running, Madureira won't be at the helm.

"I'm afraid the time has come for me to move on to new adventures," he said in an update to his Facebook page. "I could not be more proud of what we achieved, or the awesome people who helped build up this studio. I can safely say Vigil's future is in very good hands, so expect only awesomeness down the road. This feels surreal…I miss the place already."

Madureira said he will talk in detail about his next endeavor in the coming months. However, in the short term, he said he is focusing on "banging out a bunch of comics," but did not elaborate on this.

Madureira founded Vigil Games in 2005 alongside David Adams, Marvin Donald, and Ryan Stefanelli. The company was acquired by THQ in 2006 for an undisclosed sum. Prior to creating Vigil Games, Madureira spent 20 years at comic book company Marvel, where he worked on the Deadpool, Uncanny X-Men, Ultimates, and Avenging Spider-Man franchises.

Vigil Games' most recent project was this summer's well-received Darksiders II. It released in August and was the month's best-selling title in the United States. No future projects for Vigil Games have been announced.

Darksiders II will be a launch title for the Wii U in North America on November 18.

I hope him and Todd McFarlane continue to make video games! Video games should be where they use everything they know and love about creating comic books and turn it into an interactive thing we call video games!

IMO best artist in the known world. Don't really care what he does, as long as he keeps drawing.

Back in the day Comic books ruled everything I'm glad Joe Mad made these two Dynamic games even though I only played the first. Comic artists are not a dying breed by any means but comics kinda are.

At least unlike everyone else who is leaving, he isn't saying he's burnt out.

y do we need some statement in quotes every time a gaming exec leaves or joins a company???????

"move on to new adventures".......EVERYBODY makes career choices and moves from an old job to a new one.....do you make quote signs every time you tell someone the reason why you left your current job......

Design director at Gears of War studio leaves company after 20 years to "chart the next stage of his career" thats from the news item Cliff leaving Epic.....

well guess this is it.. we had e good run.. DS1 and 2 were pretty good... but now its done.

guess we will have to wait like 10 years for them to realize it was a mistake to drop the franshise. Then they will make DS3.. and guess what? will be more of the same.. and it wont fell as good as if it was made a couple of years after DS2 but will still be ok... not great.

Sounds familiar?

Joe Mad was one of the first artists on Avenging Spider man, and then did the ultimates 3 in like 2006 so... maybe his work with marvel is over and he is moving on to DC or Image?

Joe Mad was a fantastic Comic Book artist, I have quite a few issues when he first started.

What he meant to say was "THQ is going down, and I'm not going with it"

Life goes on I might not even login to this site after I type this ever again so goodbye in advance to you all.

I have been a fan of Joe MAd since his comic book days. Darkersiders caught my interest once I realized he was involved (and it turned out to be one of my most favorite games).

I wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors. Whatever it is, I am sure it will be amazing.

@HonorOfGod One developer leaves a gaming company and that's the end of good video games? Weird.

@jonasas2 With the way DSII sold, a sequel is unlikely to come to fruition. Which is unfortunate.
