Valve TMs 'DOTA'

Half-Life creator files trademark application for abbreviated title of hit Warcraft III strategy mod, Defense of the Ancients.

Blizzard Entertainment's Warcraft III remains a staple in international gaming competitions, but the game has also seen continued life more than eight years after release thanks to the popular strategy mod Defense of the Ancients. And while the creators of that mod have since gone on to release League of Legends, it would appear as if Half-Life studio Valve will be breathing new life into the one-off title.

What form DOTA will take remains a mystery.

As spotted by Internet sleuthing site Superannuation, Valve submitted a trademark application for the phrase "DOTA" on August 6, a filing that surfaced in the US Patent and Trademark Office's online database yesterday. As is customary of filings of this ilk, Valve's application carried descriptors ranging from "computer game software" to "electronic game software."

The filing follows on from a Twitter update posted by Duke Nukem voice actor John St. John, who said last week that he had recently lent his talents to the title. "Had a great time in Seattle last week recording for DotA. The guys at Valve Software are awesome," St. John said in his post, which was captured by UK gaming news site CVG before being deleted.

DOTA is a competitive tower defense-style game in which a continuous stream of minions floods toward opposing sides' bases. Players are given control of a unique hero character with special abilities to aid the minions in their task. The hero characters are also able to acquire items and level up to gain new skills as the game progresses.

Valve had not responded to GameSpot's requests for comment on either the trademark application or Twitter update as of press time.

And a company can't patent just the "name".. Patents are mainly for innovating something (technology, methods, etc).

I don't think a company can patent gameplay. :)

offtopic. RTS-RPG is the best genre to fit DotA/LoL/HoN??? :| if valve's gonna patent DotA, it should only patent the "name". NOT THE GAMEPLAY. the RTS-RPG idea should be no ones ownership

@SHARPSHOOTER25: Correction: Going to be tough to beat HoN.

@samirato Personally i really like LoL's graphics style and I don't see why some people have a problem with it. A G-man hero would be pretty epic tho

What's up with nobody giving due credit to HoN? It's a 90% carbon copy to DOTA, adding on it with a few new heroes, few new items and hundreds of interface improvements...

@SHARPSHOOTER25 are you serious man!? LoL never managed to beat DOTA, it doesn't take much effort to beat LoL (there's not too many people out there who likes cartoonish characters in their DOTA/HON) But hey, maybe G-man will be a new hero in DOTA =*

How about Half-Life 3? You know, the game pretty much everyone is waiting for :p

@ AuronAXE What difference does that make? thats a song, not a game :P

There's gonna be a problem when they realize Basshunter has a copyrighted song called DOTA and it's about that mod...

I'm gonna stick to the good ol' W3 version. Better than anything else.

Lol... you are mad at HoN because the developers are selling it? Wait, what? Enough said. You are truly lol.

i thought Heroes of Newerth was good until I knew that you had to cough up $30 just to play it :(. I don't care if I'm cheap its not worth it in my opinion

DOTA is the most boring and superficial type of game ever thought-out ... as a mod for to-bored-for-real-life nerds, ok ... but as standalone game this is just a joke ... regardless how you mix it up, DOTA type of games are just on-rails ... Valve didnt developed anything in the past years, and after DOTA has scored so much in the community they phoniely trying to license-in some easy cash ...

GrimGravy

If it is good enough i will leave lol in a heartbeat, Valve usually makes real good games.

Wait I thought we already had a stand alone Dota called Heroes of Newerth?

I hope Yajarbi doesn't actually think he/she knows what they are talking about The "main" developers? All they did was rip off AoS. Icefrog is and always has been the biggest part of Dota. LoL was a huge failed experiment, one that dumbed down dota too much and dota fans rejected. Everything Valve does is successful. The LoL people laugh all they want while Icefrog and Valve baithe in money from their dota game. Guinsoo and pendadragon have always been nothing without icefrog. Now give Icefrog the backing from Valve? Can you say GOLDMINE?

JuKeD24
JuKeD24

@Yajarobi LoL weren't the main developers for DotA. Guinsoo started the project 6~ years ago and stepped down. Icefrog took over the developement of DotA and made it into the popular competitive scene it is today. If it wasn't for him no one would even know what DotA was today. Icefrog now works for valve, leading a team, developing what will be the new DotA. It's not a "feudal attempt" to take the idea and the idea didn't even come from DotA. DotA is a rip-off off an old AoS game. DotA just made it popular (all thanks to Icefrog).

Yajarobi
Yajarobi

I wonder what LoL is thinking in response to this. Being the main developers are they laughing at another feudal attempt by someone to take there idea? I hope LoL has a response. Valve is kinda well known and could actually take it somewhere..."could".

Dota is the best tower defense of all time... its so deep and complicated and balanced. in other words its like starcraft but with lvl ups and items

If you think lol is better than hon, you must have been dropped on your head as a child. HoN is the best game ever released in my opinion and its really stranged that gamspot have never reviewed it...

It won't be any different from others I bet.

Even if the game is developed by Valve, it's still a DOTA game. And we've already got plenty of DOTAish games, so unless it brings something new into the gameplay... It's still just a clone like all the others :/

MetalGuyver
MetalGuyver

I am going to have my doubts about this. They will have little clue about how to properly develop the game unless they understand the many aspects of it. On one hand, you have League of Legends, the friendly and playful free to play version that's available for everyone. On the other, Heroes of Newerth, the not-so-noob-friendly one that has you being flamed on teamchat for the simple mistakes. Demi-god was indeed a great game when it came out, but the development team didn't continue expanding to keep interest until it was too late. Now Steam has the resources, how will they compete with the current ones right now? Also, DOTA was created by the players originally. Perhaps they allow the players some 'customizing'?

Grodus5

Its good to see Valve branching off into other genres. They are such a talented development team, but it seems all they do are FPSes. Personally I love these types of games (played a lot of Demigod and LoL, but never DotA) so I can't wait to see what they do with it.

so Icefrog won't release any update for W3 DotA? I just want to start W3, play DotA, not buy another game and start from Steam!

awesome. who cares about another boring fps that will be 5 hours long (ep3)? valve is taking a shot at the e-sport scene which is big news. Plus dota has more fans than half life could ever dream of having

looks like Valve is doing everything it can to take the minds of people away from "Half-Life 2 Episode 3"...i'm starting to think may be they don't know how to continue it or may be even end it!

@theMirrorsTruth I'm not saying the death of LoL is inevitable, I hope they stay strong in fact... but you shouldn't delude yourself into thinking it isn't a possibility. Valve are good enough at making games AND selling them that you can be sure that that is their goal. I'd wager this is another marketing-style gimmick-game like Alien Swarm.... "look at how versatile our Source engine is, and how convenient it is that everything is tied into our Steam platform... AND we made another real GAME unlike many of the other major studios shoving endless installments of 2nd rate interactive movies down your throat." You can be sure it'll either be cheap or free too... and if it has a price tag there are always those kooky Steam sales that everyone gets suckered into buying more than they planned on playing. I don't want LoL to suffer, but if anyone can hurt the LoL guys, it's Valve. Gotta face facts, many people in the gaming world are still clueless about anything that doesn't have a major AAA brand name attached to it (I still come across people that haven't heard of LoL yet they remember Dota), and Valve have a very impressive reputation when it comes to making quality games. I can't remember them dropping the ball on anything yet.

DiaperRash89
DiaperRash89

you guys are forgetting one key element here, a while back icefrog, THE original creator of DotA signed on with valve a while back, so this rendition of DotA could be exactly what DotA fans are looking for. Yes I know that MANY of the people who actually made DotA went to develop LoL @ Riot Games, but still.. Icefrog is the grand-daddy of DotA, so we shall see what Valve rolls along in the future..

rzepak
rzepak

I hope this happens soon. Its Valve so its going to be good and its Valve so abuse will not be tolerated becouse it would tarnish their image. DotA will once more be for players not drama queen elitists.

@the_hsoj I agree with everything you just said. It's Valve, so whatever this game is, it can't be bad. However, League of Legends suits my dota needs perfectly because dota itself, and Heroes of Newerth have very noob-hostile environments. LoL's community is waaay better/nicer. And episode 3 should definitely come out first, :P

Argle

valve? ill just wait for SC2 to come up with a good and new DOTA-esque map (which is inevitable, its probably just going to take time) , or just play it on WC3. to buy DOTA as a stand-alone game just doesnt make any sense unless its beyond epic.

Valve should just gamble and double their size and gop into overtime and roll a game a year.

This is interesting... Not sure how I feel about Valve doing a DotA game especially since LoL does a pretty good job at giving us a DotA style game that's more playable and has less jerks. A lot hardcore DotA players can be down right mean to new players who don't know what to do, that's why i never really got into the original mod. Still if it's from Valve it should be good. ***Message to Valve: Please consider finishing any long awaited and promised sequels to extremely popular IP's before starting a new side project *cough*Episode 3*cough

I don't think I've ever "not liked" a Valve game. I mean, Episode One was just okay, but damn it if they didn't make Episode II phenomenal! Can't wait to see what they can do.

Heh... I have to say, I love League of Legends, but if Valve is taking a shot at the genre... that I have to check out. Now, what intrigues me the most here, is that there seems to be a possibly of it being on consoles... DotA-style games are great with M'n'K... but with a controller? That should be fun.

@ Andriy- Because HoN is basically DOTA on a new engine? You pretty much answered your own question lol... I still can't believe people paid $30 for a clone with enhanced graphics and better matchmaking XD
