Valve's Steam Machine gets unboxed by lucky gamer

YouTube user provides first glimpse at Valve's new machine and controller in the wild; system also shown booting up.

Valve's Steam Machines shipped to 300 lucky beta testers yesterday and now the first official unboxing video is available, courtesy of YouTube user Corey Nelson.

In the unboxing video, we get a glimpse at the Steam Machine and its new haptic feedback Steam Controller, as well as various other components that ship with the system.

Nelson also provided a video of the Steam Machine booting up, complete with a look at the system's user interface. He also loads a game of Klei Entertainment's adventure game Don't Starve during the video.

Valve's Steam Machine prototype is built from off-the-shelf PC parts and is fully upgradable, meaning users can swap out the GPU, hard drive, CPU, or the motherboard if they want to.

SteamOS is also now currently available, but you might want to wait.

Pricing has not been announced for Valve's Steam Machine, but the company has said it will share more details on its system at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. Third-party Steam Machines are also expected to be unveiled during the show, including the new $1469 system from Digital Storm.

Not really sure what is the point of the steam machine vs a pc. I am not sold so far, still hesitating between PS4, X1 and PC, and though the steam machine was a strong contender for me it is slowly getting out of the picture for me.

This will sit well alongside my Wii U. Now I can play silly fun games and real strategy games on my TV without having to have my pc in the livingroom.

VERY NICE!

Love the Steam OS. The controller makes me a little nervous, though... but I'll try one when I get the chance.

This is really underwhelming. I don't see the point of streaming video games through an operating system that can't play them (e.g. Android - nVidia Shield, Linux - Steam Box). If you're locked in with a data cap ISP, you'll burn through your monthly quota in a week. Add to the fact that most Steam games don't accommodate local multiplayer like consoles do, makes this a real head scratcher. What's the point?

There are already videos of folks running performance tests with Windows on a Steam Machine. When a good cross-platform Steam OS / Windows test suite comes out, it will be damning if Windows on a Steam Machine gets a higher score than Steam OS on a Steam Machine.

An HDMI cable costs about $50. Who the f@ck is gonna buy this?

That thing is a beast.  For some reason I pictured it being much smaller.

The controls look difficult to get used to.

If they some how convince third party developers to customize their games to run a little better on steam OS and have a preset settings for the different steam machines Microsoft will be in trouble, all PC gamers will happily install steam OS beside Windows and as time pass and steam OS gets more support, gamers will start ditching windows altogether. Linux is a lot more stable, extremely more secure, doesn't need anti virus and above all is free.

Couldn't help noticing how well the steam gadgets were packed up.  Some major love and care for their product!  Hopefully these are as robust and well build as the wooden treasure box.  Looking forward to more information from these lucky guys!

It makes no sense to buy something like this, you either buy a console or build a pc. I would just upgrade my video card lol.

Meh, I was thinking of buying one of these but saw no point for the price. I just got myself a Gigabyte GTX 780 OC Windforce 3GB GDDR5 video card and putting that on my gaming comp. So much easier to run steam on a second comp with my own hardware desires and maintaining those hardware peripherals easier. I got my second comp plugged in to my HDTV and run steam like that. The console is not worth it in my view.

Sometimes I hate people and their luck.  I was a minute away from being put in the possible beta tester pool also.  Still wouldn't have been chosen though.

I'll pass (or gut it for parts) and just pop a new 780 ti or r9 290x vid card in my one year old gaming system. I already have 32g ram, ssd and i7 running 4.7ghz ran to 2 big screens in the living room. This is only good for people who don't want extra pc apps running, which I don't have anyways on my dedicated setup.

But even the $1500 steam setup only has a 1tb NON-SSD drive.. no thanks

I'd have to try these controllers to decide whether they're brillant or just dumb, but I'm guessing... brilliant. If they've managed to pull off handling mouse/trackball-adapted games (e.g. moving around a cursor), as they say they have in that demonstration video, I'm sold. Ordinary console controllers are best at action games, the steam machine controller *might* be able to handle non-action games well, and if so it's a winner. We'll see!

If that's the case, you might as well just buy a PC.

Firstly, the touchpads seem AWFUL. Otherwise, everything else appeals to me. However, if I had to pick this or a console to spend my money on, it would be the console. Also, I don't want to wait.

It looks like an inexpensive rig to get console gamers hooked on Steam.  I doubt the PC folks are their intended market.

orbit991

If this thing has folder structures and can load up mods that would be useful as it's a nice compact alternative PC replacement, but if it's just a closed steam system, then it's like a half of a working PC.

Oooh, it's picking up Steam, Valve's little project. I'm not looking to buy one, I prefer usual computers, but I know that plenty of people are interested in this. Something truly new comes this way.

Where do you buy HDMI cable? In the rich district of Manhattan?

I bought mine for $5.

Probably thousands of people... and I don't think any of them will be worried about obtaining an HDMI cable.

They won't all be 1500, they will give you choice on your hardware specs.  Essentially you will go from Xbox One/PS4 graphics for $500 and then up to PC Ultra graphics for $1500.

Choice is always good.
