Valve made a movie and it's out next month

"Free To Play" will premiere as part of a special screening at the Castro Theater in San Francisco on March 18; buy your tickets today.

Free to Play, the upcoming feature-length documentary from Valve that focuses on DOTA 2, will premiere on March 19, the developer announced today. On that date, you'll be able to watch the movie on Steam.

A special screening of the movie, including a live Q&A session after its conclusion, will take place on March 18 at the Castro Theater in San Francisco. You can buy a ticket here for $25.

Free to Play was created internally at Valve and follows the lives of three professional DOTA 2 players who speak different languages and live in different continents. The film will introduce viewers to the players and their families as they prepare to compete in the first $1 million The International Tournament.

More information about Free to Play is available on the film's website. The free-to-play DOTA 2 is a massively popular online game that boasts 7 million monthly unique users. Right this very second, more than 480,000 people are playing the game.

If they are truly as smart as everyone makes them out to be, they should make a movie about how they are patronizing and messing with everyone's minds when it comes to half life 3(at least those that care enough about it) and make it believable enough to make the drones not care about how they are being totally screwed with.

Documentary??  Not.  That's an infomercial.  And they want to charge $25 to watch it.  *facepalm*

Disillusioned gamers who wants to achieve the highest in a non existence carreer. Im a gamer been gaming since 1977. I have my own franchise business and proud to be an investor in various sectors, and yet i still game 10 hours a day. Its called focus and later time management.

Sad to see other gamers gamble their live away for something the industry doesnt actually care, but just a pawn of the business.

A $25 ticket? My goodness. I guess that's to help pay for the live Q&A. And the fact it's a special screening.

In near future addictive games like dota 2 or wow will be equal to drugs. I've played more than 1100 matches in dota 2, and I'm feel shame that I spent so much of my lifetime for nothing.

Steam has an almost endless library of games, but despite that, the top 10 is made up mostly by Valve-developed games.

Not for me. What it all comes down to is these people playing games for a living. And personally, watching people play a video game, especially something like DOTA, is boring. I guess that goes for any sport, but I do admit I get more invested when the sport actually involves physical movement. But that's just me. I'm sure for it's subject, the documentary does well. The idea that someone would drop everything in their life, though, to play video games professionally is still new to me though. Maybe in ten years, when competitive gaming is a bigger industry, people devoting their lives to it won't seem quite so silly.

I've never been much of a competitive player in my whole gaming life so I'd like to see what goes on (the mindset, the hardwork), and how or what these guys have to put in for them to get a shot at the money. GG Guys!

"Free-to-play" pretty sums up what Valve has become.

I like documentaries so I'll check this out. Beyond the mat got me hooked.

As a supporter or esports, I'm actually pretty interested in watching this. It's bad enough esports has such a negative reputation, but seeing stuff like this makes me hopeful the public will gain a new respect for it sooner rather then later.

So this is serious?  No trace of irony?  It's not anything like 'Trekkies'?

Sorry, it's not going to change anyone's opinion about professional gaming.

Lonely guy sits in a corner playing a Dota match for 40 minutes. Then you watch him queue another game for 5-6 minutes. Then you watch him play the exact same map again for the 10,000 time, perfecting his strategy so that he can one day become a professional and turn gaming into a full-time job rather than the hobby it was meant to be. Best movie idea ever. I'm surprised Hollywood didn't pick this up yet?!

@Hurvl   Only steam top ten not the whole PC library. None of the top ten PC titles are valves game. PC top ten includes WoW, Lol, COD, BF,SC, Diablo, Minecraft, WoT, SWTOR, GuildWars, non of those title either developed or published by valve.

@Pierce_Sparrow  Your thoughts aren't foreign. It still feels strange to me, as well. Though I enjoy a very competitive FPS, fighting, or racing game, so there's a degree of understanding I have of eSports, too. It's very mentally engaging and that's 50% of physical sports.

@kitmeep Maybe they're just laminates.

@Draken_Domingo  Does the negative reputation come from outside of gaming communities, like physical sports?

I am really into video games, discussing, following, etc., but I never had any interest in eSports.  I might be that most (maybe all) of the games that are played and work well for it are just not the games I'm highly interested in.

@ggregd I wasn't aware that all things that are made have the sole intent of persuading others to think a certain way.

@ggregd  And that's fine, they still get to make money doing what they love, and they probly laugh at all the people who gnash their teeth together and scream about how video games can't be sports.

@jimmy_russell Sequel: lonely guy becomes chick magnet now that he has money coming out of every orifice on his body, and lives the rest of his days in comfort making money on what he loves to do. Meanwhile, haters continue living their meaningless lives toiling away at 'real' jobs they hate, but feel better than the now unlonely guy because they aren't 'losers', but secretly only say this because they are jealous.

@ziproy  It will come at the end of the movie, Gabe Newell will be sitting in his desk blankly staring at the audience and Nick Fury will come out of the shadows and will say:

"Mr Newell.....You have something I want." than it will cut to a black screen with a closed door sound effect and the words   #HL3Confirmed will appear.

That's EXACTLY how it's going to happen.

@Tee_Mal It's a PC gamer. You can tell. He's huddled up alone in a corner playing a game designed for autistic savants.

@3dmatrixgamer @ZXspectr  shame on me... just won another match in dota 2.. I must say that gaming in overall not as addictive. It's like watching movies or reading books from time to time. but when it's about pvp, games becomes addictive. I'm waiting for the moment when Gabe Newell will go to jail for drug distribution. He is making millions on such poor people like me.

Hurvl

@3dmatrixgamer Of course they're not, I was referring to the link at the end of the article where you can see which games that are the most played on Steam right now. In that top 10, five are Valve games (Garry's Mod is practically a Valve game, although not directly developed by Valve) which includes the top three: Dota 2, CS: GO and TF2. I just found it odd that out of all the games on Valve's Steam service, so many games in the top 10 are developed by Valve.

lucutisborg

@Poodger @jimmy_russellBut gaming is a niche career that very few people will be able to actually live off. Everyone else will have to do normal jobs, including 99% of those that drop everything in their lives to "make it pro" at gaming.

Poodger

@jimmy_russell @Tee_MalIt would have been easier to spot a console gamer, he would have been drooling all over himself and wishing he was part of the master race.

@3dmatrixgamer You want to take the devs who make addictive video games to jail, then you got a long list to take care of. Just don't kill any in the process.
