With not a Final Fantasy in sight, Sega's Valkyria Chronicles has proven to be one of the PlayStation 3's best Japanese-style role-playing games. And, to keep that experience fresh, Sega said today that on April 16 it would be delivering a trio of downloadable content packs designed to extend Valkryia Chronicles. Each pack will cost $4.99.

Valkyria Chronicles fans looking for more of a challenge out of the game's original storyline can pick up the Hard EX Mode pack. The EX Mode ramps up the difficulty level on enemy combatants, and players must wade through the Imperial hordes without the heavily armored Edelweiss tank.

The other two packs extend Valkyria Chronicles with new missions. Enter the Edy Detachment presents a scenario in which a six-member squad has been separated from Squad 7 and must defend a village while being heavily outnumbered. In Behind Her Blue Flame, players assume the role of a young engineer in the service of Selvaria, fighting for the Imperial Army.

Great game but trophy support would have been nice!

Hopefully they make some money back with the dlc and bring us the sequel.

@joelgargan: If you are a fan of either, at least rent it. As for the DLC... I'm pretty anti-DLC. Also, VC has such an amazing replay value to begin with, by the time I'm done with the game, I'm ready for a break anyway.

@joelgargan I'd describe VC as far more of a strategy game than RPG, but it depends on what's important to you in your RPG. Critical RPG elements for me are character design and development (through advancement and equipment changes) and character personality and story depth. Going with those, VC is far more an adventure-strategy game than sRPG. It has the strong character personality and story depth, but it is weak on your ability to customize and develop your troops (although there are level advancement and equipment modifications available, they are limited in choice). I find it hard to put it in the same category as RPGs, but it easily fits with strategy games. So, to answer your question, I'd liken it far more to strategy than to RPG. That takes nothing away from the game, though, as it's great any way you cut it.

@KayHangman Just how much of an RPG is Valkyria Chronicles? I'm considering getting it, but I don't want a full on strategy game.

I own my PS3 primarily for its Blu-ray capabilities, but Valkyria Chronicles was a game I didn't pass up. And I'm glad I didn't as it's an incredible game. If they made more games of this quality, I'd buy more.

WTF is with this nonsense about paying $ for a harder goddam difficulty level? **** DLC.

This Valkyria Chronicles game, MGS4, and Ninja Gaiden II Sigma are the only reasons why I want a PS3, and are damn good reasons if you ask me.

Best Strategy game I've ever played! I'll definitely get all three packs and for sure the Hard EX mode. In this game the tough battles are the funnest ones. Now imagine a new game. Valkyria Chronicles: Modern Warfare...ohhh snap!

Great news; this one's a real gem and I'll gladly line up for more. Wouldn't mind seeing it ported to other platforms to get a wider audience. Me want sequel!

I'd heard Edy was a popular character in Japan but I never figured she'd get her own campaign/pack. I'd rather they had made a campaign for Vyse/Aika or even Ted. The Behind her Blue Flame pack sounds cool, it's always interesting to see how the other side works.

Fantastic news for a fantastic game. I'm down with the new mission packs. My hope is that Sega bases the decision for a sequel on how well these sell.

I'm glad SE isn't leaving such a great game out to dry. I'll probably end up buying all three packs.

As if the games wasn't great enough it's now getting great DLC, I hope SEGA keeps this strategy up.

The world needs more games that are as simultaneously unique and awesome as VC. I can't wait for the 16th!

sweet, good idea, course there are other things they could have added. (the ability to create your own soldier, but only one and he/shes as expendable as most your characters.)

I'll buy the two scenarios first and then maybe the hard EX later on.....

Valkyria Chronicles is an awesome game. BTW, it's currently on sale at Gamestop for $30 as part of their spring sale. I don't think I would pay $5 just for a Hard EX difficulty mode, though. More missions might be worth it, though I'm not sure about playing as the imperials. I guess I'll get it, though. I love this game. :)

Major awesomeness. Gamespot criminally underrated this game IMO. One of the better RPG titles in recent years. I'll be looking forward to this DLC.
