Valkyria Chronicles 3 translated into English by fans

A fan-made English translation of Valkyria Chronicles 3 is now available to download.

A group of fans have released a patch which adds English translation to Valkyria Chronicles 3, a tactical role-playing game Sega published in Japan only in 2011.

If you can get your hands on the Japanese version of the game, you can find the patch and rather complicated instructions on how to install it on your PSP or Vita, here.

The first game in the Valkyria Chronicles series was fully localized and released on the PlayStation 3 in North America in 2008. The sequel was also fully localized and released on the PSP in North America in 2010. Gamespot reviewed both games favorably at the time, saying their bold and fresh take on the strategy role-playing genre was both beautiful to look at and fun to play.

Unfortunately, in 2011 Sega confirmed that Valkyria Chronicles 3 would not be localized because the PSP platform wasn't popular and well liked in North America and Europe, and that Valkyria Chronicles II did not sell enough to justify localization costs.

One of the best Original IPs from Sega in ages. Shame it didn't do so well.

Persona and this are big reasons to get a VITA. But it's still not quite worth it for me.

Maybe when Gaikai comes out with the PS4 it'll be a good idea.

The 1st game was incredible but unfortunately it didn't sell well enough to justify its budget. If only more people bought it when it first came out.

Sega can go to hell.  First you disgrace the series by moving it from consoles to an underperforming handheld, then you express indignation when your VASTLY INFERIOR second installment doesn't sell as much, then you refuse to localize your goddamn games.

What are you now, Capcom?

Sega should have done an all English Collectors Edition for US and Europe. Everyone would buy it

I've been playing VC3 in Japanese on my PSP for years it seems, nice to finally see a localization so I can do more than infer the story and dialog.  Thank god for super fans like this and the ones that translated Mother 3, YOU PPL ARE HEROES!

valkyria 2 was just bad the 3rd one is the real sequel and it never got localize, so of course people won't buy valkyria 2.

Shame on you Sega, you wasted such a wonderful franchise like that. Bless these selfless translators, they did a brilliant job all free!

what a crying shame....

That a game as good as Valkyria Chronicles don't get to see fully localized sequels on the PS3. I played the first game on the ps3 only recently - my that was a joy. Pure hours upon hours of fun and pleasure. The amazing cast and voice acting, the charming and intuitive interface, the story, the gameplay.

When I finished the game I was sad  to say goodbye to the characters, as if I just said goodbye to real people.

I sure hope that one day we will see some sequels for PS3/PS4, in English of course.

And here lies the problem for me. I hate playing rpg's on handhelds. It probably has something to do with pushing a handheld that doesnt sell well by releasing certain games on it instead of a console. It works fine for games like Mario or Pokemon, but an RPG belongs on console's. Playing Bravely Default on my daughters 3DS atm and it sucks, the game is great but it just doesnt work on this damn little screen. If they made it for Wii U it would have been so much better to play but now its hard to enjoy it for me. Just my opinion but maybe something they should think about next time they release an rpg.

Its always a shame when a series stops to be localized :(
The first time i was confronted with that practice was back then with the PC Engine/TurboGrafx.
Working Designs brought Cosmic Fantasy 2 from Japan to the west, made a fantastic job with the translation (vocals was amazing).
I finished the game and at the end of credits it was displayed "See you soon on Cosmic Fantasy 3".
It never came out, probably the sales didnt justified the effort :(
The next big hit was that NEC didnt localized Y's IV for the TG :(
And also i personally dont like the fact that almost all JRPG moved to handhelds as i refuse to play on small displays.
Sadly, the demand for JRPG's on the consoles is very low...i wonder how that happened...the PS2 was THE JRPG console.

I really enjoyed the game, I just didn't like the emphasis on score it had in the battles.

they went from PS3, to PSP localized to PSP only Japan to a card game.

Seems to me that they're on a steady downward slope.

wonder when the board game and book then finally short story come out.

i think the series died when they made the sequals for PSP instead of PS3

PSP is like a hand held version of the PS2, way to downgrade the sequals, not only is the screen smaller coz you can't play it on the tv, but the hardware to run the game has been limited as well,

and yeah someone is gonna say but you can buy it on the vita store, but i'm fairly sure if you buy it on the vita store, it'll be a psp port of the game, abit like playing 'tales of graces f' which is clearly not a full blooded PS3 title

what they need to do now is release a collection like God of War series, have the original PS3 version (i'm fairly sure the PS3 version isn't the first entry into the series) PLUS have the 2 PSP sequals completely remastered to HD and released to PS3 as well.....a proper remastered HD not a dodgy graces f remastered, and yes i do have a copy of graces f, i am abit p'd off coz my save data got corrupt and sent me back to the start of the long $$ dungeon and i just don't have the will to pick it up again

MadcatMK6

What Sega SHOULD do is take Valkyria Chronicles 2 and 3, make them HD, and release them as an HD collection on the PS3.

@LordRaymondSales of the first game were fine outside Japan.  It was the second game that sold like crap, because it was worse in every way and on an underperforming handheld console.

@bluefox755 What's funny is that the other two games are much larger than the original though. More characters, hundreds of missions, a lot more story scenes, a lot of classes, etc.

@Ravenlock_2112 I have to disagree, handhelds are the optimal way to play rpgs, you can watch something on the tv in the back ground during the grind, they make travels to and from work bearable and you can put it into sleep mode when you need a break and start just where you left off when you want. For the time poor its the way to go man.

xOmniCloudx
xOmniCloudx

@Ravenlock_2112 Highly disagree. But PSP has a converter that lets you play games on your TV in HD and it upscales beautifully even on full screen. Look into it.

The reason it went to psp is because the first game was costly and did not sell well. The psp ones were made mostly for Japan because handheld game sells can trump console sells there but not anywhere else in the world. So unless more people will play remastered hd games on the last gen system ps3 don't get any hopes up. Outside of sonic all their games have sold pretty poorly here.

@MadcatMK6They didn't sell enough for Sega to justify it. They didn't even bother translating the 3rd game.

@Thanatos2k I wish that was true but if it did well enough then the second game would have definitely been on the ps3. Looks like it either broke even or make a little profit so they cut their losses and made a cheap sequel on psp.

@xOmniCloudx must be an obscure way of doing it, even at this stage alot of sites say that its impossible, i remember trying to look for a way to do it when my psp was still working, it was like chasing the the rainbow, you get 90% of the population saying its impossible, and a handful of people saying its doable but no one has ever seen it done lol

i'm pretty sure the new vita tv advertise playing the psp + vita on the big screen (once it gets it's $$ out of the asian countries), other then that i've never seen anyone working a psp or vita on the big screen b4

sladakrobot

@xOmniCloudx How many models have that output?
I heard only the PSP 1000 can do it (i have that one)

mikebrand83

@AceJakk  There is quite a bit of truth to that accusation, however. Tactics where you can end up with half your squad on the ground but finishing in 2 ~ 3 turns by barging your way to the objective? That gets an A rating.

Meanwhile, tactics where not a single squad member falls, and every enemy is comprehensively swept away, but takes a couple of extra turns? B or lower rating.

... Which is why I usually try to go for A rating on first play through for more EXP and DCT, while having the freedom of more varied tactics on subsequent play through.

@norcodaev@Diegoctbai as well speak English, Spanish and Catalan. hopefully Japanese one day. It's not a very fair comment to say "go learn the language" just to play a game. that's just silly.

I finished Final Fantasy XI (japanese version) when i was 6 years old, it was easy, by deduction you can learn japanese.

Diegoctba

@Tommy7600@Diegoctba

Go learn japanese then. It's easy to learn another language, for example: portuguese, spanish and italian, three languages but they are all the same, if you speak one of them, you know the other two.

Thanatos2k
Thanatos2k

@LordRaymond@Thanatos2k Wrong.  Sega is well known for making shitty development decisions, and this is one of them.  There was a trend with lots of developers moving their main line series to handhelds, like Suikoden, Lufia, Ys, Kingdom Hearts, Castlevania, Shin Megami Tensei.  Sega was just following this failure trend and it blew up in their faces.

DWalker131

@LordRaymond i remember agessss ago reading an article which i think they was trying to squeeze whatever life is left in the the PSP, saying the PSP is not dead, theres life left in the PSP and saying a game like Valkyria Chronicles does not need to utilised next gen consoles (PS3) to be successful so they put the sequal on the PSP to prove all that,

so either

1, they were trying to prove a point (PSP) is not dead at the time of Valkyria Chronicles 2 release...which i'm sure was past the PSP prime time

or

2, sales just wasn't as high as they expected, so they dumped the sequal onto the PSP to save money according to some people,

bit hard to argue which was the cause, but then again imagine making the next Final Fantasy "sequal" exclusively for the SNES, its like why would you do that ? and has that ever been done before ? a direct sequal going exclusively on a previous gen console, as far as i can remember sequals have always been on current gen and/or next gen, never back a gen exclusively

what do you guys think ?

@xOmniCloudx dammit, wish i met you sooner woulda enjoyed my psp like 2 million times more, i am book marking this and definitely grabbingi it, if the Vita TV doesn't  sell outside japan, coz suppedly the Vita Tv can project PSP and Vita onto the tv through remote play or something or other, i can't remember the details completely but yours will be my backup plan

thanx for the tip mate, gonna renew my love for my forgotten console RIP PSP lol

@DWalker131  I actually found an even better one of the same line called the LKV8000. The PSPHD42 is great but it only goes to 720p. The LKV8000 goes to 1080p and has a toggle that lets you choose which upscale option you want in addition to which screen sizes you want. The products look near identical so, the key thing to look for is the back of the box. The LKV8000 will have a switch to toggle between 720 and 1080p and the PSPHD42 doesn't. LKV8000 is a bit trickier to find since even if you search for it on amazon, it only directs you to the PSPHD42 and some other no name one. If you got to ebay you will find a lot of them though. However, the LKV8000 is reasonably more expensive than the PSPHD42 usually by $20 more.

@DWalker131 I actually found an even better one and it's actually of the same line to the one I recommended. The one I originally recommended is great but it only goes to 720p. The other goes to 1080p and has a toggle that lets you choose which upscale option you want in addition to which screen sizes you want. They look near identical. The key thing to look for is the back of the box, the 1080 one will be the one with a switch to toggle and one that doesn't. To find the 1080p one look up LKV8000. There are no amazon listings, as it only directs you to the 720p one and then some other no name one. If you got to ebay you will find a lot of them. The 1080p one is more expensive though, typically around $20 more.

@DWalker131 @xOmniCloudx  The only people unaware of them that have claimed to look are people that haven't been looking very hard or didn't at all. They have been available for years on major internet sites like ebay and amazon and people have released video on youtube for years now as well. To test I just now simply typed in PSP HDMI and several videos of the converter popped up. However PSP 2000 and 3000 made it super easy as even without a converter it's as simple as getting composite (2000) and component (3000) cables and hooking them up to your TV. That's even easier to find and all you need to do is type in PSP TV on youtube and a million videos of people showing it pop up. But needless to say, that option wont look as good as a straight HDMI converter since that's actual HD resolution it upscales to. The go can do it too but sadly, the PSP 1000 can't do it at all since it doesn't support video output in general.

There are several of these devices for PSP and even older game consoles. You can get ones that put your SNES games on an HDTV with proper upscaling. It's incredibly easy and quick to. Cable boxes are more complex and time consuming to hook up lol. All you do is get the input device and plug the PSP to it. Takes seconds and is simple. Will output to your TV and give you the option of PSP screen size on the TV or full screen that is nicely upscaled. Lag is non-existent if your set up isn't cheap.  To make it easier on you, type the following name on amazon, ebay and youtube, you are welcome. Pyle Home PSPHD42 PSP to HDMI Converter with Upscaling for Portable Play Station

@sladakrobot@xOmniCloudx Oddly enough, the PSP 1000 series can't do it. It's the Slim & Lite and the 3000 series that can do it. I think the GO series can do it as well, but I'd have to question people if they bought that one.

@DWalker131 @LordRaymond i agree, but honestly the whole psp is dead thing is sony's fault, for updating a handheld console like that without backwards compatibility.
