US PS3 Store already online

The day before the console's North American debut, the PS3's answer to Xbox Live Marketplace is up and running; demos for Resistance, Motorstorm downloadable.

by

Though the PlayStation 3 does not officially go on sale until November 17, Sony isn't wasting time getting the console's online services ready. Those lucky enough to get a prelaunch PS3 can now register for an online account, check out the PlayStation Store, the PS3 equivalent of Xbox Live Marketplace, with the console's browser, and download the system's first demos. Rudimentary options for friends lists and messages are also available.

Though registration is free, those looking to hook up their PS3s with Sony's online service will need a valid credit card. Once signed up, gamers can choose an avatar from several pages of Sony-centric art, including pictures from the Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, God of War, and SOCOM games.

The online store is currently populated by trailers for Lair, Genji: Days of the Blade, Warhawk, Resistance: Fall of Man, NBA 07, Calling All Cars!, Motorstorm, Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom, and Cash Guns Chaos. Several free demos are also available, including those for Blast Factor, Formula One Championship Edition, Motorstorm, Cash Guns Chaos, Resistance, and NBA 07. Sony is also offering two downloadable games--Cash Guns Chaos and Blast Factor, each priced at $7.99.

But it isn't all about games. There are also Blu-ray disc trailers for Black Hawk Down, House of Flying Daggers, Ultraviolet, and more.

"To pay for things online you need a credit card or a prepaid card, no-one excepts checks anymore. If you sign up for any internet service provider or just about ANYTHING they require a credit card to make sure you have a way to pay for the stuff you download, that and it detours Credit Card Fraud." Except that with Xbox Live marketplace you don't need a credit card. For Silver service (free demos, other downloads, trailers, etc.) you need absolutely nothing (well except the 360 and an internet connection, etc.). For full or Gold service you can just get a pre-paid card. I hate using my credit card for online stuff. I'd much rather use a pre-paid card and take care of it that way. PS3's online service just won't be as user-friendly as Xbox Live's. What do you expect for free?

if the online junk was not add yeah they would lose out on profits that is true. ms started this to get ahead of the rest to begin with, now every one is just jumping into the same spot. and yea there will be constant bickering about this. but really come on.....xangel0884 your talking about corperate crimes yet ms was sued for monopolizing their wares years ago (or it was a day dream). really you are getting money ripped out of your wallet by any of the systems you get but sony is straight forward at least ms has all of the hd add ons making the prices pretty much equal (if you buy the add ons). i could careless about online play any way i just want some games that i can play through that are of good quality.

......*reads xangel0884's post*.......*looks around*.......*finds a violin and begins to play for those poor "victums of corporate crimes"*. "Everyone will agree that......." whatever the end of that sentence is...it's wrong. Everyone will agree on nothing...ever. If you are going to spew forth such claims about how awful Sony is for "copying" other companies then I think you should do some homework on the history of all corporations until you realize that a majority of all companies will, at some time or another, more often than not, copy a different idea from someone else if they can't think of their own. Sony is not the only ones that do this. MS & Nintendo have copied ideas from several others as well. Next complaint please.

Everyone will agree that SOny copied MS xbox live/ marketplace feature. Now i see that this is one of SOny's next generation strategy on winning this console wars. FACT: PS3 next generation strategies: COpying innovative ideas from MS and nintendo= False and fabricated information about PS3's features and capabilities= Exaggeration about games in terms of graphics and gameplay Clearly Sony is dishonest and doesnt really care about its main source of profit: us the gamers/consumers. This company will do anything to earn money but it seems most gamers doesnt see this anomaly why? because they are dumb and stupid. They dont have their own FREEWILL. They dont know that in the end, they are the victims of these corporate crimes.

Good to know that they're getting it up and running ahead of time, so beta PS3 owners can help sort out any early problems.

drewt003, obviously you've used neither, why would you be tired of something that is constantly expanding and listening to their users? not to mention the fact that most of the stuff you claim to be tired of is free on live just as it is on PS3. PS3 does allow free multiplayer, but you will still need to pay to play some games, we've yet to see how many tho. and seeing as how people are paying 600 bucks and claim that complaining about price is stupid, then they should have no problem forking over $4.17 a month. the arguement about paying for xbox live being a rippoff is steadily losing its credibility. Live has a lot to offer and just because you plan on owning a different system with a similar service doesnt mean the other one is crap. the truth is Live is an outstanding service and the PS network certainly seems to be in touch with what made Live successful as their first wave of online content is respectable, whether or not the PS Network can surpass the quality of live has yet to be established

chuchogalot Everyone Just go read the first couple pages of the thread. Its more useful than what gamespot posted. This is good advice. But since you'se wont do this let me spell it out real easy for those still confused. Demos are free. Full games like Blast Factor are not. YOU DO NOT NEED A CREDIT CARD to set up an account. You can skip that. If you want to buy something like Blast Factor you need to put money in your wallet. You can do this 2 ways. With a credit card. Or with a Playstation card. You know the XB point cards? Same thing. If I come back to this post and people are saying "Do I need a credit card? I thought demos were supposed to be free" I'm goin to hunt you down and kick your dog.

Hum...now that the marketplace is done, can they work on the friend list and in-game voice communication? Personally I feel those are more important, but I guess they don't generate income....so who cares?

"ATLBraves07 If Sony sucks then why did they dominate the last console war?? " They won the last two wars because they had the best titles, the right console pricing ;)

drspotxxx
drspotxxx

ATLBraves07, do you really want an answer to that question? its called hype and leverage, thats why they win. they out hype their competition and retailers tell people to get playstaion over saturn, leaving that console gen a one horse race. the next gen they use backwards compatabiliy, their newfound fanbase and a one year head start. Sony sucks because they are using the leverage they gained in the last two gens to make everyone pay for their new media format and basically rip off every feature that makes the other consoles stand out. Sony is using their loyal fan base to drag their failing brand name back out of the muck. thats how they suck. they promised the world 2 years ago and are now delivering only half of what they promised , i assume to get people to lose intrest in the competition. MS has done some pretty underhanded things too. however, in terms of being blatant liars and abusing the consumer, yes Sony does suck

drspotxxx
drspotxxx

apparently u dont need a cc, i guess i was wrong. also, I'm glad to see they didnt waste that year that the PS3 has been delayed. they've obviously been studying xbox live during that time in order to completely dupelicate it, they sure didnt use the time to make enough systems. i just hope its more like the real deal than a cheap knock off, cuz live is def sweet. i just think its funny that Sony claims they dont pay attention to their competition. must be why they have a Geometry Wars ripoff on day 1. oh well, i guess every company steals what works, lets just hope this type of online support becomes the new standard for the industry. seems to be heading that way with all 3 next gen systems having their own live or possible equivelant

why do they need my credit card number if im not buying anything? if we are gonna make lame comparisons to xbox live than why doesnt MS need your credit card for their free silver account? if you advertise something as free, you shouldnt need a credit card. what about all the little kids that want to play free demos and dont have a credit card they can use? sounds a little fishy to me, tho i am glad they manned up with some passable content

WakkaWakka55
WakkaWakka55

All of the people that just said you have pay for demos and videos, are you guys blind? The credit cards are for security purposes, or in case you wanted to buy a game like Blast Factor you can automatically click on it to buy it without having to put in your credit card number everytime. Also you have the option of using a Playstation card as credit for buying games online. "Yeh, I thought Sony said it would be free ... "Cash Guns Chaos and Blast Factor, each priced at $7.99." ... another Sony lie .." ROFL are you stupid? Xbox live arcade charges for their games as well. Cash Guns Chaos and Blast Factor arent free games, they are Playstation arcade games. The amount of FUD on this page is phenomenal. This is almost exactly like Xbox Live Marketplace, yet people still bash it. Ps3 online is also unified, just like Xbox Live, for all of the confused out there.

NinjaMan130
NinjaMan130

oxymoron1331 Im assuming that giving your credit card is a one time thing. The online service will still be free and so is some content, its just that there is other content that you may have to purchase. So to make it easy you give the info at the beginning so when ever you wish to buy something that actually costs money, you don't have to constantly give your credit info.

You have to give sony your credit card? So is everything online going to cost money (demos, trailers, etc.) I'd rather pay a yearly fee then have to pay for every little thing.

pete369874125
pete369874125

Sony never said the downloadable games would free. They never mentioned a price for them but they were never gonna be free. If you don't know Cash guns chaos and blast factor are like 360 arcade games. Theres no way there gonna be free.

My PS3 does not have HDMI cables....what sucks more is that it doesnt up convert so my old HDTV does not have 720P. This means that if your TV does NOT support 720P, you will be playing in 480P. But I cant complain, I got mine Free!

vboydjr
vboydjr

No it's not packed with the HDMI cables. The only games that charge an online service through Playstation are concidered MMO games. That's as far as I know anyway.
