[UPDATE] Nintendo to integrate Skylanders-like figurines with Wii U and 3DS

Business named NFP-nfc; figurines to store save data.

[UPDATE] Nintendo also announced its first planned web and smartphone services called Mario Kart TV. Though Mario Kart TV will link directly to Mario Kart 8, it can also be viewed on PCs, smartphones and tablets. The service will allow you to watch replays, view rankings, and watch official Nintendo videos. Nintendo is also preparing to roll out a Wii U system update in June that will speed up the console's startup time by 20 seconds.

The original story is below.

Nintendo will be integrating Skylanders-like figurine business named NFP-nfc, the company announced at its fiscal meeting today.

Analyst Dave Gibson was present and live-tweeted the event, stating that Nintendo demonstrated the Mario figure across many games "including saves".

Gibson also tweeted that Nintendo would be showcasing the Nintendo Figurine Platform (NFP) game and figures at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo. The 3DS will also reportedly be getting an infrared reader so that the figures will be able to be used across the Wii U and 3DS.

The intergration of figures into games has been featured most recently in the Skylanders series, published by Activision. Disney has released its own take on the figurine game, launching Disney Infinity last summer and selling more than 3 million $75 starter packs to date.

Yesterday Nintendo posted its report for the fiscal year ending March 31, revealing a loss of 46.4 billion yen ($457 million). The Wii U console has sold 2.72 million units in the last 12 months.

Do you think Nintendo should be investing into figurine games? Let us know in the comments below.

Thank you Pixel Addict..Finally some one whom shares my view for a New Nintendo that revives the "Magic" of the past. Nintendo was "Disney"-like in the 80's when the Home Gaming market had Crashed and Eroded. Defending the Marketing ploys of this current Administration at Nintendo is Flawed. I have been to over 15 E-3's and each and every time Nintendo Seems Lost and unaware of the expectations of its fan base. Its time for new Leadership at Nintendo. I have met "Reggie" and every time he speaks its as if from a memorized Sales Advertisement or from a Teleprompter not from someone who loves Games. The House of "N" needs someone with Passion, and Genuine Excitement who can relate to the products. Someone whom loves them as much I, and all of You do. Gimmicks have seriously injured Nintendo ..Funny that I own them all, But now is not a time for Gimmicks Now is the time for the Pillar Games that Built Nintendo to be the True Focus of their recovery.

Seriously enough with the Skylanders, I've never payed attention to it, it also killed Spyro like The Legend of Spyro series did, Sony get Spyro and Crash Bandicoot back from Activision!

It's smart business, but as a consumer I don't really know what to think about this.

P.S. Please forgive me if my post seems idiotic, I've had more then a few drinks.

Ok I think we can all agree that Nintendo Character Merch can be found everywhere from "Toy R Us" to "Target" to "Hot Topic". What I want to know is whether there is a compelling reason to buy these figures. If with the module plugged into the Wii U it would allow "Yoshi" to replace "Epona" in the new "Zelda" game then Great!! but as usual Nintendo will Over Promise and Under Deliver. Anyone remember the promise of 3D Movies on cartridge for the 3DS??

Heck me and my Friends were at that E3 and Saw Footage and Trailers. Typical Nintendo ..So bring on the Mini Figures.. I will buy if there is a reason to. I can already hear Gamestop Screaming They will have Exclusives (which will just be a Repaint.)

Hahaha I guess they regretted turning down the Skylanders offer so much, they decided to put their own spin on it :p

Exactly my point!! Now if this Idea was truly revolutionary and by having said "Mario" or "Yoshi" Figure I could upload them into Pokémon X and have "Mario" as my Trainer and say "Yoshi" as my "Pikachu" well that would be amazing.

Imagine "Luigi" Castlevainia Or "Zelda" Hyrule Crossing.. now that's Game Changing not just a need to buy a $12.99 Figurine.

Surprised it took them this long to do this.  Seems like a no brainer for them.  Basically sums up the Nintendo demographic

While this sucks for the gamer, kids are gonna eat this crap up.

Nintendo will make back all the money it lost on the wii u with this nonsense.

Goddamn Nintendo looks pathetic right now. Return to the days of the game cube please.

First Activision thought of it, then Disney ripped them off, and now Nintendo.  Its probably too late for them now.  Stores don't want to devote more shelf space to more figure based video games.

Gotcha, First off look at all "Lego" Games (which Skylanders is a blatant Copy of) all of the Lego Figures are there in the game to be unlocked. In Skylanders they are all there as well as long as you buy the figures. You cant simply DLC them, Now Nintendo will Exploit this to the Nines to Squeeze money from the true fan base that they still have.

Evil_Sidekick
Evil_Sidekick

I have nothing against the "figurine business model". What i have against is not making it optional. People that want the figurines, buy it; people that don't, buy digitally like it was normal dlc.

YearoftheSnake5

They should have jumped on board with the figurine business ages ago. They had a golden opportunity to have Skylanders be Nintendo exclusive, but they turned it down. Had they agreed to it, their fortunes might be different today.

Good lord Nintendo please stop making me laugh as I am about to lose Bladder control. "Skylander" like figurines?? So your idea to make money is for me to pay for a figurine of "Mario" to be able to play "Mario" in a "Mario" Game??

This will not save you.. Ok, ok before I piss myself please listen.. Do you have your "Hello Kitty" Headphones off??

Ok then this is how you save Nintendo.. MAKE GREAT GAMES AGAIN !! "You Use to. Give the people what they want from Nintendo.. NINTENDO!! Why do you wait 4, 5 heck even 6 years between Great new "Mario" and "Zelda" Games?? Heck it took you 6 years until the decline of the Wii to pop out a new Pikmin when we could be playing Pikmin 6 by now, and Why all the Re-hashes?? sure they are great but they wont sell Systems.. What sells Systems?? Killer APPs !! Things like "Interstellar Mario", "Cosmic Metroid", "Zelda Time Warrior", "Donkey Kong Arcade Jumper" and even A TRUE PLATFORM KID ICARUS SEQUEL !! Sure, You have "Mario Kart 8" Coming, I am surprised you can count that high, but please look at how long it took you to churn it out.

I weep for you Nintendo because it really does seem like you have run out of any creative process remaining.. Oh wait unless at E3 your going to announce E-Reader 2 now with 47 cards I have to collect to load Pikmin 4.. Please if you have to Sub-let your Properties to other companies the do so.. You have done it before with "Super Mario Rpg" to Squaresoft and The "Zelda Ages" Gameboy Color Games to Capcom.. If you have run out of Ideas then let the New generation of game designers have at thee.

Last line.. Give us Eternal Darkness 2 (Heck even the roach on the screen gag will still work)

That's Nintendo for you. Comes up with a 'quick reaction' marketing idea two years too late.

Why dont they ccrap the wii u and make a console with modern hardware instead of stayiing last gen hardware ? The figurines wont make the console sell more because its the console itself that is the problem. Even the developers are making fun of the console. It shows you how Nintendo is so disconnected from reality. If anyone is not convinced yet, just look at the wii u's sales figures. even if fanboys tells the console is great, its awesome and all, the numbers says otherwise. How long can you blind yourself and your fans Nintendo before you fix your mistakes ?

As terrible blashemy as it is I kind of would like to see Smash Bros implement figurines and in a way that without buying them you could only use the Mii avatar character. The nerd in me would be pretty proud if I had to buy Samus, Wario, Diddy and Luigi figurines just so I can use the characters and show that those are the ones I'm willing to invest in.

There are only two things I want from Nintendo:

1) Modern hardwares

2) Unified digital accounts

@VenkmanPHD  Doubtful. It worked for Skylanders and Disney, because they where able to release on all systems so had a huge market, Nintendo only has 3DS and Wii U, both of which are struggling.

@snacky_smorez  Return to the days of the Gamecube? Really? How old are you?

Surely you remember that the Gamecube was a huge commercial failure.

I've heard "Return to the days of the SNES" or even N64, but Gamecube? Really?

@PixelAddict

What makes you think they're only going to use it the way Skylanders does? Considering there's no game bundled/attached to these figures, it seems like they're going to use it for more than just "play as this character".

Zepthire95
Zepthire95

@PixelAddict Even funnier if you heard the story that the Skylanders dev initially offered Nintendo exclusivity for at least the first game.

charliezard
charliezard

@El_Zaggy  I think everyone knows that the WiiU has problems. The trouble is that if they actually released a new, more powerful system right now, it would be suicide. Really. We all would like a new system from nintendo. They made a mistake with the Wii U, and they know it. But if they did come out with something new, it would alienate the millions of Nintendo fans who DID buy a Wii U. It would basically mean a huge, huge loss in money for the wasted R&D.

They will probably come out with a new system in a couple years, but they really can't do that now. They have to try to get the Wii U at least somewhat profitable and wait a bit first.

@ChiefFreeman Personally, I'd like to be able to buy a replacement tablet, just in case anything happens.

@getyeryayasout  I actually think parents and kids will both enjoy them. Most parents are young enough now to remember Mario, Zelda, etc. I can imagine a lot of parents will get some joy out of buying a cool Zelda figurine.

WllDan7

If they were on the ps4/x1 level you would still not buy it. So people saying that quiet down. No one is buying what you are saying.

rIVAL_sWORD84
rIVAL_sWORD84

@bj91x  It already has modern hardware but not as powerful as ps4, I think the only thing troubles me is the region locking of console and locking user ID with wiiu console unit which is terrible and annoying for someone coming from PlayStation line of consoles i can go ahead and buy region 1 ,2 and region 3 games and still play on any region machine on ps3 but i cant do that on wiiu, its a shame. i hated region locking on ps2 and ps1. Nintendo has continued to piss people off.

abHS4L88

@spike6958

Nintendo's IPs have a huge widespread appeal also like hystavito said, 3DS has over 43m sold, if that's struggling then what's the Vita (I want a Vita, just putting it into perspective).

Not only will kids love this but so will many adults who are long time Nintendo fans or those who don't really play videogames that much but still like collecting Nintendo related items due to their charm.

charliezard
charliezard

@abHS4L88 @PixelAddict  Yeah, I agree. With as many IPs, Nintendo has, and the cross-platform compatibility, I'm sure they'll come up with plenty of unique ways to use em. I probably won't buy them, but I don't mind the idea. I'm sure it will get them some easy cash from kids who are excited about them. No problem with that.

PixelAddict
PixelAddict

@abHS4L88   Your comment baffles me. But then, Nintendo's strategy sometimes baffles me, so maybe you're onto something.

Meaning, Nintendo might just want to sell some action figures that have NOTHING to do with videogame interaction.

Which would be pointless. So it's probably what they'll do.

Nintendo does a lot of things right, but it's almost always due to acting on their "gut" feelings, translating to luck. Because they arrogantly refuse to listen to consumer feedback. They have arguably the best IP's in all of videogames, but their business strategies since the NES have been questionable (and definitely questioned) at best.

PixelAddict
PixelAddict

@Zepthire95 Yeah, I remember reading that! If there was ever something right up Nintendo's alley, it's Skylanders. They should have locked that up then and there, but that's Nintendo for you.

They are many things, but quick-reacting is not one of them.

Zepthire95
Zepthire95

@Yomigaeru @ChiefFreeman This. That's definitely my main problem with the Wii U atm. For me Nintendo platforms are always the fun party game platforms where I play with a bunch of friends but with the Wii U I don't want anyone to play it whilst eating or drinking since if anything happened to it the whole console would basically be done for.

PixelAddict
PixelAddict

@abHS4L88 So.. just to be clear...

You are DEFENDING Nintendo not paying attention to consumers?

Wow. Just wow.

Nintendo IS MY YOUTH. The first console I ever purchased with my own money was the NES Duck Hunt/SMB combo unit. My memories of playing Punch Out!!, The Legend of Zelda, SMB 2 & 3, and Metroid are some of my most cherished gaming memories OF ALL TIME.

But Nintendo has no clue how to run a business. They don't do pressers, they don't listen to customer feedback, and they do succeed in spite of themselves. It honestly makes me worry about them, because I DO NOT want to see them go anywhere.

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@PixelAddict

Many times listening to the consumers is not the best thing or even remotely smart. Videogames more than any other medium has shown how what the consumers claim they want contradicts with actual sales. I wouldn't say it's luck, sometimes it is but it's also paying attention to what actually sells and how consumers react to products. Listening to the consumer when it comes to videogames is pretty much listening to no more than 15% of the crowd.

If the figurines have nothing to do with videogame interaction, then well they've been doing that for nearly 3 decades so there'd be no point in these figurines.

bj91x
bj91x

Really? So if I sell a system and get a different one, say 3DS to 3DS XL, I don't lose the digital games I bought on the 3DS? I can download them again on the 3DS XL?

Also, are some classic games playable on multiple systems? Say, if I buy an SNES game, is it playable on the Wii U and 3DS?
