[UPDATE] Metal Gear Fan Remake Not Happening

Project disappears from listing and is no longer happening.

by

[UPDATE] The Metal Gear Remake project is no longer in development.

Although the mod developer provided no explanation, an update on the mod site reads: "The mod you are trying to view has ceased development and consequently been archived. If you are a member of this mod, can demonstrate that it is being actively developed and will be able to keep this profile up to date with the latest news, images, videos and downloads, please contact us with all details and we will consider its re-activation."

Although the project was originally pitched as including Konami's approval, Konami is currently offering no comment on the closure.

The original story appears below.

A group of amateur developers going by the name Outer Heaven is currently working on a remake of the original Metal Gear from 1988, and it recently received Konami’s blessing.

A lot of the time publishers who own the rights to old games send cease-and-desist letters when they hear about something like this (Square Enix shutting down the Chrono Trigger remake Chrono Resurrection comes to mind), but Outer Heaven recently announced it got word from Konami that it’s free to continue its work under one condition: Outer Heaven can’t make a profit or accept donations for the project.

The post to the project’s Moddb (via Game Informer) page also says that Outer Heaven received another email stating that “if the project goes well and there will be public interest in it, Konami will surely get to know this and consider further step accordingly."

That sounds a little ominous, but Outer Heaven is moving ahead with development. If you’re a fan of the original game, Outer Heaven is looking to expand its team with level designers, texture artists, voice actors, and more. Head to its Moddb page to see exactly what it needs, how to get involved, and more of the project’s early assets.

Yes it is, don't pull that Disney bullshit.  You cant say something awesome is going to happen and then cancel it.  It's happening no matter what.

i guess kojima is planning to do the remake himself that's why they told them to stop the project

This report's update is false. The game IS still happening. That page did get deleted but the project has NOT been canceled.

Simple:  They got intimmidated by the exposure.  Nothing wrong with that.

Well then.

That's...unfortunate?

I wouldn't completely say it has been shelved since it's possible it could come back. That, and we don't know the cause as to why it may have ceased development. I'm still somewhat skeptical that this has actually stopped, but we may find out soon enough.

and konami enters the blacklist

no money from me anymore

Then again the team behind the remake might have stopped because having the project taken from them from konami is a really painfull idea. ummmm yeah, if thats the case, still, bye bye konami

Looking at the L4D2 fan made games, this doesn't bother me too much.....

Dirty dogged by Konami. You'd think Konami is the US all the sudden...

I'm guessing someone who wasn't in position to give them the OK did so, and then a higher-up got wind and made Konami backtrack on their previous support.

If I'm wrong and Outer Heaven stopped this because they won't make money, that's a mistake. If they had confidence in the final product, it would have been the perfect thing to put on their resume to show off their skills. It's possible they could have got picked up to work for a company like Konami down the road.

Not getting money from it so now they don't want to do it..

This is not the first time a fan made game has been ditched. I'm pretty sure there is more games which end up no one touching it and leave it abandoned.

This honestly doesn't surprise me. I've seen several projects like this (that stupid MLP fighting game comes to mind) where the people behind the source are like "yeah bro, you got this, pour some more blood, sweat, and tears into it for a little while.... snicker..." and then later they just say "oh by the way, meet my friend mr. copyright claim." The only thing that I didn't see coming was this project being stopped so soon. I figured they'd wait until Outer Haven was almost done and THEN tell them no.

If I ever make a fan project and the owners of the property tell me they approve I'm just going to stop working on it right there and save myself some heartache. Maybe that's what they did.

Anyone confirm if Konami gave them the OK in the first place?  Maybe the people behind this mod lied?

It had to end. If they continued with this they probably would have been shut down. Major corporations won't pass up on money.

I played mg1 and mg2 for the first time awhile back despite being a fan of the mgs series for quite a while, I must say for what they were they really had a pretty good story with a real mgs feel to it, given how old you have to appreciate the gameplay as well which was also good given its time, but yea its a crucial part of the MGS timeline and a remake of both would definitely be welcome, as soon as they finish giving us a game about The Boss

If the story is as good as something from Kojima and Hayter voices Solid, I'm sold.

So there IS a way around the "defend it or lose it" trademark clause.

I hope they get David Hayter to voice solid snake that would a a giant middle finger towards hideo Kojima

LOVE the gameplay in the original Metal Gear. It's surprising how closely it resembles gameplay in MGS only with flat 8 bit graphics.

the new MGS games are nothing compared to that ...

well, I hope HD does not just mean a iphone version of an outdated 8bit game with high res graphics

EmanuelI I understand your not all too bright but that doesn't mean something bad. That means Konami might take them on as devs and publish their work. Which is win win.

I mean seriously mate, think for a second before you type. Konami is TOTALLY going to give their blessing and then do something bad to them if it gets popular....right.....use your brain dammit lol

Why exactly? Because they didn't, get to mooch on another's creation?

@Cherubas Or if the owners approve, put it to contract and add a clause that says that once the contract has been signed by both parties, the project cannot be DMCA'd or blocked from release for a limited time, yet add escape clauses to get around obstructive IP laws like the trademark defend-or-lose-it clause. There's always a way around obstacles.

Didnt they provide the emails to Kotaku? Real shame if Konami changed their mind on the project, was really looking forward to seeing this.

@willjohnboy Oh for goodness sake...

David Hayter always voiced Solid Snake. Why do people get so up in arms and confuse the two different characters? I seriously don't understand.

@Malaphisis You mean the amateur devs? They're lucky Konami is nice enough to let them work on the project. If they make something of quality, they'll get paid.

@chyll Well then, "I'm afraid I've got some bad news!" This is not a remake of MGS. It'll be a reboot of the original Metal Gear. MGS definitely  deserves a current tech reboot though, Either way, MG is where it all began. I'm looking forward to this remake

Soooo you call him stupid because he said that it's a little omnious? Well if only he knew, that you knew konamis full intentions personally, he would have consulted you.

It's business mate, a lot of trash can happen in this situation, and they can easily take this whole remake from them if they don't accept the next step. Its a little omnious, make sure you read both words, 'little' omnious.

Think before you type. (Or call someone stupid)

PETERAKO
PETERAKO

@_williamwallace No, but because this malicious intent quite possibly exists. In any case you gotta wonder whats up with japanese devs. western devs seem more content with letting fan made projects flurish, but japanese will fall all over it like piranhas.

@rhcpfan06 "...word from Konami that it’s free to continue its work under one condition: Outer Heaven can’t make a profit or accept donations for the project."

-who is to say that it wasn't Outer Heaven the one changing its mind? who would work in such a project knowingly that they wont see a penny in the end?

rhcpfan06
rhcpfan06

Why would that make any sense? They had their foot in the door to work with one of the largest gaming companies in the world, who in the right mind would change their mind?

According to their twitter it's been ceased until further notice and that they should have answers tomorrow, sounds more like Konami's doing to me.

@DanielL5583 @Dredcrumb9 @willjohnboy But Hayter voiced Naked Snake/Big Boss when he was a young man, whereas in The Phantom Pain Big Boss has aged naturally so it makes sense to use Kiefer Sutherland rather than Hayter this time around, which then leads into Richard Doyle for MGS4.
