Upcoming PC MMO WildStar gets an open beta this week

You can play Carbine's new MMO May 8-18 and advance through level 30.

Want to try out WildStar, the upcoming PC MMO from a team for former Blizzard designers, before its release later this year? You're in luck, as developer Carbine Studios has announced that it will hold an open beta for WildStar beginning May 8 and running through May 18.

Starting Thursday, you can visit the WildStar open beta page and request a key. If you've already participated in another WildStar beta event, you're already good to do. The WildStar beta lets you advance through the game up to level 30.

To mark the release of the WildStar open beta, Carbine Studios will host a 30-minute livestream at its Twitch channel on Thursday starting at 11 a.m. PDT. Developers will provide a "state of the game" update, talk about why they think WildStar will shake up the MMO space, and answer fan questions.

A second WildStar livestream will be held on Friday, May 9, also starting at 11 a.m. PDT. Developers will talk about the challenges of getting WildStar ready for release, provide a first look at higher level open beta content, and even potentially reveal "post launch content gameplay." The WildStar team will also field questions from social media.

WildStar launches June 3 for PC, and it went gold last month. The game's business model is a hybridized. Carbine Studios will sell a monthly subscription for $15, while you can also use an in-game item called C.R.E.D.D. to earn game time. You can do this through buying it from other players using in-game gold or you can purchase it directly from Carbine Studios at the WildStar website for $20.

To cheap to hire voice actors/paragraphs of text I don't care to read+childish humor/stupid animations+shift to run=me logging off.

The game was decent when I tried it 2 weeks ago. Combat is somewhat fresh.

Too bad it's PC-only and I can't stand mouse + KB gaming anymore.

Game looks EXACTLY like Wow, down to the textureless graphics and character/environment art. No thanks.

I only started really looking in to wildstar a few days ago. I had previously dismissed it as a wow clone. However, I can now see that it is much more than that. I am seriously considering picking it up and cannot wait to try it this Thursday.

Nice to know, I'm certainly willing to try anything that is free.

So hybridized means you can either pay $15 thru the website or $20 if you want to pay in-game?

So there's a $5 convenience charge to pay in-game rather than thru the web portal?

@Chikatilo007"Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up." - C.S.Lewis.

I think you might be thinking of Star Citizen.

@Link3301 Could you share some attractive features you learned about the game? I've checked out the official website, Wiki, and a few press previews. I have found indications of fun but no good first hand account of why this game stands out to someone, other than the whacky fun-ness.

The purpose of credd is to sell it to other players for gold and then they can use it for their subscription. It pretty much cuts out the gold spammers while increasing the amount of legitimate users.

@iMpLuX  You can pay a normal sub with a recurring charge to your credit card for $15/month or you can opt to buy CREDD from other players in-game for in game gold or buy CREDD from the website for $20.  When you redeem 1 CREDD you get 30 days of game time.  This system allows you to pay for the game by playing and earning gold if you wish to do so or pay with a sub.  The developers have stated that buying CREDD with real money would cost more than a monthly sub.

Basically, you can pay 15 dollars from the site to add game time to your account or you can pay 20 dollars to get a cred token in game which can either be used to add game time to your account or be sold to other players for in game gold.

In a nutshell, its a game legal way of buying gold. Eve online uses this model too.

@iMpLuX  I'm guessing the currency can be used for other things. For instance, it also mentioned you can buy it from other players, so if you buy $20 worth of CREDD and spend $15 of it on a the subscription you can then sell the other $5 worth to another player for in game gold.

@iMpLuX  pretty sure u can use cred in other ways and u can earn cred playen the ga,e as well. most likely does not expire at months end spo it carries over

@Link3301 Yes, you can have graphics without textures applied. You now owe me $5 for the lesson.

It has a greater freedom of movement, allowing it to be better incorporated into fight mechanics, and tactics. You cann rolll, double-jump, etc.

It also has no tab-targeting, you have to aims attacks yourself.

There is also player housing.

The path systems allows player to further customize their character beyond their class by giving then access to various exclusive things, such as secret areas and monsters, machine-building, or special lore info. Players can the. Use things for themselves and their party members.

The game also is supposed to be pretty challenging and have 40 man raids.

War plots are also a cool feature. It allows the player to participate in 40 vs 40 battles where players build a base with traps and other stuff. You can even put in a raid boss. Then you have to get through the enemies base before they get through yours.

@soccerpzn @Link3301  All WoW fanboys claim everything is a WoW clone. Yet all MMo's are just a interactive representation of DnD. Let's see...crappy gfx...check. Lack of voice acting...check. Dialogue very few will read...check. Redundant mechanics...check. Grinding...double check. Complaints of lag...triple check. PvE and PvP...check. A ridiculous number of buttons...check. See, they're all the same. The same regurgitated game over and over.

Link3301

No, it just this one has a lot of similarities to WoW.

Pwnslaught

@bfeinberg @Bhemont  It is though. Just because you dismiss something outright because you feel the graphics are not up to par is pretty redundant.
