Unreal Tournament III dated for Xbox 360

Epic Games fragfest makes its belated arrival on Microsoft's console July 7 with new split-screen play, maps, and characters.

by

Back in February, Epic Games president Mike Capps lamented the unfortunate timing of Unreal Tournament III's launch for the PC and PlayStation 3. Released toward the tail end of the "FPS Christmas of All Time," the latest in Epic Games' first-person shooter series was competing against The Orange Box, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and Crysis, not to mention fall releases like BioShock and Halo 3, to name just a few high-profile entries in the genre.

Now Epic's latest shooter might be getting a second lease on life. Unreal Tournament III publisher Midway has announced that the Xbox 360 edition of the game would be arriving in stores July 7. The game will be released in Europe on July 4.

While owners of Microsoft's system have had to wait a half-year longer for the game, they are getting more features and content as a result. In addition to a new two-player split-screen mode, the game will come with five new maps, two new characters, all previously released downloadable content from the PS3 and PC editions, and a video preview of Epic's next Xbox 360 game, Gears of War 2.

How could his mother account for 1% of the world's population? Darkride666 is an idiot though. Keyboard and mouse is worse for a FPS than a controller period! A controller is much more robust and less awkward to use. There is easily enough buttons on a controller for an FPS and there is no possible advantage to using a keyboard and mouse. For example, FPS games are fast paced online unlike RTS games and it is easy to hit a wrong button on a keyboard during a game session which could be a costly mistake. With so few buttons on a controller compared to a keyboard, this isn't an issue! Also, you only aim with one joystick and move with the other!

MetalMan300 "No, darkride66, it is an opinion. Ive always been able to play better with a controller." No, it's not just an opinion. :) I don't care how good you are with the standard controllers with a FPS, you will have your ass handed to you with a nice sympathy card by a FPS fan skilled at using a mouse and keyboard any day of the week. A mouse is by far better suited for precise and quick aiming with one hand compared to two joysticks controlling your x/y axis separately with two hands. It's irritating to even surf the web with joystick over a mouse. Personally, I prefer the consoles controllers as well, but only because I can't use a mouse and keyboard while I'm laying sprawled out on my basement couch.

Eh, I traded away my PS3 copy a few days ago... the game is alright, there's just a ton of other great shooters out there that are leaps and bounds better than this game. The multiplayer just doesn't compare to games like COD4 and the single player experience is a joke, particularly when weighed against single player juggernauts like Bioshock.

Could someone answer one question for me how is it that half the people leaving comments seem to think this game was bad and, the other half think its one of the best FFPs ever made? I remember playing the PC version and, didnt find any issues with it.

No, darkride66, it is an opinion. Ive always been able to play better with a controller, but other people can do well with a keyboard. Its really just personal preference. And 360 still get keyboard and mouse support as well as user mods, which will all ship on the game disc. And thank you namdead01, it looks sah-weet!

@ _guenter_26. You're right. You don't need keyboard and mouse support, but to say a controller is better than keyboard and mouse for FPS, that's not an opinion, that's just ignorant.

For all the Xbox fans..i hope you have fun with this one. PS3 version is amazing.

darkride66 You dont need keyboard and mouse support for an FPS on a console, a controller is much better to use. And it would have come out earlier if they added just extra content, they probably fixed the problems they made for the PS3 version.

Epic has taken soo long in releasing this game that i'm not sure i even want it now. When it came out on PS3 and PC i was soo anticipating it that the novelty of the game has seemed to of worn off after this long time waiting. It will probuarly a gr8 game n all but i would of expected something a bit extra than just a few more maps a extra charecter or two and split screen.

andrew_ribbons said "This will be awesome. They've really put effort into releasing a version i'll feel is worthy of the IP's reputation, rather than the slop released for PC and PS3." So, adding 5 new maps and a couple more playable characters is what will elevate this title above "slop". Dude, you need to check your priorities. Yeah, they really put in the extra effort to make the 360 version "special". You know, because user mods and keyboard and mouse support just ruined it on the PC and PS3.

unless it will be ground and i mean groundbreaking , it will be EPIC fail , the pc version was very bad , unless EPIC will improve this by alot and not just give the gamers more "maps" to think it will buy the gamers, it could be one of the best games in 08 ,but it its a big if.

This is really good news! I havn't played this title on either platforms yet but i'll probably get this for the 360 for sure.

This will be awesome. They've really put effort into releasing a version i'll feel is worthy of the IP's reputation, rather than the slop released for PC and PS3. I should know, i bought the PC version and traded it in 2 months later. It was just a sloppy job i felt. Here's hoping for some good reviews on the 360 version, Midway could certainly use a highly reviewed and well selling version, here's holding out for 1 million or more sold!

So I can spend $40, get the PS3 version, with user map maps and keyboard and mouse support, along with free DLC from Epic rather then having to pay for it like they did with Gears and might end up doing with this game on 360 in the future, or I can spend $60, get little to no graphical updates, loose those two features that are on PS3, get split screen, five new maps, those PS3/PC DLC maps which are all free on PSN anyway, two new character models, and a video I'll just get off of Youtube. Most of my friends on Live won't be getting this game anyway, and I'd assume the same for most people on this board, so I wouldn't take that into consideration anyway. And now that the PS3 is getting trophies and in game XMB, those two things wouldn't be taken into consideration either. Yea, I think you guys know which one is the better value. As a side note, UT3 sold 470K units to date on PS3, and more on PC through retail and digital distribution, so the sales actually haven't been that bad for it.

@ _guenter_26. Um, neither is worse? Personally I don't think the wait for either of these is an issue. I've got a stack of great games that I have no time to play. If I have to wait 9 months before I can get UT3 on my 360, I'm sure I could find more than enough games to pass the time. This is not a concern to me. I like the split screen on the 360 version, but I can't believe they don't allow user created mods. At any rate, I didn't buy this on my PS3 because of the lack of split screen, and I won't be buying it on the 360 because I refuse to pay extra to play games I just shelled out $50-60 bucks for.

darkride66 It svcked for the PS3 because Sony pissed off Epic with "The next-generation of gaming starts when we say so." So Epic goes and fixes it for the 360 and adds extra content that yall have to download and pay to get. : ) Bioshock came out a year ago but this is only months old. So which is worse?

darkride66
darkride66

Why would anyone want to play this game? It's months old. Everyone has already played it that wanted to. It sucks that you're all getting sloppy seconds. Oh wait, are we talking about UT3? I was just channeling an Xbot talking about Bioshock. My mistake!

Ummm, Unreal III has always, always been planned to come out on the 360. Don't you remember they had a video of it on marketplace and then took it down when they decided to make it ps3 timed exclusive AFTERWARDS? Smart, uninformed people here.

digi_dragon was absolutely 100% correct. UT3 was first and foremost designed specifically for the PS3. As a direct result of the Silicon Knights lawsuit and all the bad press they (and trickle down effect, Sony) were getting over the fact that a promised native PS3 version was nearly two years later than promised (and the mod issue that I will address later), UT3 was intended very early to be a PS3 game with ports to PC and 360. UT3 was little more than a tech demo to prove that UE3 could be adequately squeezed onto the PS3. It didnt sell on PS3 quite simply because of COD4, while the PC version was pretty much universally rejected because of the way the game was gimped so as to not highlight the shortcomings of the PS3 hardware (graphics toned down for the PC version so as to not highlight visual differences....gameplay slowed to nearly a crawl to allow the PS3 "gpu" to keep up). On the subject of mods, that is one of the major reason why Epic went to a Sony-centric attitude. XBL has specific rules that nothing gets into the network unless it has been certified to be bug (as in console breaking or network crashing) and virus/malware free first. Epic wanted that rule suspended just for them, and when MS told them that the rule would indeed apply to them too, they took their toys to someone elses yard. There is no issue with MS wanting to "charge" for the user mods....its just that they cant be on XBL until they have been checked...Epic didnt like being told no, so then Mark Rein's mouth started flapping. From the way he treated the 360 community and from the way he and Cliffy treated the PC community, I will never buy another Epic product as long as I'm a gamer.

"f--- this game, after all the crap they talked about xbox live do they really think because this game tanked on ps3 they can port it to us to make a quick buck. don't buy this game, the original creators never intended on 360 users to play this, they just lost so much money they are relying on us to bail them out." ---digi_dragon324 This is not accurate. They didn't want to release on the 360 because they didn't want to compete with the Halo 3 release. This fact was well documented last year. They probably didn't expect to be flanked by COD4 & Crysis either...a triple whammy on their franchise. What I'm looking at is that they are giving us all the extras & fixes for free. No extra charges. So it seems that if you get the game later than the rest, they give you more for the platform you're on. Kind of like what they did with Mass Effect's PC release. My biggest complaint is that there are just too many dang games coming out. I could buy them all but the bulk of them will just sit on the shelf as I can only play one at a time in the limited amount of free time I have.

why don't their games have 4-player split screen?!?! like, i like to play offline with my friends... i guess the 360 can't either handle the unreal3 engine or the devs can't tweak it very well...

To digi_dragon324: You are wrong. If you would actually go and do some research, you'll find that Epic has always stated that this game would be coming to the Xbox 360. The game was only a "Timed Exclusive" for the PS3. I can't wait to get my hands on this game. I've been excited about it for a couple of years now, as I have always been a huge fan of the Unreal series! It's been pushed up from August to now July, and I know many fans of the game will be happy to know that it'll be arriving sooner than expected. It looks like I'll have a great game waiting for me to pick up at GameStop, after I get home from my vacation! Good times await! I can't wait to start fragging in July! ^_^
