Undertow gratis on Xbox Live

Xbox 360 maker apologizes for holiday online-service troubles by making Chair-developed shooter free for five days.

by

After many Xbox Live users spent their unhappy holidays battling a multitude of problems with logging into and using the online gaming service, Microsoft apologized for the gaff and said it would be offering a free Live Arcade game to all members as a make-good.

Today Microsoft detailed what the game will be and when gamers can actually get it. Beginning next Wednesday, January 23, at 2 a.m. and continuing through the following Sunday, January 27, Xbox Live users will be able to download Chair Entertainment Group's Undertow free of charge. Ordinarily available for 800 Microsoft points ($10), Undertow is an action combat game with 15 single-player levels as well as multiplayer action where up to 16 gamers take on different classes and races in an attempt to assert dominance over the waves.

Undertow is rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older.

5-days free would be 24 hours x 5 would be Monday at 2am. Unless there is someplace in the world that doesn't have 24-hour days.

my internet has been down for the last 3 weeks (router problems but live still works)...and downloaded this gmae by complete luck. My friend who acually bought the game for some reason mentioned how great it was, so i went to check it out only to see it was free. I figured it was the "make-up" game that microsoft promised. I really wouldnt have logged on to check it out if i didnt see that. WEll its a great game. Im glad they didnt jsut give us a piece of crap game. Thanks microsoft

Why hasn't gamespot themselves reviewed this game. I have seen them review crap, so that couldn't be the reason.

I downloaded and have had a go at this, it's really good, based on the Unreal Engine too, so it's not a cheap job. From what i'm hearing about people getting their points refunded if they already owned the game, that's great service. This is just one of the many reasons 360 gamers can be proud of their platform :)

This is fair I guess. It's free so you can't really complain. It would have been better if they provided free Gold for 2 weeks or something, because that's roughly how long the service was down.

"BPDecPimp Called customer service and they refunded my 800 points easily" That is cool. I can respect that.

I had previously bought the game... I just called...and without a problem they refunded back my 800 points...i was playing mass effect offline during the holiday time...and i understand they didnt have to do what they did, But this is how you know its a great service, And i rather pay $50 a year for something like this then a free Psn network which lags consistently. Thanks M$.

I think I will download this game tonight, it looks good and it's free. X-Box Magazine gave it a 9/10. So I will check this out......

As multiple people have already stated, call their customer support and they will reimburse you for having purchased Undertow already. Major Nelson has already stated this. My personal advice, call them on a WEEKEND, do not make any attempt to do so during a weekday, as they use call centres in god knows where, and i dont beleive the employees there are actually authorised to do a whole lot. I tried for weeks to cancel my XBL gold account to switch back to 3month cards. Much to my dismay i could not get any foreign call center people to actually perform this simple task. Called on a saturday on the off chance, and boom, i got an american woman who understood english very well, and although she did ask why i was cancelling, and if i would reconsider, did actually cancel my account in about 5 minutes. So yeah, call on a saturday would be my advice, and ask for some reimbursement.

TO PEOPLE WHO ALREADY BOUGHT THIS GAME... Such as myself, should contact Microsoft on Wednesday, to inform them that I have already purchased Undertow, and they will give me (us) something else for our troubles... hopefully 800 points, or something to that nature. This is not posted on Gamespot, but is posted on IGN.com, as well as Major Nelson's Xbox 360 Blog. So if you already purchased Undertow call Microsoft Wednesday!

o snap, i didn't even like the demo... but what the hey, it's free anyway, had no trouble during the holidays (XBL-wise i mean), so i'm gonna give it another try... thanks!

Wow, as I read the title, I got stoked that Tools - Undertow will be available to download for Rock Band, really quite weird, but thats what I thought, and when I opened it , first thoughts were" What the fu**? " Never heard of this game, whatever, I dont care anyway, il Just go back to hoping Tool will make it to Rock Band one day...

Major Nelson wrote that if you already have Undertow you should call Customer Support, they have you covered. Call and you will get your 800 points back.

I am frustrated by this move. I've already purchased Undertow, so in effect my frustrations during the holiday season are being ignored. I work quite a lot and don't have a whole lot of time to play Xbox Live. When I want to use it- a service I've paid for - on my down time during the holidays, I expect it to work. I'm very dissapointed in Microsoft and their lack of options for gamers who have already purchased this game. I'd rather get a free month or two of Xbox Live. Edit... I recently contacted Microsoft about this issue and the best information they could give me was- if there is another option in the future it will be on our Web site... keep posted. I asked for some solid information from someone, but the guy I was speaking with could barely speak English, making communicating with him beyond this statement impossible. I'm very dissapointed. I pay for internet and I pay my $50 a year for Xbox Live Gold. As a consumer product, I expect them to cater to the consumer. If Xbox Live was free I would be more forgiving, but I paid for it and expect to be able to play it at my own convenience. If not, I expect that issue to be addressed. Microsoft is slipping when it comes to alleviating this problem. They owe everyone who had a problem more than a $10 game. It may be $50 a year, but a majority of my playtime on it comes in the winter, especially during the holiday season. My loss of entertainment is weighed at a higher price than a game I may not even want to play (or in this case a game I already have).

We are lucky to get anything from MS. If you do the math: a month of XBL costs $4.16. MS is giving away a $10.00 game for an inconveinence that lasted around 2 weeks.... thats $2.08 worth of down time. Even if I'm off in the math a little, you would need to be down for MORE THAN 2 MONTHS for this to be a fair deal for MS. I think they are being more than generous. And for all you out there who want 800MS points...... how does 175 pnts sound???? cause thats all the down time is worth! If I ran the company, we wouldn't get jack 5h1t! bunch of spoiled brats.......

for everyone who's xbox is under repair: see if you can hook up your HDD to a friends xbox and download it there while your xbox is being repaired...problem solved! :D

what a gippy. Can MS at least make it seem like they can give a quality product or give quality customer service? Apparently it's just to hard to ask. I think it should be a free game of your choice. Here is the kicker for MS IT WON'T COST THEM ANYTHING! The games are on there servers and stuff so why do they gotta act like it's hard to offer a free game? They pick if for us? Three rings of death, a million differ add-ons just made me jump ship to the other side :(

@Soupflakez " It would be good if MS would just credit 800 MS points to all Xbox Live accounts that are active. If you think about it it may be cheaper then making the game free on XBLA." Personally i played the demo and it I didnt like it that much, now im getting the game for free...LOL what a waste.

These "xbox live outages" never affected me at all, looking forward to another free game :)

I'm going to have to side with those wanting 800MS points. Letting us download a game that most of us already have or probably don't want is just a sloppy bandaid for what happened the first of this year. If you're pi$$ed about it drop Major Nelson an email. I for one wouldn't waste my time. People are going to be pi$$ed no matter what finally happens, and they'll still keep logging on to XBL. That's the monster that is MS. They know it, we know it, just get used to it. As for me... they can take Undertow and shove it up their shiney metal a$$es. Don't want it. But I'll keep loggin' in and playin' my COD4.

SteeleInd

Ugh. I played the Demo, and this game sucked. How about they give us 800ms points? It's really not difficult. They did it during the Xbox Live is 5IVE event. They gave all accounts that have been active for 5 years, 500 points. How about giving all accounts active for the last 6 months 800 points? Not too taxing.

HeathO, are you saying that PS3 has the same type of online service, that is just as good as Xbox LIVE? Are you RETARDED? You... you don't even understand what we pay for, do you? lol

red-orc

What kind of fkn argument is that?! ''Be thankful that MS even respects your loss and gives you a refund.'' If they would truly respect me as their paying customer and not take the chance to promote arcade games, they would give me my money back in form of 800 points instead of chosing something for my money that I think is worthless. It's a bad game to me and I just wouldn't spend my money on it. But fact is, that I'm doing it now indirectly.

SO, I pay for a service to be provided and when they fail to provide it to the same standard as another company who doesn't charge at all, I get a game. Attention Microsoft, 360 owners can only take so many kicks to the old coin purse. Get it together!!!

If you already have the game then call up Microsoft and ask if there is any sort of refund for Undertow. I'm sure they will refund you. They aren't stupid enough to consider a free game and just leave out those who already bought it. It would be good if MS would just credit 800 MS points to all Xbox Live accounts that are active. If you think about it it may be cheaper then making the game free on XBLA.

Yeah with Halo 3, COD4 and TF2, as well as the always present Gears of War, I have been on shooter overload, I dont even really play Halo anymore, so Im not sure I'll even play Undertow at all, but you can be sure I will take it for free!! Have to agreee about the time limit being bunk, also are they even gonna tell people about it over XBL?

Not a bad choice. I was planning on buying this game anyways. Though i feel bad for those who already bought it, its one of the best XBL games out there
