Undertow Elects XBL expansion pack

Chair Entertainment's aquatic side-scrolling shooter splashes onto Xbox Live with five single-player missions, new playable race, four maps for $5.

by

If there's anything positive to be said about the widespread Xbox Live outages experienced during the busy 2007 holiday season, it's that Chair Entertainment's aquatic side-scrolling shoot-'em-up made its way into a good many gamers' homes. Undoubtedly hoping to capitalize on Microsoft gifting the game to all XBL users for a limited time, Chair Entertainment announced today it would be releasing Undertow's first expansion pack--Path of the Elect--this Wednesday.

Available for 400 Microsoft points ($5), Path of the Elect packs on an addition five levels to Undertow's original 15-stage single-player campaign, and introduces a new playable race, the Elect. Whereas Undertow's campaign primarily focused on the struggle between Atlanteans and marines, the new expansion provides a deeper glimpse at the conquest-driven alien race. The Elect will also be playable in the game's 16-player competitive multiplayer mode, which itself will be expanded with four new maps.

Undertow: Path of the Elect joins Capcom and A.C.R.O.N.Y.M. Games' overhead shooter Rocketmen: Axis of Evil on the Xbox Live Arcade this week. Rocketmen will be available on both XBL and the PlayStation Network for $10.

Wow.. I completely missed this expansion. Undertow is one of those under-rated games that simply did not get noticed due to bad timing. When it went free, people realized it was worth the money. I think more people should follow suit and offer expansions and even "quickies" at the $5 price point. 400 Microsoft Points is a steal. I only wish Modern Warfare 2 offered their map packs around that price or close to it...

Blackace, you couldn't be more right. I didnt want this game until it was free, but when I got it I realized it was a great game, and this expansion is definately worth the $5 in my opinion (OXM said it was excellent). And no, the game isn't for everyone. And Im not buying GTA IV or MGS4 when they come out because they arent the kind of games for me.

They think people will pay for a game that nobody wanted until it was free? That makes a lot of sense.

I've had my 360 for a while now. I've yet to get the harddrive. But sweet DLC like this justifies getting it. Next payday, 3/14/08, it's on my "piss-away-the-rest-of-my-check" list.

Undertow is a pretty awesome game. That fact that I got it for FREE during that 4 days period makes me want to try the expansion. For people who didn't get Undertow for FREE, I can understand maybe not want to spend the extra $5 for this content, but others who got the game for FREE shouldn't have any problem getting it. I'm sure many people who are hating on it, haven't even played it yet. lol!! The game isn't for everyone. I'm sure not everyone is going to buy MGS4, GTA IV or StarCraft 2 either. Not a big deal.

I got the pretty cool game for free so it would feel like I'm getting a discount on the expansion. Anything to expand the enjoyment of the game.

Ummm... If this was free, I still wouldn't download it...

Man...nobody even wanted this game for free. Do they really think anyone is going to pay hard-earned MS points on it for an expansion pack? This is IT: The beginning of expansion packs that no one cares about...

I think I'll pass on this one.

Guys stop hatin' on this expansion. You guys are all saying that, oh microsoft is just trying to get money from us after saying this was "free" Well news guys, for one it was free and you dont HAVE to buy the expansion. Secondly, it isn't microsoft wanting money. Just think of how many game sales these devolopers lost after it went free for that weekend. This is just their way of trying to earn money from a game that should have seen sales anyway.

Very clever Microsoft, give us a game for free to 'say sorry'...then release additional content for it to try and suck us in and earn yourselves a bit of cash. Well I'm not buying it, I didn't like Undertow at all!

I see now, Grende. I much appreciate your explanation. And no, s3IFc0nTr0l, as long as you conduct yourself reasonably you won't get any ire from me. I will not apologize for the accusations but if you think you are exempt, then maybe you are. There are far too many posers and haters who don't give things a chance or haven't even played. There are even more people who think that saying how much they hate something without explanation is reasonable. Of the opponents to this game, Breakerbun is likely the most reasonable and most should follow his example. He explained why he didn't like it in a reasonable manner. Dude, on the other hand, is the example of who I target.

i loved this game. I dont see why it gets so much hate. It wasnt bad by any means and it was a rather steal getting it for free since they coulda gave away some rather bad game instead of this. I could also understand the price of the expansion seeing that it was a $10 pretty much given away for free so theres nothing wrong with them charging a lil extra then normal to try and make some sort of profit seeing that they ended up losing a lot.

AncientDozer, DRM is for copy protecting digital media. Generic_Dude isn't really making any sense. Probably just some fanclub troll that read IGN's whiny article (another in a long list from IGN that bashes MS and the 360). What IGN is crying about is that in some cases, when someone replaces their 360, they have a problem using DLC that was linked to their old unit. The DRM MS uses links the content you buy to both the HDD it was downloaded on and the user's account. It's just a way to keep people from stealing. It only affects digitally downloaded media, not games/movies on a disc. The problem a few have had is that when they get a refurb/replacement unit, their DLC is still linked to the old HDD that they traded in. In some instances, although not all as it works fine for many, when the consumer tries re-downloading (for free as MS keeps a record of all transactions) the previously purchased material, it still doesn't work. In this case, you will have to call MS and have them attach the serial number of your new unit to your live account. They do do this and it does work. In the past, MS has asked consumers sending in their unit for repairs/replacement to hold on to their HDD. This solves the problem for most as well. Again, it's not even remotely a big deal and definately wouldn't cause any reasonable thinking person to not play retail games (on disc) because it ONLY relates to DLC.

I think I am okay with not buying this because Undertow was okay....... Also you can get great real xbox 360 games for about that, like GRAW, at certain places of course but still.

I cannot understand how so many can whine about this game. Considering most people got it for 0 dollars whats the big freaking deal. I paid for my version, and its probably the best live game i have. Carry on like spoilt children...

the reasons undertow was bad was the fact i could bearly see my person even in hd and because it had bad controls

Wow. Why does everyone hate this game? It's better than a lot of stuff I have played on xbla . I think it is a good arcade game but I wouldn't pay S5 for new content.

beakerbun

Undertow could have been a great XBLA game, but its terrible AI and incredible difficulty make it more frustrating than fun. Chair, you almost had something good here but you fell short. I wanted to like this game but couldn't.

polsci1503

I thought it was decent little game... not sure why it's getting slammed. It's not an easy game, and can be frustrating, especially to see the little guys you're trying to shoot, but it's a nicely designed arcade game in my opinion.

arrowj

@dn3datomiced- I agree...why so much hate? I mean, look some developer put alot of work into it and took a shot. If I know how to code, I'd give it a shot too. If you don't agree, no problem just don't buy it...but also don't rip it just to have someting to say. I thought the game was dark and just o.k. game-play wise. There are probably others who dug it. Gamespot carries some clout and some of these guys read these posts for insight as to what they could improve.

AncientDozer

What exactly is DRM? Go on, leave or don't play or whatever. I don't need to hear your sob stories and your whining. Take your spoiled, weak stomachs elsewhere where someone might pat you on the back and ask you about your day. As for me, I'll enjoy the game and the expansion because it was a fun experience and amused me when I didn't feel like engrossing me in a larger, deeper game. God. Kids these days are spoiled brats. I remember when pacman and Kong entertained people and that's all they needed. Today it seems like a game needs to last a year and have graphics that blow your mind and a blockbuster movie script before anyone may concede that it could be good. You get what you pay for, people; it's an arcade game. Not a big release shelf-clearing game

I'll only buy it if it expands the achievements too.

400 points? Thats how much some full games cost. Not to mention does anyone even really play this game to the extent that they love it soo much that they are dying for more maps? Not to mention does anyone play this without using a magnifying glass? Everything is soo small ~_~

At no charge, this game was a bad deal. And yeah, the DRM issue = no buy for me as well. Hell, I barely even use my 360 anymore due to that swindle.

I'm not paying more for an expansion than I did for the full game. Funny thing is I didn't get Undertow for free the way everybody else did, I got it from an episode of On the Spot when they gave away some codes.

Argh! More undertow yukciness! Take it away. It's not like this game was all that good to begin with. Then Microsoft gives it away as a free gift, to blight the consoles and now they're making an expansion? Grrr... Gimme an expansion for Omega Five or any other good XBLA game, not this crud.
