Uncharted PS4 writer leaves Naughty Dog

Writer Amy Hennig has left Naughty Dog; was working on Uncharted for the PlayStation 4.

by

Writer Amy Hennig has departed from developer Naughty Dog, a report which surfaced on IGN revealed. She was writing and leading development for the Uncharted game on PlayStation 4.

The news was later confirmed by Sony, who issued the following statement:

"We can confirm that Amy Hennig has left Naughty Dog. Amy has made significant contributions to the game industry and we appreciate all she has done for Naughty Dog. The development timeline of Uncharted will not be impacted."

According to the report, Hennig had her last day at Naughty Dog on March 3. She was allegedly "forced out" by Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley, who served as creative director and game director respectively on The Last of Us.

Hennig has worked at Naughty Dog for over ten years, leading development for the Uncharted series as head writer and creative director.

Uncharted for the PS4 made it into headlines earlier this week when some alleged test videos were "leaked" online. The videos have since been confirmed as fake.

Damn, it sounds like a lot of people have respect for her. I mean this "forced out" thing hasn't really been confirmed, right? I saw the Naughty Dog announcement saying how it was "regrettable news" that she left. It sounds like they respect her too. I think people just want to know "why".

If they were going with a different direction and she wasn't feeling it then majority ruled. In any case she wasn't "forced out" but decided to leave because perhaps she disagreed with the direction and couldn't find ways to write for it. It's seriously either that or personal conflicts within the office. If she's not commenting on it either then it's either A. The first thing, which is just business. Or B. A personal matter that doesn't need to go public, especially if she is looking for a job at another studio.

We'll see but I think they are trying to do the respectful thing, I'm not sure. Them both being quiet and saying it is what it is could be the best for both parties. She may rather not spite others and cause a ruckus, in the case others won't hire her when it's likely she can land a job simply on her merits.

Was she the lead writer in Uncharted 3? The story beats were eerily similar to the Tin Tin movie. I've always wondered if she was "inspired" by the Tin Tin stories. Uncharted 2 was the best in the series.

Sad. Amy Hennig is extremely talented. I give her credit for all the subtle humour and characterisation of all the characters in the Uncharted games, supervising the motion cap stuff and audio dialogue. The personalities of all the excellent female characters were almost certain shaped by her direction. I'm hoping we don't loose the female humour in Uncharted with guys doing the creative direction. An example of the stuff I'm taking about is when your playing U3 coop as Elena. When she picks up a stash of grenades, she says "mmm, I love these" like she's fingering through box of chocolates and picking out her favourite. You cannot help but laugh even after hearing it 100 times, because it's so innocent and yet very sinister at the same time. Subtle but very clever. Someone else will grab her talent, no doubt about that.

This is the Amy Henning gamers think of when they hear "female game writer"

This is what the Amy Henning that writes games actually looks like.

Sorry gamers, when ever you hear a woman's voice on CoD you better question if that is a 10 yr old boy then get your head in check and realize the spike tv gaming girls are paid models. There is a reason she is playing CoD on Sat  night.

Well at least we will know the reason why if Nathan Drake suddenly starts acting like a sexist a-hole.

I encourage anyone who is sad with this news to tweet naughty dog and let them know you are disappointed in this decision they mad of forcing Amy Hennig out.  It won't bring her back but it'll let them know what a big mistake they made. https://twitter.com/Naughty_Dog

Sad to see this happen. Amy did her thing with the Uncharted series. Hopefully, she will land at another studio and continue the good work she has been doing all these years.

What the shit?! Forced out? How can that be? Did Wells and Balestra not have any influence on the matter?

This sucks beyond belief. Hennig made no small contribution to making Uncharted as great as it is.

Good luck to her. I'm sure she won't have any trouble finding a job worthy of her talent.

Man she game Naughty Dog over ten years of her life/career and was "forced out," seems harsh to me. I know we don't know the circumstances of her release, but still this is surprising. Well maybe she will go back and work on the Legacy of Kain franchise, not likely but who knows.

Extreme talent just walked out their doors; I wish NaughtyDog and the Uncharted series the best of luck from this point forward.  Those past 3 console Uncharted titles will be difficult to follow.

I look forward to Amy's talents being applied elsewhere.  She won't have a hard time finding another job.

Very talented person in the games industry, I still have fond memories of Soul Reaver's excellent writing.

Best decision they could have made uncharted 2 was a stellar game but the third one started to overuse same mechanics. Of course you have the last of us that literally sh@t all over uncharted!! Good luck Amy but don't think you going to be that missed at naughty dog

She probably over heard Bruce and Neil making comments at the water cooler about how shit UC3's story was and how shit the PS4 version of UC's story was looking. She got butthurt, left and said she was "forced out" lol

then again, who knows? they probably straight up told her it was shit, rewrote some stuff, she got butthurt and left (Force out). lulz

Sounds to me like the smartest decision they could've made. Uncharted's story development is on par with, oh I don't know, Tomb Raider and Jax and Dexter... But now that the creators of the best video game ever made are in charge, it's got a chance. The Last of Us has more life and emotion packed into one scene than all the Uncharted games combined. I'm personally even more excited. Interesting that people see this as negative, when it's absolutely not at all. I'll chalk it up to xboners hatin.

She has quite the resume.  I'm sure she'll be fine.   However Uncharted was never really about the plot, just the compelling characters.   The plots have all really be quite bland.

Bring back Mark Cerny in Naughty Dog!!

This could affect Uncharted for ps4 and future Uncharted titles in a big way. One of the best aspects of the Uncharted franchise is it's storytelling and if they don't find a replacement with writing skills of the same caliber or higher it would be bad.

Sucks she was forced out, but if there's anything we do know, it's that Neil Druckmann is a very competent writer.

leave??? he shoulda been fired after the first game . really enjoyed the first 1 but then the story got really boring. about half way threw i found myself wanting to skip every cut scene

So those two thought they were better than her and wanted the spot.

They will probably use her ideas still an claim the credit.

New endeavors is a common thing, however I don't believe she was forced out.

I just hope she stays in the industry.

At a AAA studio, making the kind of sweeping games she has shown she can make.

Indeed, Ms. Henning, if you are sending your resume to Bethesda and Bioware, I'll pay for the stamps.

Amy Hennig's departure is a loss for Naughty Dog. We're talking about the person who is responsible for the brilliance of the previous Unhcarted games and The Legacy of Kain series.

Didn't Naughty Dog hire someone in a similar role from one of Microsoft's studios? Either Bungie, 343, or the Fable studio I think. It was recently. Maybe it was a preemptive replacement.

@ninboxstation  seriously, its not that bad of a thing that she left. her scripts were decent but nothing extraordinary. we've seen stories like uncharted in movies like a gazzilion times. too bad that she was forced to leave after ten years though. i suspect its probably due to her unwillingness to bend to the whims of the higher ups.

MattPeters

@hadlee73 Hahahaha you're right because GameSpot will tell us this no matter what and use this reason as "proof"! I totally agree.

@hadlee73  and why uncharted starts selling a couple of more millions because of a new sexist a-hole Nathan :p

zedetach

@Albelnox0  to be fair, the uncharted series could use a new writer. i just recently played U3 and I must say it felt like exeperiencing a deja vu. U1 and U2 all over again with bits of clever writing here and there and even more dramatic cinematic scenes.

@C-THREE  The article hints at Neil Druckmann taking over. He was the writer for The Last of Us.

@nameaprice She is very talented.

The irony is that she might have been forced out because she wasn't pandering enough to SJWs. The same SJWs who complain about the lack of females making games.

@lostn  She's a lead programmer or something like that, not a director or writer.

@23Jarek23 According to her wikipedia entry she is Occupation - Video game writer and director.
