Uncharted 2 maps out 15 AIAS award noms

Assassin's Creed II, Modern Warfare 2, Batman also earn multiple nods; Activision CEO Bobby Kotick to deliver keynote address at ceremony-hosting summit next month.

The week after it picked up seven Game Developers Choice Award nominations, developer Naughty Dog has added a few more plumes to its cap. The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences has announced its finalists for the 13th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards, and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves leads the field with 15 nominations in 14 categories.

Nathan Drake celebrates Uncharted 2's 15 nominations with a little impromptu skanking.

The PlayStation 3-exclusive action adventure will be going up against stiff competition in many of those categories. The year saw a strong field of contenders receiving multiple award nods, with Assassin's Creed II (10 nominations), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (nine nominations), and Batman: Arkham Asylum (eight nominations) leading the pack. All of the aforementioned games are up for Overall Game of the Year, with Dragon Age: Origins rounding out the candidates for the show's top honor. Last year, that prize went to Media Molecule's PS3 platformer Little Big Planet.

This year's awards show will feature 27 categories, with three awards being doled out for the first time ever. The new categories are Portable Game of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Game Design, and Social Networking Game of the Year, which will see a municipal matchup between FarmVille and Farmtown. Comedian Jay Mohr will emcee the event for the fifth time, with the awards bring doled out as part of the AIAS's annual D.I.C.E. Summit on February 18 at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mohr won't be the only outspoken person on stage at the D.I.C.E. Summit. The event will also feature a keynote address from Activision CEO Bobby Kotick, who roiled the industry in 2009 by saying his company planned on bypassing consoles. The AIAS said the executive--who also said his goal was to "take all the fun out of making video games"--will talk "about how creative talent drives the video game industry."

@shii666 GTA, Diablo & Starcraft is famous 4 its originality, 4 the genre, so that's why many peoples "hyped" out! or maybe overated them!! :) Dynasty Warrior is just rip-off but for COD/MW2 (why are you comparing an RPG/Strategy with 1st person shooter) but whatever, COD series still great games! "multi-platform" too :D & Splinter Cell has a simulation, you do not get in the MGS series, btw MGS5 Rising is coming "multi-platform" I hope Raiden could give the different "styles" for MGS, but whatever "your choice", we have a different point of view..

@Ladiesman17 First of all, I do have a gaming capable P.C. upstairs at this instant. It is capable of running Crysis at full capacity (The framerate would not be full, but not bad either.) Second of all, I honestly don't like Diablo or Starcraft one bit. They bore me and make me wonder why I play them (But I still do. In all reality, they are no better than Dynasty Warriors or Call of Duty.) To be frank, the number of P.C. Exclusives I play is very low, as I generally enjoy console exclusives, more. (Not to say that I won't try them out; I mostly use my P.C. for online gaming since god forbid I would do that with consoles.) A third point: I was generalizing my comment at you who didn't like technical exclusives (The comment itself was kinda shortsighted, as well as mine) Even under the P.C. circumstance. I do like every single multi-platform game you mentioned (Not as much so as my exclusives) aside from Grand Theft Auto 4. (Very overrated in my opinion.) (And, I know some of those haven't been released yet, mind you.) Generally, I do not like Splinter Cell or even Tom Clancy games. (Mind you.) I suppose this conversation comes down to a feat of preference in this regard, so each to his own then. (Personally, I am about to get back to playing the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. N64, beat that. lol.)

@fps_d0minat0r well if it about capacity. PC users can have it from digital distribution, it doesn't matter if it about 100gb, I'm using 3 Terrabyte (it doesn't matter at all :) hahaha) PS3 didn't have any problem with this :) 360 can use multi-disc just like how "Lost Odyssey" did! with 4 DVD :) (that was sucks & again this game made "exclusively") I remember playing "Lost Planet" & "Call Of Juarez" with PCs & my friend's 360 using cross-platform (that was fun) capacity is not the main reason here,,

Ladiesman17
Ladiesman17

@TevoxZi The problem is not about Uncharted 2 (I think it might be good, well, I don't know) :) but how they make it "exclusive" that was bothering me. I already have the latest & high-end system on the PC, but why do I have to buy a Console. just for one game, give me good answers? & again, Consoles today are PC-based they are using, Hard Drive, Case, Motherboard, Processor (CPU), GPU (ATI or NVidia chipset), RAM, Fan & what's different? It's just corporate strategy (Microsoft & Sony) they make the user looks "fool" give me good answers? (again) :)

Ladiesman17
Ladiesman17

@shii666 first, I was a PC fans, Halo (bungie), Fable (lionhead) & Gears of wars (epic) originally came for the PC (especially HALO) & made "exclusively" that was sucks for us, PC Users. & what the hell, L4D (it's not even exclusive) I've playing MGS4, it good in terms of story & graphics, but gameplay "sucks", How could the old snake capable of carrying 100 guns & large cans. it's unbalanced between "reality" & "fantasy" it's just stupid (i hate to say this) :) Splinter Cell a lot better,, the answers is yes! I didn't like the (Exclusives) stuff, it was very selfish, there are many good games out there, who still supports multi-platform. like :) - Fallout 3 - Assasin's Creed 2 - Splinter Cell Conviction - Bioshock 2 - Mass Effect 2 - Grand Theft Auto 4 - Resident Evil 5 - & many more :D I wanted to ask you, are you gonna play Crysis (it's a lot better than Gears of War/MGS4), World In Conflict, The Sims 3, Dawn Of War 2, or maybe StarCraft 2 & Diablo 3, I bet you will not be, because it's on PC exclusive & not on your Consoles. You could say that, because you have the Consoles. & I bet (again) :) you are missing out on some of the greatest games too...

@ Ladiesman17 exclusives are a corporate strategy but more importantly, the exclusives can be optimised for its certain platform rather then devs being pressurised to make a game worthy of running on all systems. In this case the better systems suffer because the games have to be playable on the lower end ones. another downside of multiplats is developers cant even port games identically and considering most games never finish on time, their in a rush to make the ports leading to one system getting a lower quality product then the other. finally is the case of formats........blu-ray is capable of 54GB but becase DVD only does 18GB max, content is removed from games which affect the length of them.....for example final fantasy is cutting hours of the game........their not going to say it but obvisouly they would put in that content if DVD had the capacity. so in short, exclusives have a greater chance of sucess then multiplats.

@kamizuka I don't understand how you can't allow me to compare two different games. Both Prototype and InFamous are third person titles and are both action based shooters. So I'm confused looking at your response to me. If I was to compare them in any way, it would be to say that Prototype is an over-the-top-dumbed-down-version of InFamous.

As time goes on, it's getting harder and harder to ignore that there are some ps3-only games that I REALLY want to play. Uncharted is definitely near the top of that list.

@ Ladiesman17 Does that mean you hate: Halo Demon's Souls Ratchet and Clank Infamous God of War Gears of War Pixeljunk games Sly Cooper Jak and Daxter Fable Left 4 Dead Metal Gear Solid 4 (IF you hate this, there is something seriously wrong with you.) most of the Dragon Quest series The Legend of Zelda Metroid Super Mario Earthbound??? (This game really needs to be re-enditioned) F-Zero Star Fox Ect. Just because they are all exclusive to their own console? Hm. You are missing out on some of the greatest games I have ever laid my eyes on.

I can't believe Brutal Legend wasn't in the Top Art Direction. MW2 and Uncharted 2 as art? What the hell?

@MERGATROYDER iam sorry but i cant allow you to compare two different games. Infamous is a third person shooter game, yet prototype is an action game. i prefer Infamous though

Uncharted 2 for the win! :)
if they already have high-end sytem, wh they're bothering so much & keep making "exclusives". I'm open-minded person, so give me good answers? allright
@Ladiesman17 Perhaps, because exclusives are made in focus to use the hardware specifically..? While most multiplatform games use only some of the hardware and even that at times bad, leaving some unused due to the other system's different hardware architecture. So you hate Uncharted 2 for it being an exclusive? Well, you're obviously missing out on a good game then.

I felt InFamous was a better game then Prototype. Prototype was literally never spoken about after about 2 months time. I still hear people talking about InFamous and how much they love it. The story is better, the visuals are better, the powers are cooler in my opinion. I do love destroying a city block though in Protoype. InFamous deserves a lot more credit.

angelcar

@ Ice-man28 I agree with Iceman that inFamous got absolutely no love. I liked Prototype, but it had no business in the Action Game category if inFamous wasn't even in it. That said, I sure hope Uncharted two wins most if not all of the categories it's in. Playing that game was like immersing yourself in the best Indiana Jones movie you can think of, and then some. Wowza!

Ice-man28
Ice-man28

inFamous gets absolutely no love at all. It had one of the best stories of any game this year, and definitely deserves to get a nomination over Prototype.

Modern Warfare 2? are you serious? Hopefully not because Uncharted 2 does everything it tried to do and does it 999 times better. Batman was a fun game I wont deny it but Uncharted 2 is just too awesome to put down and not much to say about Assassins Creed, I didn't really enjoy it.

Glad I live in Vegas I'm attending and booing Kotick off the stage!!! The editor for Gamespot needs to be fired and replaced for making the following mistake: "with the awards bring(BEING???) doled out" I'm ESL (english second language) but when I'm reading, mistakes like that really ruin the article.

@ fps_d0minat0r sorry for interupting, but I'm disagree with you, "exclusives" doesn't mean good, It's just corporate strategy, so that their console sales well on the market.. just that simple i think :) if they already have high-end sytem, why they're bothering so much & keep making "exclusives". It's all good. I will say Sony had some decent games last year. I liked them, but I am an avid "Online" gamer. Have a clan and do the gamebattles thing. As anyone will tell you, their is no competition with the online gaming. Not even talking about less lag or better voice chat, more features etc... Just the sheer number of teams. There are less then 1000 MW2 teams on GB for the PS3, while there are 32,0000 teams for the 360 version. Online games last much, much longer on the 360. MW2 averages 2 million online at the same time, COD4 still has 100K, Halo 3 still 500 k to a million, while the PS3 games like KZ2 and R2 have less then 10 k now. I own all the systems, but I like playing online and Sony cant compare. To each their own, but last I checked the 360 had 40 million consoles sold and almost 30 million of those are in the United states, which is where I live. Compared to Sony's less then 10 million install base. I like American games and like competition. Reading all whats due to come out this year, I think it's clearly a Microsoft year. Not like I want Sony to drop out or pull a Sega, I paid $600 for that thing.

@force_user1975 just want to be up front and say that im not a rabid fanboy thats going to argue with everything you say, but people say its sony's year because they really really stepped it up to be more competitive. the lineup of games last year(whether you like them or not) was way better than anything seen on the ps3 yet. (even though i wish people would go back and find folklore) and sony really closed the gap, not completely, but the fighting spirit is back in sony. and since i think that both have good things to offer, i want to see them both continue. i dont want another sega because that was a little heartbreaking. anyway just wanted to say that...i guess haha

I did get a PS3 with UC2 recently. And I gotta say, it blows every game I own on the XBOX out of the water. Yes, even Mass Effect. Nothing wrong with it;it just isn't UC2.

fps_d0minat0r
fps_d0minat0r

@ force_user1975 ps3 has better motion controls mass effect 2 isnt exclusive, they do a good job fooling people with their pre-rendered cut-scenes though fable 3 wont beat demons souls. halo reach is......halo.......an average fps. crackdown 2....lol splinter cell wont beat mgs4. and gears 3 not out till next gen. ps3 lineup: god of war 3, gran turismo 5, (already killed competition?), heavy rain, MAG, modnation racers, FFXIV online, the last guardian, demons souls worldwide, white knight chronicles worldwide. and maybe resistance 3 near fall 2010. LA noire and agent are also likely to be ps3 exclusives. microsoft did a good job sealing tekken 6 and final fantasy otherwise they would already be out. not because their mindblowing games, but because they would have been twice as good if they were exclusive and optimised for ps3.

force_user1975

We all know games like Tetris or puzzle games and games that come packaged with a console are going to do well. What I was talking about is sales of exclusives. The numbers don't lie. Killzone 2 was supposed to be the "Best FPS EVER!" too bad it wasn't, I'm just saying the people that keep insisting it was Sony's year, might want to rethink that. Because Microsoft and Nintendo outsold them. Like I said, I believe Sony released some decent games, too bad nobody bought them. Even games out on the 360 and PS3 sold much, much, much, much better on the 360. MW2 anyone? lol With Natal, Mass Effect 2, Fable 3, Halo Reach, Crackdown 2, Splinter Cell Conviction possible Gears of War 3...I think it's fair to say it's definitely not Sony's year. Just saying, as a person who owns all three consoles.

@ force_user1975 game fails are based on quality, not sales. if you care about sales then youll be dissapointed to know tetris sold 100m, over 10 times more then halo........according to YOUR theory, tetris kills halo. oh but i forgot your not a gamer are you? your a business man.....carry on calculating your sales figures and profits.
