Unannounced Eidos Montreal game cancelled - Report

Cancelled game said to be connected to Square Enix Japan.

Thief and Deus Ex: Human Revolution developer Eidos Montreal is said to have cancelled an unannounced game, according to sources speaking to Kotaku.

The cancelled project is said to be connected to the Japanese arm of Square Enix, and was reported to have been a new IP.

Earlier this week, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII game director Yuji Abe said that the company has discussed Eidos working on a Final Fantasy game. "That's certainly been discussed within the company, the possibility of say, Eidos or maybe someone else to look after or maybe take on the Final Fantasy series," he said.

In 2008, Swedish developer Grin began preproduction work on a Final Fantasy spin-off game called Fortress. The game was cancelled six months into development.

Eidos Montreal's next game, Thief, will be released for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 in February 2014. The Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut was released last week.

An unanounced game gets canceled, right. And this is news why ? I'm sure millions of unanounced ideas and concepts get canceled every day in all walks of life, including gaming, without prompting articles.

Or did Eidos just need some love and see their name in print ?

I have to assume that GS has editors who decide what does and what doesn't go onto the site.

Personally i call this non-news, filler stuff.

Perhaps with a bit more scrutiny on GS' behalf we could be rid of this sort of nonsense.....maybe it would even help with the loading times of this shiny, new fangled GS .

Game concepts rise and die all the time, this is nothing unusual. Since it's a completely new IP, we don't know what to expect. Usually, I'm a bit relieved if a bad game concept gets canned, but still concerned that it might have been made (what were they thinking?). If the game concept is good, then I'm sad it never got a chance. Thus, hearing about canceled game projects is never a good thing.

Did they just announce that they cancelled an unannounced game?

"Hey guys and girls. We had this game in the works, we hadn't announced it yet, so we just wanted to announce now that it was cancelled."

How the hell is this relevant to anyone?

If it was connected to the Japanese arm of Square Enix, it would have probably been trash anyway. Just let Eidos Montreal do their own thing. Square Enix is only good for publishing these days. The best games to have their name on it weren't even developed by them. Tomb Raider, Sleeping Dogs, and Hitman: Absolution. All good games that Square Enix didn't develop, but published. And then had the nerve to say they didn't perform well just because they didn't sell 100 million units a piece. Jealous fools lol

It Wasn't Shootrz, Racrz, Or Quik Timz, so they couldn't allow it to be made.

On another note, Thank You to Captain Clickbait for raising the bar in absolutely irrelevant non-news.

Eidos: So we're thinking of appealing to the Japanese market with a new IP.

Square Enix: You think you know Japanese gaming market? SHAMEFUL DISPRAY!!!

We at Gamespot are confirming an unannounced game that you will never know about was cancelled.

Glad to see GS sets the bar so high when it comes to news.

Well if it was connected to Final Fantasy it's a good thing it was cancelled, not because it's FF but because it would have been an outside developer.......Front Mission Evolved? I could honestly give a fuck if FF fails or succeeds, I was never a fan but I am a fan of Deus Ex and Thief and I'd hate to see Eidos who are good at making those types of games get stuck doing terrible RPG's......NO, keep Eidos doing what they do best, it'll make more money in the long run and worry about fixing your own house so you don't keep fucking up so much......

So, that game we didn't know anything about, we're never actually going to know about now???

How dare you Eidos!!! I demand a boycott on all future Eidos games and a ritual burning of all senior staff outside their offices NOW!!!

GRIN was a developer with a lot of potential who seemed to always miss the mark.  Bionic Commando Rearmed was fine, but it was also a remake.  Bionic Commando '09 was fun, but very linear and the radiation destroyed a lot of the potential.  Wanted was fine, but lacked depth and replayability.  I'm not going to talk about Terminator.

Had that company been just a bit more visionary, and perhaps hired more able people, I'm convinced they would be flourishing today.

I don't think Eidos can do any worse with the Final Fantasy brand than Square have been doing for the last half-a-decade.

Isn't that like saying if a tree falls in the woods does it really make a sound? Or telling your girlfriend you were going to give her that new Galaxy Tab for her birthday but got the socks instead?

Wuh how horrible such a great dev etc etc.

There you go I took care of the unwarranted interest. Eidos Montreal, ha.

A Final Fantasy game born from a partnership between Eidos and Square Enix would have been most Enticing. Imagine an FF game where the story is filled with conspiracies and deep meaning. Hope it happens, as it brings hope to the falling popularity of FF 13.

@MonocleOwl Yeah, I always think these cancelled unknown game stories are a bit weird and unnecessary. I come here to read about games that exist and are in development, not something I've never heard of and which I'll also never hear of, since it got cancelled.

"You know this one game we were working on", "No, what game?" "Ahh, nevermind it's been cancelled". That's how I see these stories.

@MJ12-Conspiracy Just because you don't like those kind of RPG's doesn't mean that a company shouldn't make them or give it a try. I hate FPS games but I don't go around and tell people that certain developers shouldn't make them.

rIVAL_sWORD84

@DanielL5583 @rIVAL_sWORD84 so why does it say cancelled, If they never started then it cant be cancelled

MJ12-Conspiracy
MJ12-Conspiracy

@jZangetsu21  It's not about throwing developers into one slot, it's about working to your strengths....the current Eidos is made up of team members who were at Ion Storm and worked on games like Deus Ex, Deus Ex Invisible War and the Thief series so they are kinda experts at that type of game, Deus Ex isn't a purpose built RPG, it borrows many elements from RPG's and has you play from a first person perspective so it's something in between a shooter and RPG....

Square typically makes RPG's and just RPG's but they've made other games, Einhander was a side scrolling shooter and a damn fine one I might add, The Bouncer was a brawler and a really good one IMO, then there's Front Mission one of the best turn based strategy games and what did Square do this gen? OH yes they handed it over to a western developer who turned it into an Armored Core clone and the game failed.....why? oh, gee IDK because it was the wrong developer? no, because they didn't trust their IP or their customers and had an outside developer make a shit game? YES!!!!!! ding ding

sorry but in some cases I think developers need to stick with what they know, this is how mistrust is created...why do you think some dev's get bad rep? because they cash in on crap franchises and pump out bad games in hopes of getting a fat paycheck but in the end both a developer's rep and a game franchise is destroyed......sound like good business now?

@ExtremeBanana Glitch in the matrix? did you see 2 black cats walk past or have the feeling of deja vu? if so, it means they fixed something in the matrix......

@MJ12-Conspiracy @jZangetsu21 I see what you're getting at. Very good argument indeed and I appreciate that you didn't flame. Wish there were more people like you on forums.

A valid argument with excellent points.

You're right and I agree with you, although I do think Eidos would be able to make a good RPG but yeah, they should probably stick to what they know ^^
