Ultima Forever out now for iOS

Top-down action RPG to take place 21 years after the event of Ultima IV.

EA announced that the next installment of the Ultima series will be out worldwide right now.

This Ultima game may remind fans of the Runes of Virtue Game Boy titles.

The top-down free-to-play action RPG is on sale on iTunes for the iPhone, iPad and iPod. The new title takes place 21 years after the events of Ultima IV, where players control new heroes to help get rid of the Black Weep. The game features four-player co-op multiplayer.

Ultima creator Richard Garriott is currently working on an RPG called Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues that is scheduled for an October 2014 release. The Kickstarter campaign page closed on April 7 at $1,919,275 from 22,322 backers.

Ultima Forever, meh....I just thought that Richard Garriott returning to Ultima after he publicly said he ran it into the ground deliberately just sounds like the worst kind of hypocrisy.  Thanks to him selling Origin to EA, we'll never see any of the other Origin Systems games again either (for the obvious reason).  "Thou hast lost an eighth" just doesn't cover it.  Go back into space Garriott, you left your marbles there.  Moron.

Poor Ultima, from industry changing RPG to iOS title thats barely worth 150 words.

Being in Canada, we got this early... Ultima for IOS simply blew chunks, in my opinion. At least, the version we've experienced. Perhaps they've changed their pay-to-play model since then. As much as I wanted to love it, as a reimagining of Ultima, it falls apart very quickly as being just an unnecessary in-game cash-grab for EA. Shameful...

I was 12 years old at the time Ultima IV was originally released. I still have the metal Ankh that came with the package. I was a die hard fan. From Ultima 1 to 5...

Ultima IV was the first time I'd ever taken full advantage of "playing sick" to my parents in order to miss school, only so I could play it on my Atari 130XE computer. Tons of non-stop playing - although I never actually finished the game. I loved every single second of that game - and I didn't even mind waiting the eternity between going from the world view and a town... Not to mention all of the 5.25" disk swaps that needed to happen.

RPGs seemed to be so much more engrossing back then. A lot more was left to the player's imagination than to how glitzy my graphics card is these days.

@grove12345 yes, Yes, YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When will this point EVER be understood?!?! Thanks for raising this fact which should be as easy to understand as the need to breath yet so many gamers fall prey to financing the whoring of once great IP's.

@snova9308 Yes, Garriott is a narcissist and his days of making worthwhile games are at an end. BUT. No, he had nothing to do with this abomination - it was all EA and one of their lesser developer teams..

@nait2k4 Indeed.  True Ultima, will only live on in our memories and nostalgia game libraries.

@Ultraviolence It's a damn shame. My friends and I had been core fans since Akalabeth. The first two years of Ultima Online was the last hurrah, and then the series simply, for lack of a better word, died.

At least I'll get to meet Lord British again at Unite 2013 in Vancouver (met him several times before in trade shows), and we shall have a nice long chat about Shroud of the Avatar:)

@blackothh yeah EA did. They thought it was about time to cash in on nostalgia and a once respected series.
