UK, Japanese sales slide in 2011

British market posts $3.9 billion in total retail revenues, while Japan led by 3DS, Mario to $5.9 billion gross.

The NPD Group has yet to release its annual US retail sales report for the game industry, but all indications from the firm's monthly reports point to another down year. As with the US, so too with the UK and Japan, as the regions' respective retail stat-tracking firms have announced steep sales declines for 2011.

Mario cleaned up in Japan.

In a report released by the Association for United Kingdom Interactive Entertainment, total retail sales for all entertainment software, non-PC hardware, and gaming accessories declined 13 percent year-over-year to £2.52 billion ($3.9 billion).

Retail sales for console, PC, and handheld software came in at £1.42 billion ($2.19 billion), which represents a 7 percent year-over-year slide. British consumers spent an additional £646 million ($1 billion) on console and handheld hardware, with the Xbox 360 and Nintendo 3DS propelling growth. Accessory sales amounted to £453 million ($702 million) in 2011.

Notably, the UK retail industry experienced a particularly strong October-December quarter, with fully 51 percent of annual revenue generated during the period. Eight of the top 10 selling games were released during this period, with Activision Blizzard's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 leading sales.

In Japan, the story was much the same, though not quite so severe. Andriasang reports today that Famitsu publisher Enterbrain has released its 2011 analysis of the Japanese game market, one that reflects an 8 percent year-over-year drop in total revenues. (Enterbrain's report did not include accessory and PC software sales.)

Non-PC hardware and software combined to generate sales of ¥454 billion ($5.89 billion). Hardware actually grew marginally during the year, rising 2.4 percent to ¥179 billion ($2.33 billion), while software slipped 13.7 percent to ¥274 billion ($3.56 billion).

Belying its rocky launch, the 3DS topped the Japanese hardware charts, thanks in no small part to Nintendo's drastic 33 percent price cut for the system in August. The system matched its US performance, selling 4,135,739 units, according to Enterbrain. Sony's PSP sold 1,960,177 units, just ahead of the PlayStation 3's 1,467,261 units.

The Wii and DS family of hardware followed, with a respective 937,451 units and 711,204 units sold. The PlayStation Vita shifted 402,794 during its short time on the market, while the Xbox 360 moved just 114,075 units.

Japanese gamers' tastes were clearly evident in the software sales chart. Nintendo's Mario franchise secured the top two slots with Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land. Capcom's Monster Hunter franchise proved to be the second most popular, with Monster Hunter Portable 3rd and Monster Hunter 3G slipping into third and fourth. Those games were followed by a double dose of Final Fantasy.

Oh yeah I bet the 3G AT&T plan is really going to help sell the PS Vita. Guess what mobile phones use 4G now. Keep the hope alive PS Vita owners Sony is going to need it when Nintendo releases the dual analog 3DS.

@garland51 You do realise Sony makes much much more than just the Playstation consoles right? I appreciate your views, but they dropped the price because the units became cheaper to produce and had been out for increasingly longer periods. I doubt it has much to do with the success of the PS1 and PS2. Truth is Sony's consoles had a lot more to offer last year than Microsoft's. That's the reason for the sales boost.

damn so the ps3 almost sold in 2011 what the 360 sold in its life time, but a million and half 360 in japan is a job well done for ms a foreign american company in japan

That is crazy how mario kart 7 was released in the last few weeks of december and it is the top selling game in japan. Here I know it will probably be the top 3ds game.

PS3 isn't really successful until it's in 1st place. Plus if everyone truly loved PS3's exclusives, many people would be buying PS3's right now & the PS3's userbase would've been more like PS2's.

Soothsayer42
Soothsayer42

@garland51 the only reason??? what the heck are you talking about. PS3 offers the best game titles. and their free online service. You sir are blind, PS3 is far more successful than the previous and current console. its just the sales that is the difference.

Shinobi120
Shinobi120

@Soothsayer42: The reason why PS3 have easily caught up to 360 in sales was because of the big success off of PS2 & that they have constantly done tons of price drops since launch just to get more people to buy a PS3 (which they got away with only because they had profits from both PS1 & PS2 to help back them up on losses). Now, their profits are gone, & I highly doubt that they could do the same for either Vita or PS4, especially that the PS3 isn't as successful as the PS1 or PS2.

Soothsayer42

@garland51 The Japanese doesn't 'hate' the 360. They just prefer the PS3 cause most of their games (JRPG's) is on PS3. The PS3 leads in Asia,Europe while the 360 still leading by a huge scale in Northern America. Considering the fact that the PS3 is catching up very fast with just a difference in North America, and just a 4 million in difference. Compare it to 2008-2009 where 360 leads in dual digits. If you check Vgcharts.com, you'll see that PS3 leads every Week in global sales.

@DCUItrapro PS3 dominates in Asia, a close competition in Europe(where PS3 still leads) and 360 leads in Northern America.

@megakick that doesn't necessary mean 3DS outsold PSV, remember this is 2011 chart. Vita was released in mid-december whereas 3DS released in march, and to be honest Vita may actually do pretty well in long term. Don't be fooled by the figures, you gonna digest the information first.

@ PSR8000 360 was never going to out sell ps3 in Japan mate, but its been outselling it in other regions for the past 2/3 years or so if I am right, sadly Microsoft is very poorly received over in Japan for some strange reason

@zeemonster66 I think it's because whilst a small part of the EU, the UK is still the biggest European market for video games.

Shame about the 360 being bottom. I thought they'd outsold the PS3 in previous years. I'm happy nintendo are at the top though. With the news and stuff saying it wasn't doing to well over here, made me worry that things were going down hill for nintendo again. Thankfully not though :)

Mario Kart 7's performance is very impressive. The idea that it became the most sold game in Japan in 2011 and it only had one month to do it gives much credit to it. Kudos Nintendo.

Wii Party still selling? I know people like the extra controller, But you would think Wii Play Motion would be in the 10th place spot in Japan. Extra controller with a pack in game does sell still after all this time?

@Soothsayer42 & @zzamaro: Who's honestly surprised by this, really? Japan hated the Xbox in general ever since last generation.

A decline of 10% doesn't really mean much. The video game market is still huge.

@Overminer sure nintendo decreased support for the ds ... but still its somewhat weird .... i mean after a year of the original DS the GBA had strong legs in 2005 its just wierd :S

3DS > PSP > DS > VITA. That how i see it. I just see no reason at all to buy a Vita. when im still currently playing and buying games for my psp. Which i think is still better than the DS. The 3DS Though im deffently gonna buy. I only ever have one handeld per generation and im gonna get the 3DS. just waiting for a duel angalog version though.

Heh, not bad games, FFXIII-2, FFT-0, ToX, MK7, SM3DL, and both MH are pretty good games from what I have been playing from them. But the sales numbers just don't seem right.

@FatmanAB good news for sony, yes, but Nintendo's decreased support of the ds to push the 3ds make this no surprise

Final Fantasy XIII-2 sales are quite disappointing as the previous game sold at least 1.9 million in Japan two years back. Monster Hunter 3G will eventually join Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land among the 3DS "platinum" club by selling at least one million copies, and perhaps out-sell the original Wii version. Low Vita sales due in part to a lack of "must-buy" software for the Japanese market.
