UK Chart: Minecraft stays top as Pikmin 3 falls out of Top 10

The retail release of Minecraft: Xbox 360 takes a second week at the top of the UK charts.

The retail release of Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition has blocked all competition from the top of the UK charts for a second week running.

Pikmin 3, which finished last week in second, dropped sharply out of the top 10 to 15th. The Last of Us climbed to second, followed by Animal Crossing: New Leaf in third.

FIFA 13, now in its forty-fifth week in the charts, finished in fourth place.

Movie tie-in The Smurfs 2 climbed twenty places to finish fifth, a 115 percent increase in week-on-week sales buoyed by the release of the accompanying film.

The rest of the top 10 was filled by all the usual suspects: Far Cry 3 in sixth, LEGO Batman 2 seventh, Call of Duty: Black Ops II in eighth, Tomb Raider ninth, and Assassin's Creed III tenth.

The only new entry in the charts this week was the budget re-release of Saints Row: The Third - The Full Package in 29th. Its successor, Saints Row IV, is due out at the end of August.

The Top 20 UK chart for the week ending August 3:

1. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition

Doesn't matter...GTA V will be #1 in EVERY country for sure

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Legendary Edition drops 11 places since last week, that steep. There's still some love for the two GTA games, though.

Battlefield 3 has gone up 2 places since last week and CoD has gone up 8 places. As the sequels get closer to release we'll see if there are more changes.

I wonder how the game The Smurfs 2 will hold up later on. The movie did much worse on opening weekend in the US than the first one, but it's very popular outside the US.

WOW! TR is still there in Top 10? That is really amazing!

Well it's the UK....Sadly, the UK have been getting screwed by gaming companies since the beginning, especially by Nintendo.  PS3 and 360 have at least showed some love but no one showed more love to the UK than Sega.  I can see why 360 or PS3 games would come out on top over there. Meanwhile in the US, Pikmin 3 copies were literally gone in less than 30 mins of store opening on Sunday morning according to the employees at my local gamestop

With that kind of drop, it may be out of the chart altogether next week.

Ouch. And Pikmin 3 was tipped to mark the beginning of the Wii U rescue plan. Piped by a years old game that started of indie.

And there is probably about 500 people in the UK with a WiiU

That doesn't surprise me. The WiiU has insignificant installed base, all the WiiU owners probably already got the game since there is nothing to play in the console.

didnt i told you that the big games for wii u would save the console??

I wish I could get into Minecraft - it seems really popular - but it's just not my type of game. My attention span's probably too short.

Nice to see both The Last of Us and Animal Crossing still in the top ten charts

It would have helped if they noted which system each game respectively were sold from: multi-platform, individual, or otherwise. I know the gamer-geek in most would know, but the casual gamer in myself doesn't know, so I'm just curious as to what each system is ranking highest in most games on the list sold vs. least on that top 20 (although I might take a stab & say Wii-U has the least).

This just goes to show you how many WiiU's are out there. All the hardcore went out and bought Pikmin 3 in its first week and now it will disappear from the charts. Sad but true.

If Pikmin 3 is doing this badly, who knows how big of a bomb Wonderful 101 will be? Kinda sad but also kinda likely.

I almost feel sorry for the bigger developers getting topped by Minecraft :D

It's so cute to see Sony fans butthurt because ''The last of us'' is not on the #1 spot anymore.

Not surprising, pikmin is a kiddie game that makes you use a Wii mote.

@PosiTVEMinD355 at my local gamestop i picked it the second to last copy of pikmin 3. I think the game will give a slight increase to Wii u sales and get people  to at least think about a future purchase.

@bksonic123 Well, you can always revel in being "alternative" then :P. Wanting to enjoy a game just because it's popular is the wrong reason to play a game, I think. Having your own opinion (whether mainstream or not) is underrated.

@benleslie5 For real!  I knew The last of Us would be in there but Animal Crossing in #3!?  That blew my mind

@Cl0ud Have you even tried The Last of Us?  Its actually pretty good.  Cant compare it to Minecraft since they're two completely different games

@PeterMiller Who cares about if the game is mainstream or not. If the game is good, it deserve the hours put in to it. End of story.

@PeterMiller Yeah. Who cares if it is good or not. If other people like it, hate it, because you're special.

@dribblesbarbax So people just not liking Pikmin 3 is out of the question? One game's sales determines how many people own the console it's on?

Logic... gone.

PosiTVEMinD355
PosiTVEMinD355

@Fallout_red You do know this is for the UK right?  We have no idea how it's going to be for the US and in Japan it's selling really well

Hurvl

@gosushi But The Last of Us moved up from no.3 last week, to no. 2 this week, so Sony is probably pleased.

gamespotgunners

@demondogx Why would ANYONE care?

Last Of Us was at number 1 for 7 weeks in a row and has been incredibly successful and more to the point is still number 1 game in Europe as of right now, a much bigger market, its narrow minded to believe anyone would care that another interesting game is at number 1 in the UK chart particularly when the 360 is the best selling console in the UK of this gen, it is the biggest addressable market.

It will likely be all change with the release of Saints Row IV, Rayman Legends, and going into September GTAV. We will see a very different chart as of right now the chart has been stagnant almost entirely throughout July and now into the start of August because the only new game of note (Apart from Minecraft) since the start of July has been Pikmin 3 which has the lowest addressable audience and so has stumbled down into 15.

@demondogx troll score 0 out of 10 main reason being why would any sony fan be buthurt this long after release?

PosiTVEMinD355
PosiTVEMinD355

@nathanjones007 @PosiTVEMinD355 It really is a fun system if people would give it a chance. I'm a family guy and I enjoy my games either by myself or playing together with my friends or brothers, cousins, nieces and nephews and the only console that gives me local 4 (now 5) player fun is Nintendo.  I hope it does well, there's a lot of potential in it despite being an underpowered machine. Pikmin 3 looks incredible and i'm curious as to that secret code that is scattered in the game. I've read somewhere that Miyamoto said it's a surprise that will be revealed later so I guess we'll have to wait and see

dribblesbarbax
dribblesbarbax

@aovannor Also if the game sold 10 million copies you could say there are at least 10 million WiiU's out there. Logic.

dribblesbarbax
dribblesbarbax

@aovannor Well considering Pikmin 3 is considered to be Nintendo's big hope this year and it falls out of the charts in a week really sums up how poorly the console is doing.

b74kd3th
b74kd3th

Reviews said you pretty much need to play with the wiimote which Sux.

dribblesbarbax
dribblesbarbax

@aovannor Thats why I said "at least" meaning theres a possibility of more. Also castle crashers wasnt Sonys big hope for sales was it. Put Gran Turismo in your theory and you can say there at least 10 million PS3 consoles. At least. So there are more.

aovannor
aovannor

@dribblesbarbax @aovannor ok so.. castle crashers on PS3.. maybe I'll use that to figure out how many people have a PS3.

That sold 181,000 units by the end of 2010. So.. it's safe to say that in Dec 2010 there were at least 181,000 PS3 owners. Does that sound like an accurate amount of PS3 owners to you? Or is it sooo far off that it shows everything you said was, in fact, not logical at all?

ryanPwnZzDoA
ryanPwnZzDoA

@dribblesbarbax @aovannor Nintendo's big hope is the holiday line up. Pikmin 3 did help move consoles but they knew it was'nt gonna be big

dribblesbarbax
dribblesbarbax

@aovannor I see your argument and its a valid one. But there are people out there who are still not convinced by the longevity of the WiiU. I'd buy Pikmin 3 in a heart beat if I had a WiiU. I dont so no Pikmin 3 sale for Nintendo. I'd imagine thats the case for a lot of people. If Pikmin 3 came out on either Xbox or Playstation it would have had a better chance at selling more because of a larger install base. Logic.

aovannor
aovannor

@dribblesbarbax @aovannor hmm again.. no, it doesn't. It determines how badly the game is doing.

I know the console is doing badly, I'm not making out it isn't. You're just saying crap though to try and salt the wound.
