UK Chart: Minecraft blocks Pikmin 3 from No. 1

Nintendo's Pikmin 3 debuts in second place in the UK charts, behind a resurgent Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition.

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition has denied the Wii U its first taste of the top of the UK charts, with a 74 per cent jump in sales securing it the lead over Pikmin 3.

Nintendo's GameCube predecessor, Pikmin 2, debuted at 32 in the UK chart back in 2004.

Another new release on the Wii U, the disc-based edition of New Super Luigi U, debuted in the chart at 13. The game had previously been made available digitally on the Wii U eShop.

The Last of Us slips to third, ending its unbroken six-week run at the top of the charts.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Mario and Luigi: Dream Team Bros are in fourth and fifth, with FIFA 13 in sixth.

Far Cry 3 is seventh, Skyrim eighth, and Tomb Raider ninth. Lego Batman 2 rounds out the top 10.

The top 20 UK chart for the week ending July 27:

1. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition
2. Pikmin 3

I have never understood the appeal of Minecraft. Sure I like sandbox games, but I want there to be a point, other than 'Here is a world, now go build stuff'. I would get bored after a week. yet I can play sandbox games like Skyrim or Saints Row for much longer.

Not bad if you consider the user base for each console I suppose...

Minecraft, I understand the appeal of the game but if I were to spend time building things I would prefer to buy legos or mega blocks and be able to actually touch the things I'm building.

Still don't understand why so many people want to play vanilla Minecraft on a console that can hardly support more then 3 people inside a world. The game is infinitely better on PC, and it isn't like you need a fancy computer to play it there.

Thanks.

Kind of knew Pikmin 3 would be on the sales chart this week

That's really not bad, I remember it took long for PS3 titles to get on the list when Xbox 360 was released a year early. Same could be said for how hard it was for the original Xbox to get on the list when the PS2 was released early.

So Pikmin surpassed the Last Of Us, but is behind Minecraft? This doesn't make any sense, why does Minecraft sell so much still? .-.

Only bad news for people who don't like Nintendo, good news to everyone else. Debuting at #2 isn't bad considering the Wii U install base in the UK. Good job Nintendo.

I thought that Minecraft on the XBOX was gimped in comparison to the PC version.  I'm surprised that it continues to sell so well.  For a downloadable title, it ain't cheap.

Full disclosure, I do not play Minecraft.

i would understand pikmin 3 to be in 2. place if the first place was the last of us, but minecraft xbox360 edition? now that's just weird...

The fact that good old Minecraft outsells a brand new anticipated Wii U game, says something about the state of the Wii U.

I'm buying Pikmin 3 when it hits the US though.

Good Job Nintendo 3 out of 5 games in top 5. Wii U will slowly win more people over.

Pikmin 3 has been out for a few days and it claimed the number 2 slot? I am a bit surprised the 360's Minecraft held the top slot but it did have an entire month to do so.

@gralvader I agree, however, Minecraft is a lot cheaper than Legos. Minecraft is only $20 I believe, and you have practically an unlimited amount of blocks for up to four people at once. Legos on the other hand are comparatively very expensive, and you run the risk of stepping on them barefoot. lol

@gralvader Yeah, I was minecrafting 20 years ago with legos, building transformers, voltrons, bond's cars and other daimos.

Now it's more kewl to do it on PC or whatever. Kids don't like going outside these days with facebooks and things.

@ADO300 As a Swedish guy, I kind of like that particular version of "weird", haha. No one can stop the Juggernaut (which is Minecraft).

Ahead of the release of GTA V, people have caught up with other GTA titles. Also, both BF and CoD is on the list, with both seeing sequels released soon.

@Dezuria No. 2 isn't bad at all, considering that Pikmin isn't part of Nintendo's trifecta, and is on a console with such a small userbase. Smashing success? No. Flop? Doesn't look that way.

@Dezuria It also surpassed the Lats of Us, so I guess that just say how good the PS3 is

19James89
19James89

@Dezuria There's millions more 360's in the UK than Wii U's, so what do you expect? It's also only been on sale for three days, so it's not even had an entire week on the market.

If Pikmin 3 has generated such impressive sales that it has come into #2 on the UK charts then I fathom to think where Nintendo's more anticipated first party titles will slot in.

19James89
19James89

@servb0ts Of course it will, the Wii U is a brilliant console and will have a lot of brilliant games on it this time next year.

19James89
19James89

@Mugzippit Don't forget the Wii U is not very popular in the UK, so Pikmin has done well to slot in at number two and there's nothing to suggest it won't slot in at #1 when next weeks sales figures are released.

19James89
19James89

@brainiac1988 Nintendo doesn't seem to be taken seriously by Gamespot who seems fixated with the PS4 and the Xbox hardware talk.

@hadlee73 @Helios_Sun You just made me realise Lego could have made so much money if they were better game makes lol.(after their "Minecraft" addiction there would be the physical sets still.)

@19James89 @servb0ts I just want to finish Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story and Pikmin 2 before I get a WiiU.  Hopefully by then there will be a price drop.

However, if a new iteration of Zelda comes out before I complete the above, that will be the proverbial straw.  I just can't put in more than 3 hours a week of gaming anymore.

Slim_Lyrics

@19James89 @brainiac1988 Or maybe just like most other major American gaming sites (Gametrailers, Kotaku, polygon, etc) they are waiting until the game gets closer to it's US release date so they can avoid Nintendo's draconian embargo demands.

Mkeegs79
Mkeegs79

@19James89 @Slim_Lyrics How so? Go look around. There is nothing new to report on the Wii U, oh except that a major store isn't carrying them anymore. They posted that. There isn't much to report and Nintendo has been very tight on releasing info on new products. Besides, right now Sony and Microsoft continue to have things to talk about.

As for reviews, people whine that they get posted early thinking they are done quickly with the score as an afterthought but when they release late, people are going to whine still? The game isn't even out yet. I am sure Nintendo has embargoed its review.

Slim_Lyrics
Slim_Lyrics

@19James89 @Slim_Lyrics This is a multi national site (Actually I believe Gamespot has a UK specific website) but the main crew is in the US. The reason why IGN's review got out early was because it was done by the UK crew.

No one is saying that the US is the world (however it does represent the largest percentage of the video game market per country). They likely just chose to wait until the US release period to release their review.

Also, as i pointed out earlier, there is likely still a review embargo by Nintendo on the US specific version which isn't coming out for i think another week..

19James89
19James89

@Slim_Lyrics This is a multi-national website is not? I am currently logged in on the UK version, so why should the rest of world have to wait for the US? The US is not the World.

@19James89 @Slim_Lyrics I don't see where you're coming from.

GS posts just as much relevant Nintendo/SiiU related articles as everyone else. Just like any other site they put most of their focus on the current hot topics, which unfortunately for Nintendo has been Microsoft and Sony's little tug of war with their consoles. When some news worthy from Nintendo comes forward, GS doesn't hesitate to post it.

Hell i even remember a short while back when Nintendo had their last shareholders meeting the site being full of Nintendo related news. Hell, There's even one on the site right now,

19James89
19James89

@Slim_Lyrics There's been plenty of Wii U news posted on Wii U daily that hasn't been posted on this site. This website is obsessed with Sony and Microsoft and will post virtually nothing about Nintendo.

Gamespot seems to be enjoying playing Sony off against Microsoft as the release dates for both consoles draws ever nearer.
